Hyde Park on Hudson (2012) - [limited]- Biography | Comedy | Drama | History
The story of the love affair between FDR and his distant cousin Margaret Stuckley, centered around the weekend in 1939 when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited upstate New York.
Director:Roger Michell |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Feeling a bit like the American version Downton Abbey's second season, Roger Michell's first period foray since his debut, Persuasion, was discussed early on as an obvious awards contender, though that talk has otherwise dissipated after its tepid critical reception. That doesn't mean older audiences, who are being well served by a small clutch of other releases, won't embrace the look back at some of the sociopolitical maneuvering that preceded America's entry into WWII.
Playing for Keeps (2012)- Comedy | Romance
A former sports star who's fallen on hard times starts coaching his son's soccer team as a way to get his life together. His attempts to become an adult are met with challenges from the attractive soccer moms who pursue him at every turn.
Director:Gabriele Muccino |
|

The Buzz: And the point here is ... to reintroduce Gerard Butler as a virile leading man? We're always going to cringe when Butler opts for romantic comedies, especially when he teams up with heavy-handed director Gabriele Muccino (Seven Pounds, The Last Kiss) for some serious atonement and life lessons. We'd like to see Mavis Gary go off on every single main character.
Cheerful Weather for the Wedding (2012) - [limited]- Comedy | Drama
A young woman frets upstairs in her family's country manor on her wedding day, fearful she's about to marry the wrong man. Downstairs, both her fiancé and her former lover grow increasingly anxious.
Director:Donald Rice |
|
The Buzz: Felicity Jones didn't have her deserved breakout with Like Crazy, but this period film, based on Julia Strachey's novella should benefit from its solid advance reviews. Look for Elizabeth McGovern to be promoted to "Downton Abbey" fans, who could turn this into one of the holiday season's most enduring performers.
Heleno (2011) - [Limited]- Biography | Drama
A biography of the tragic life of one of Brazil's greatest soccer players, Heleno de Freitas.
Director:José Henrique Fonseca |
|
The Buzz: The talented and underutilized Rodrigo Santoro shouldered the responsibility of illuminating the life of troubled soccer star Heleno de Freitas by starring in and producing the project, which took a couple years to get off the ground for myriad reasons. We imagine the idea of an unflinching, black-and-white look at a sex symbol who ultimately died of syphilis at the age of 39 wasn't the easiest sell. But we are actually surprised that it wasn't picked as Brazil's nomination for the Best Foreign Language Oscar (that went to O Palhaço).
In Our Nature (2012) - [Limited]- Drama
A scheduling mistake leads to an estranged father and son sharing a vacation home with their respective girlfriends.
Director:Brian Savelson |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: We're wondering what this father-and-son drama might have been like if John Slattery had directed it. Since he's helmed several "Mad Men" episodes at this point, it's a matter of time (and of course the script and the funding) before Slattery makes his first feature. In a completely different film, you could cast Slattery, Gabrielle Union, Zach Gilford, and Jean Malone, then mix and match at will for a series of appealing couples.
Lay the Favorite (2012) - [limited]- Comedy
Beth, a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, falls in with Dink, a sports gambler who swoons for her as she proves to be something of a gambling prodigy, earning the initial ire of Dink's wife, Tulip.
Director:Stephen Frears |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Stephen Frears hasn't connected with audiences since The Queen, and his take on Beth Raymer's memoir doesn't look to improve on his recent track record, as festival reviews have sighed at the apparent lack of charm or spark. Rebecca Hall + Bruce Willis = no chemistry? Hard to imagine until you watch the initial trailer; between her baby-talk voice and his acting, which recalls The Whole Nine Yards, the best bet here might be to pass. Hopefully Frears will rebound with his Muhammad Ali project while his Freddie Mercury biopic starring Sacha Baron Cohen is about to get off the ground finally.
Neuk-dae-so-nyeon (2012) - [Limited]Fantasy | Romance
Summoned by an unexpected phone call, an elderly woman visits the country cottage she lived in as a child. Memories of an orphan boy she knew 60 years ago come flooding back to her.
Director:Sung-Hee Jo |

The Buzz: This South Korean hit is turning into a phenomenon on its native soil; now that it has bested Breaking Dawn - Part 2's opening weekend, a second version with an alternate ending is being prepped for release.
Deadfall (2012) - [limited]- Crime | Drama | Thriller
A thriller that follows two siblings who decide to fend for themselves in the wake of a botched casino heist, and their unlikely reunion during another family's Thanksgiving celebration.
Director:Stefan Ruzowitzky |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Nearly every review I've encountered confirms my initial reaction to this plot outline: a good movie is hiding within the overworked and convoluted narrative. Looks like another case of a foreign director losing his way with an American production; in this case, it's Stefan Ruzowitzky, whose The Counterfeiters won the Best Foreign Language Oscar.
