'Breaking Dawn' Earns $30.4M from Midnight/10 p.m. Thursday
13 hours ago
As expected, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 got off to a very impressive start last night. The fifth and final installment in the perennial franchise grossed an estimated $30.4 million from midnight and 10 p.m. Thursday showtimes, which is slightly higher than the midnight-only grosses for Breaking Dawn Part 1 ($30.25 million) and Eclipse ($30.1 million). It's also noticeably better than New Moon's $26.3 million.Unfortunately, Lionsgate/Summit have declined to break out the grosses from the 10 p.m. Thursday shows, which should not be counted towards the opening weekend figure (the weekend is Friday to Sunday, not Thursday night to Sunday). Clearly, though, opening at 10 p.m. on Thursday makes it easier for younger audience members to get to theaters, so the $30.4 million figure is probably going to make up a larger portion of opening day than past midnight-only hauls. If Breaking Dawn Part 2 does manage to follow Part 1's pattern from here, »

'Twilight' Finale Eyes Record Debut for Franchise
15 November 2012 4:22 PM, PST
Just four years after the franchise began, the fifth and final Twilight movie is expected to dominate the box office when it debuts at 4,070 locations this weekend. Assuming it gets the typical finale bump, Breaking Dawn Part 2 will easily score a franchise-best opening, and it could even be on track for a 2D opening record. Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln expands in to 1,775 locations after a successful week in limited release, though it's going to be competing for adult audiences with the flashier Skyfall. Overall, this is going to be one of the highest-grossing weekends ever, and it could even top the $259.9 million record set on the final weekend of 2009. In November 2008, the first Twilight movie surprised many box office observers when it debuted to a hefty $69.6 million on its way to a $192.8 million total. The movie's popularity grew on DVD, which caused many fans to seek out the book series as well. »

Around-the-World Roundup: 'Skyfall' Nears New Bond Record Overseas... >
13 November 2012 11:48 AM, PST
The big story this weekend may be Skyfall's record-setting domestic debut, but that doesn't change the fact that the movie's real strength continues to be its foreign performance. The 23rd James Bond adventure added $90 million from 80 markets this weekend for a new total of $429.6 million, which puts it a day away from passing Casino Royale ($431 million) to become the highest-grossing Bond movie ever overseas.*Skyfall's best market was once again Bond's native U.K., where the movie eased 30 percent to $18.2 million. It's now the highest-grossing movie of the year there with $117.5 million, and it's on pace to eventually pass Avatar's $150 million record. It was also impressive in Germany, where it dipped 30 percent to an estimated $15.1 million; Germany is now the movie's second-highest-grossing market with just under $44 million. Finally, in its third outing in France it dropped 46 percent to $8.2 million for a total of $42.5 million. Rolling in its domestic earnings, Skyfall has already earned $518.6 million worldwide, »
