Get a free iOS app every day from AppGratis

There are countless ways to find free apps for your iPhone, iPod, or iPad. You can peruse the App Store. You can subscribe to a Twitter feed like 148Apps Now Free. Heck, you can even use an app; I continue to be a fan of Appsfire Deals, which serves up a huge helping of freebies every day, right on your iDevice.

But here's the thing. Sometimes you don't want a seemingly endless list of unknown apps to wade through. You want a personal recommendation, like from a friend who says, "Hey, I found a great freebie today, … Read more

What to expect for the iPhone 5

Tuesday's tech news roundup has a case of iPhone anticipation jitters:

Can you stand the wait? It's almost time for a new iPhone. Apple will dish all the details Wednesday, but here's what we're expecting: larger screen, smaller dock connector, and 4G LTE speeds. It's questionable if Apple will even mention the rumored 7-inch iPad Mini. That announcement may be saved for next month to give iPhone all the glory.

Use your voice to take pictures with the Samsung Galaxy S III

Some Android smartphones have a dedicated camera shutter button, or at least a button combination that takes a photo. Usually, it's on the top of edge of the phone, and it works well when you're trying to hang onto the phone and snap a shot at the same time. If your only camera button is onscreen, as in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S III (S3), you can actually tell the camera when to take a photo instead of tapping the button.

To do this you'll need to enable voice commands for apps, which can be … Read more

Always take advantage of free iOS app promotions; here's why

Every Thursday Apple reveals a new free app of the week. Some apps are likely to be used a lot, such as last week's free app, 360 Panorama. Other apps, like this week's Kayak Pro, may not sound like something you're going to use today, or even in the near future, but you should download it anyway. Why? As pointed out on Reddit, and then by The Next Web -- because it's free.

If you're not going to use the app right away, delete it from your iOS device. There's no point in letting … Read more

Get alerted when the free App of the Week is posted in the App Store

A few weeks ago Apple started offering an app in the iOS App Store as a free App of the Week. The initial app was Cut the Rope: Experiments HD, followed by Snapseed, and this week it's Monsters Ate My Condo.

All three have been great apps, with plenty more sure to come. Missing out on a chance to grab an app for free can be frustrating, and remembering to check the App Store each week isn't always going to happen. Instead of trying to remember, or setting a weekly reminder, let an IfThisThenThat (Ifttt) task alert you … Read more

The ultimate iPhone app for finding free iPhone apps

Psst! Don't look now, but the mega-popular AirMusic app -- which streams your iDevice's music library to other devices -- is free for today. It regularly sells for $2.99.

Update: My apologies! AirMusic was free yesterday (Sunday), which is when I wrote this post. Unfortunately, it didn't go live until today, and the app is now back up to $2.99. But you can use Appsfire Deals to notify you if/when it becomes free again!

How do I know? No thanks to iTunes; although it lists the "top free apps" for various categories, … Read more

Mobile app revenue set to soar to $46 billion in 2016

Mobile app revenue was huge last year, but that'll be nothing compared to where it's expected to go by 2016.

In 2016, total global mobile application revenue will reach an estimated $46 billion, according to ABI Research. That figure, the research firm says, includes pay-per-download, in-app purchases, subscriptions, and advertising. Last year, mobile app revenue hit $8.5 billion, ABI research says.

This year, in-app purchases will likely outpace pay-per-download revenue, but according to ABI Research, the number of people buying content in apps won't grow all that much, potentially putting that revenue opportunity's future in … Read more

HP update to boost TouchPad 'functionality'

Hewlett-Packard told CNET on Monday that it will deliver a future update to boost the TouchPad's functionality. HP also said it has seen "huge spikes" in TouchPad activation in the wake of the decision to discount the tablet.

On August 19, HP slashed the price of the 16GB TouchPad to $100, setting off a buying frenzy at stores like Best Buy and online. HP's action came after announcing the shuttering its WebOS device business. The TouchPad uses the WebOS operating system.

"We expect that HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that … Read more
