Use your Apple TV to view movie showtimes in nearby theaters

Using your Apple TV you can now watch a trailer for a movie, then view its showtimes and theaters in which the movie is playing.

Being able to watch a movie trailer while deciding which movie to go watch the same night, or in anticipation of a new release isn't a new feature on Apple TV. You open the Trailers app, select the trailer you want to watch, and it's streaming in just a few minutes on your HDTV. Up until now, though, you couldn't view local showtimes if you found a movie you wanted to go watch. Thankfully, showtimes have been added to the Apple TV with software update 5.1; and it's very easy to access.

As you can see in the image above, when you first open the Trailers app on your Apple TV, you'll see a new Showtimes option along the top of the screen. Select it to begin looking for movie showtimes.

The first time you visit the Showtimes section, you'll be asked to enter your ZIP code. This will allow the Apple TV to give you showtimes for surrounding theaters.

After you've entered your location, you'll see a list of local movie theaters on the left side of the screen. As you highlight a theater, the movies on the right will change to show you what's currently playing in that particular theater. To view the showtimes, select a movie from the right side of the screen. You'll then have the option to view the showtimes for the current day, or a specific day along with the various local theaters in which the movie is currently playing.

Perhaps you're not thinking about going to a movie, but you find that a trailer catches your eye and going to see it is now a must. When reading about the movie, you'll now see a Showtime button that will take you directly to showtimes for the closest theater it's available in.

Next, Apple needs to add the ability to purchase movie tickets directly on your TV and have them delivered to Passbook on your iOS device.
