When Zynga has a hot game, it knows exactly what to do: Make more versions of it.

The social-gaming company just announced the launch of Bubble Safari Ocean and Bubble Safari for mobile, two new arcade-style games based on Zynga's popular Facebook game Bubble Safari.

Bubble Safari Ocean is already live on Facebook, and Bubble Safari mobile is expected to be available in the Apple App Store later today.

"There's something oddly satisfying about popping bubbles," VP of Zynga games Tom Casey wrote in a blog post. "Maybe it's the sense of power and … Read more

The 6 most disappointing games and trends of 2012

Each year we're treated to 12 months worth of games all competing for your hard earned cash. Some are must-buys, some are just average, but only a select few can be labeled the year's most truly disappointing.

This year I'll take a look at the games and trends that induced the most head-scratching and face-palming reactions from an entire calendar year. Brace yourselves. It gets ugly here on out.

Feeling nostalgic? Here's what stunk in 2011.

Behind the scenes with the world's greatest 'Star Wars' collection

Behind the scenes with the world's greatest 'Star Wars' collection

PETALUMA, Calif.--Driving along the back roads of this idyllic, easy-going Northern California town, you'd never know that behind the walls of one of the most unassuming buildings around is perhaps the best collection of geek memorabilia in the world.

Welcome to Rancho Obi-Wan, Steve Sansweet's homage to his life's passion -- "Star Wars," a non-profit museum dedicated to serving "the public through the collection, conservation, exhibition and interpretation of [the films'] memorabilia and artifacts." Formerly Lucasfilm's head of fan relations and a Los Angeles-based reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Sansweet … Read more

Hide the pigs, Angry Birds movie is really happening

Rumors of an Angry Birds movie have been flying about like Red Birds in the digital sky. Now we finally have some more concrete details on the film, which is expected to come out in the middle of 2016.

No surprise, the film will be a 3D CG-animated production. There goes my dream of seeing Robert DeNiro playing a live-action Mighty Eagle with Lily Tomlin as Pink Bird.… Read more

Yoda head: Original 'Star Wars' items up for auction

Yoda head: Original 'Star Wars' items up for auction

You can collect action figures. You can make a Millennium Falcon out of gingerbread. You can dress up like Princess Leia. Those are all good things, but perhaps the ultimate expression of "Star Wars" devotion is to own a piece of the original movies.

You can't just pop down to the store and pick up a screen-used X-Wing Fighter miniature, but if you have the cash handy, you can get one from an upcoming Profiles in History auction. The X-Wing model from "Star Wars: Episode IV" is just one of several rare items up for sale starting on December 15 as part of the "Drama, Action, Romance: The Hollywood Auction 53."… Read more

Unofficial 'Firefly' Serenity Lego kit goes on sale

Unofficial 'Firefly' Serenity Lego kit goes on sale

Earlier in the year, a "Firefly" Serenity spaceship Lego playset gathered 10,000 supporters on Lego's Cuusoo site. Cuusoo is a little bit like Kickstarter for Lego geeks. Fans put kits together, gather votes, and have a shot at Lego putting their projects into production.

Lego Serenity, however, failed to pass Lego's review process to become reality. One reason Lego gave is that "Firefly" contains content that's inappropriate for its core target audience of children ages 6-11. I wonder what did it. Was it all the cursing in Chinese?

Fortunately, Lego and "Firefly" fans are much more resilient than that. The kit's designer is now offering eager builders an opportunity to buy the kit and make their own 2,186-piece Serenity ships.… Read more

Tape runs out for Sony's portable cassette recorders

Tape runs out for Sony's portable cassette recorders

Did one or two of your childhood crushes ever make you a treacly mix tape? Chances are good you listened to it -- over and over and over again -- on your Sony portable cassette player.

If so, it's time to get sentimental. Last week, a nondescript announcement out of Sony's Japanese division sounded a death knell for the portable cassette recorder/player -- a product category that helped the company rise to prominence decades ago.

The consumer electronics giant detailed how its current line of portable cassette recorders -- including the TCM-400, TCM-410, and TCM-450 -- stand as the company's last and will be discontinued by January. In a side announcement, a Sony representative noted that the company plans to continue selling blank cassette tapes, tape decks, and boomboxes with cassette support -- for now. … Read more
