Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Aeronautical Systems, a division of Lockheed Martin Corporation, is one of the largest producers of military aircraft in the world. Its plant in Marietta, GA is the home of C-140, P-3 and F-22 production and related development programmes. It is engaged in the design, development, engineering and production of fighter, bomber, special mission, airlift, anti submarine warfare, reconnaissance, surveillance and high performance aircraft; systems for military operations; aircraft controls and subsystems; thrust reversers; and aircraft modification and maintenance and logistics support for military and civil customers.

In 1909 aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin launched the maiden voyage of his first aeroplane, made of silk and bamboo, in Santa Ana, California. 1911 saw Martin establish his first aeroplane factory in an abandoned Santa Ana cannery. The Glenn L. Martin Company incorporates a year later.

In 1912 Allan and Malcolm Loughead, along with Max Mamlock, head of the Alco Cab Company of San Francisco, form the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company. By 1913 Allan and Malcolm Loughead launch the maiden voyage of their first aircraft, a wood and fabric seaplane, over the San Francisco Bay. This lead to the Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company being established in Santa Barbara, California, in 1916.

This later (1926) becomes the Lockheed Aircraft Company in Hollywood, California. The name is spelled phonetically to alleviate earlier problems with mispronunciation.
