Install Genji On PS3 For Faster Load Times

An idea we can all get behind.

MTV's Stepehn Totilo wrangled some previously unreported information out of Sony's Gamer Day that should please future PS3 owners. Apparently gamers will be able to install Genji: Days of the Blade as part of a one-time process (is this what Sony meant about squashing game resale?).

The three-minute installation process, which begs the question of how much space is Genji using of the 4GB Blu-Ray disc, will reduces load times from 15 seconds to 4. It'll be interesting to see how many games support this process, as we can all appreciated decreased load times. However, do you think that this will kill the ability for resale of used games because players might (emphasis here, kids) be unable to duplicate the process if someone had previously installed the game on their PS3?

try 50GB. and we already knew the first batch of PS3 games might be slow-loading and the process will be fixed in the future.

You can reduce your load times in Genji II? Wow, that totally justifies $600 hardware and a $60 game. Find me on the Wii!

God I am really starting to get sick of all the stupid people on this site. For all of you that don't know how to actually read, have barely any brain cells that actually function, or are just so f'n biased you just want to spread bull, please listen. 1) You don't have to install the games. It's an option! 2) Hard drive do not eliminate load times. If you believe that, you've never played a computer game. They do lower load times because they are more efficient that pulling data directly off the disk, but games still need to be loaded into memory. 3) This is not some kind of conspiracy to make it so people can't sell used games. They has never been any attempt to do so. It was a stupid rumor based on MOVIES and had nothing to do with games. Never did. Maybe if 1up would do anything other than try to get fanboys riled up they wouldn't help push these stupid rumors so much. Thank you for reading, you can go back to being nearly braindead again now.

  • even Ridge Racer 7 has a similar feature

Jeff Gerstmann talked about it on last week's Sony special episode of On the Spot.

  • Doesn't Blu-Ray use AACS for copy protection?

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by JimmySunderland
I don't think the PS3 will allow you to copy entire games onto the HDD.

15 second load times for an action game is pretty bad. They should try streaming data and placing .5 to 1 second load points at various sections of a map.

  • neolimit, Blu-Ray isn't slower than DVD...

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by JimmySunderland
...at least, not necessarily. It has a constant read speed (CLV or constant linear velocity) as opposed to DVD's variable read speed (CAV or constant angular velocity) which is radius-dependant.

this seems to speak to those who are concerned that the blu-ray drive speed is slower than current gen DVD drives (IE the XBOX 360). If this is a standard feature of all games, perhaps it is meant to mitigate the fact that the drive itself may in fact be slower due to it being extremely new tech. Just a thought.

If Sony eventually gets it's way, there will be no more resale or personal selling/trading to a game store, of video games. This is why the digital distribution monster is growing ever so quickly over our heads. Installing the PS3 games on the HD is just the beginning of this. The increased access time isn't only a byproduct of this and isn't something Sony is engineering as a favor to the gamers.

  • Woah! 15 seconds?

Hard drives were supposed to eliminate load times, but now they drop them to only four seconds, at the cost of potentially gigabytes of drive space. Not the promise...

  • sony wasn't lieing when they called the PS3 a computer

Posted: userComment.createdDate by chaos and mayhem
I love the irony of this generation. Sony fanboys said that the XBOX was huge: The PS3 is not bigger than the orignial XBOX and XBOX 360 Sony Fanboys said that the XBOX was like a computer: You now have to install games in order to load faster making it very computer like Sony Fanboys said that the Wii controls were gay: Sony adds motion sensing to the PS3 Sony Fanboys rave about rumble in the PS2: PS3 has no rumble feature.

  • Doubt this is to prevent resale...

People have massive PS2 game collections, why should the PS3 be different? Even 60 divided by 4GB is only 15 games. People are going to have to uninstall eventually, so the process would have to be repeatable at a later stage... Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying. In which case, nevermind.

  • 60 gb HDD

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by Mortiferoz
The setup file can 4 gb aprox. But when the setup process unpacks all the necessary files, it can increase @ x4 or x5. Then the game can use about 16 or more gigas of space in the HDD. There's no point doin this just for reduce the loading times 10 seconds less.
