Sleeping Dogs ships 1.5 million copies

Square Enix action game the company's best performing title during latest financial period; Dragon Quest X ships 700,000.

Square Enix's new action game Sleeping Dogs has shipped 1.5 million copies since launch this summer, the company announced today as part of its financial report for the six-month period ended September 30.

The United Front Games-developed project was Square Enix's best performing title during the period, outpacing the second strongest offering, Dragon Quest Monsters Terry No Wonderland 3D for the 3DS. That title has shipped 900,000 copies since launch in May, though it is available only in Japan.

Square Enix also disclosed shipment figures for Dragon Quest X (700,000 units in Japan), Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (650,000 copies), and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (150,000 units).

Sleeping Dogs is a resurrection of True Crime: Hong Kong, which Activision canceled in 2011. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review.

I like seeing new IPs do so well.  I can't wait for the next Dragon's Dogma.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy? Is FF like Mario now, making all kinds of spin-off games. Since a lot of people like/praise FF:s music I guess a rhytm game where you can "play some of your favorite Final Fantasy tunes" isn't too far-fetched. It's still got a way to go until it makes them play tennis or act doctors and whatnot.

This is the best open-ended game this year, simply because the combat mechanics is like the Warriors+ more kung fu. I played this game for 66 hours, mostly by doing the fight club missions because they are so awesome. It's a wonder how a combat mechanics can make a game worthwhile.

Kaz32 64 pts

And now I'm playing the extra content with Chinese vampires. The combat system works surprisingly well against them. BUY THIS GAME NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T!

In your face Avtivision! (Sucks at grammar :P)

People need to stop comparing this game to GTA. If you don't like GTA, then it's not for you, no need to bash it. Why does everything always got to be compared? The only similarity between Sleeping dogs and GTA is that they're both open world, other then that, they're nothing alike.  GTA is GTA, it's great the way it's always has been. Sleeping Dogs was also great and it deserves to sell alot, THE UNDERDOG (Activision, you see these nuts, suck it! lol), because it was about turning into a typical hong kong action flick into a game and they were SUCCESSFUL. The combat, the driving, the gunplay, the chase, the music, it was all brilliantly done. The story really pulls you in. For a while, I kept wondering why they call this game "Sleeping Dogs", it actually pertains to the ending (of  what COULD'VE happened to the main character). My only complaint was the surveillance drug bust missions were toooooo easy, they are many ways that they could have made it challenging.

Damn this game is great in real life i have seen some gruesome shit such as people getting shot up, blown apart and tortured in terrible ways with next to no disturbing effects to my emotional well being but those scenes with Mrs Chu getting back at those guys responsible for winstons death gave me nightmares

wcw1985 18 pts

This was the best game i played this year.

Looking forward for its sequel.

Darksider141 12 pts

Great game, hoping for a sequel.

Venatorcruiser 176 pts

A great game I like how the gang names in game are very similar to the names of real life triad families for example 18Kbeing a reference to the 14K triad and Sun On Yee being a reference to Sun Yee On i also like how the game is not far from reality on how these families behave

Venatorcruiser 176 pts

it is a shame Wo Shing Wo were not in the game because they are vicious bastards and would have been awesome to fight or even have the Wo Hop To in game as an allied faction

saffan 8 pts

mahavir_singh89 8 pts

I loved the game. It was an easy 8.5 out of 10 for me. But damn, Am I the only one who thinks 1.5 million copies isn't really a big number? I expected like 3 million copies to call this game a commercial success considering how much development time it took!!

Scorchstar 89 pts

mahavir_singh89 Considering AC3 got 3.5M... But I guess it's al about the type of person it's for. Many kiddies play AC, I don't think kids play Sleeping Dogs...

Rkvonack 13 pts

This game deserves it, this game is BAD ASS!

jsmoke03 212 pts

so thats a good thing right? this game didn't take 50 million to make right?

valium88 140 pts

Sleeping Dogs was ok IMO Nothing revolutionary, but ok entertainment. It's good GTA has competition to some extent making Rockstar work even harder on future titles. No one can really compete with Rockstar though....

Carpetfluff 224 pts

Ha. Good for them. Too bad for Activision.

Devil_wings00 32 pts

Hope we get a sequel because this was one of those rare open world games I really enjoyed. It lacked replay value though (side quests were pretty repetitive) and the story kind of fizzled out at the end. Everything just wrapped up a little to nicely for my taste. I d/l'ed the new DLC but haven't got around to playing it, hope it's decent...looked kind of silly and very different then the game though lol I hope every open world game adapts the car controls from this one. Never played an open world game with car controls this smooth. Heck I've played arcade racing games with worse driving mechanics.

ziproy 431 pts

Story-wise this game was absolute crap.

Everything else about it though made me believe in video game developers again. It really felt like you were walking around Hong Kong, especially all the screaming china-men who want you to buy things

don_saulari 36 pts

This game has a real good potential, but for some reason they decided to make it short and extremely linear!

Zensword 23 pts

Great game. One of very few games I gladly paid full price for.

AndCarlsen 257 pts

I'm really glad this game sold well. It deserves it.

Sleeping Dogs was freaking awsome!

Hope it gets a sequel.

DeathMetalPizza 45 pts

DrKill09 isn't it basically the third true crime game? either way, i'm really looking forward to buying this once all the dlc's out.

flammable_zeus 153 pts

Great game, it really deserves it. It really should sell more.

catsimboy 226 pts

And now they'll make a sequel with Lightning as the main character.

WCK619 651 pts

Sleeping Dogs was a pretty fun game but there was just too much wrong with it to call it great. Driving was terrible, story was shallow and boring, characters had too little depth to be interesting, fighting mechanics had potential to be far better, and some of the physics and graphics were laughably poor. Overall though it was fun for a while and certainly enjoyable.

jer_1 215 pts

Hah, so many morons think that 1.5 million = a failure. Idiocy at it's finest.

Mazinmichael 19 pts

jer_1 indeed. People seem to forget that not every game is cod and sells 10 million(which is stupid imo.) But for an unacknowledged game to sell that much is really significant. It gives me hope for a sequel.

Devil_wings00 32 pts

Mazinmichael  jer_1 ya that's pretty good for a new IP that kind of just came out of no where (well there was lots of marketing but I never really paid attention until after release).

leviathanwing 217 pts

Devil_wings00  not a new ip a renamed one.

crazycat690 37 pts

Lets hope this game gets as sequel, if any game this year deserve a sequel this game do... It had a rough development but in the end it turned out to be such a great and fun game, it was a pleasure to 100% this game.

Megavideogamer 441 pts

Sleeping Dogs seems to have been the Sleeper hit for 2012.

vihazur 88 pts

One of the best games this year, IMHO.

Anigmar 170 pts

Great game. I've been playing it on PC for 55 hours to complete with all collectibles, side missions and assets. Normal playthrough is 15-20 hours I guess but this game keeps you wanting to play which is not very common lately in this industry. Hope they keep bringing out good DLCs.

Lord_Python1049 304 pts

Sleeping Dogs is an awesome game! I'm so glad that Square Enix saved it from oblivion.

I remember being pissed off when Activision announced they were cancelling the game. It looked really good and seemed like an strange decision. Glad UFG was able to get it out to the public.

Kr3isen 56 pts

I loved SD and in my opinion its the first open world game of this kind that actually got the upper hand on GTA in terms of some of its features. It had great pacing, great setting and just hilarious hand to hand combat all of which GTA games have been failing at for years now.
