Rumor Has It: Google's secret plan -- a $99 tablet?

Next week, Google is expected to unveil an update to the Nexus 7, an LG Nexus phone, a high-end new tablet, and Android Jelly Bean, but there's a rumor going around that Google has another trick up its sleeve.

What if we told you it was going to make a decidedly "low-end" Nexus tablet for $100 less than the Nexus 7 -- meaning $230 cheaper than the iPad Mini? You'd get your credit card out, right? Or scrounge around for enough change in your couch cushions?

Well, watch the show to see why you might want … Read more

Samsung, LG to launch 1080p phones next year, report says

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are looking to step up their game when it comes to display quality for their smartphones.

Both Korean conglomerates are planning to added full 1080p high-resolution capabilities to their smartphone screens in the first half of next year, according to Korean news Web site MK News.

Both companies are expected to pack in more than 400 pixels per inch for future displays. That would be higher than the 326 pixels per inch in the iPhone 5's Retina Display. A full HD display is supposed to have 440 pixels per inch.

The report noted that … Read more

1080i and 1080p are the same resolution

There still seems to be some confusion about the difference between 1080i and 1080p. Both are 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution. Both have 2,073,600 pixels. From one perspective, 1080i is actually greater than Blu-ray. And, you can't even get a full 1080p/60 source other than a PC, camcorder, or some still cameras that shoot video.

True, 1080i and 1080p aren't the same thing, but they are the same resolution. Let the argument commence... … Read more

Oppo reportedly readying world's first 1080p smartphone

Oppo, a company better known for its high-end Blu-ray players, is quietly preparing to lay claim to another smartphone title.

Earlier this year, the Chinese company released the Oppo Finder, which at just 6.65mm thick edged out the competition to claim the title of the world's thinnest smartphone. Now the company appears ready to take the screen-resolution crown as well.

The Oppo Find 5 will sport a 5-inch 1080p screen that features a whopping 441 pixels per inch (ppi), Oppo Mobile CEO Chen Mingyong said in a blog detailed by Chinese tech site CNMO.com -- handily beating … Read more

Why a longer iPhone 5 screen needs to happen

For months, we've heard talk of an iPhone 5 with a longer screen. The latest stories around the Internet suggest not only that this is a likely reality, but that iOS 6 supports this new resolution: 640x1,136 pixels, to be exact. That's an extra 176 pixels longer than the current iPhone's 640x960 display.

When I heard of the next iPhone's longer screen, I thought: I'd just prefer a slightly bigger screen, not necessarily a longer one. My current iPhone 4S feels like it has a perfect aspect ratio. Why change it?

Then I thought about it, and quickly changed my tune.… Read more

Logitech C920 first Webcam with 1080p video calling

Past Webcams, Logitech's C910 for example, have offered 1080p video recording, but the new Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 is the first to let you make video calls at full HD resolution.

Logitech cites a partnership with Skype as the enabling factor for the C920's 1080p video calling, and you need to use Skype 5.7 Beta for Windows for full quality transmissions.

Standard video recording on the C920 is similar to that of the previous models, with compression coming by way of the H.264 standard. Logitech says the camera can also capture digital still images of … Read more

Get an Epson Home Cinema 6100 1080p projector for $699

Today's deal is a little weird. Awesome, but weird.

Fry's has the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 6100 1080p projector for $699, plus $10.44 for shipping. It's new, not refurbished, making this the best deal I can recall seeing for a 1080p projector.

What's the weird part? The Fry's site says it's "available for preorder," so there's no way to know when you'll actually get it. Hmmm.

Update: It now shows in stock!

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained cheaply, right? Having just reviewed a similar projector priced at $1,500, … Read more
