Why is He famous

Q, real name Major Boothroyd, is the head of Q Branch, the research and development division of the British Secret Service. He’s perhaps best known for assisting Britain’s most highly decorated secret agent, James Bond. Bond often credits Q’s inventiveness and knowledge of gadgetry as one of the secrets to his continued and unmatched success.

Q Quote

" “Must you touch everything?!”"

70 Magnetism

Though he’s a high-ranking government official who’s intelligent almost beyond comprehension, Q’s never been known to be the ladies' man that Bond is. Perhaps he’d be more of a hit with the fairer sex if he crossed the pond and used that British accent of his on some of the ladies here in the States.

95 Success

Q’s ability to adapt his gadgets and weaponry to the ever-changing technological landscape has been crucial in helping keep Bond alive all these years. Whether it was the Rolex equipped with a bullet-rerouting electromagnet or the Aston Martin outfitted with a cloaking device, few would argue that Q’s inventions aren't spy world game-changers.

Q Biography

ASSISTING BOND IN THE FIELD

While normally stationed at a secret MI6 base in London, Q has actually helped 007 out in the field a number of times. One such instance was in 1983, when Q directly assisted Bond in taking down General Orlov and Kamal Khan, two villains hell-bent on setting a nuclear bomb off on a U.S. Army base in West Germany. While Bond was busy diffusing the bomb, Q  took out a bunch of Orlov’s henchmen. A similar situation took place in 1989, when Q joined Bond in taking down Franz Sanchez, the leader of an international drug cartel.

Q’S GADGETS

Q’s impeccable craftsmanship when it comes to revolutionary spy weaponry is second to none. Some of his all-time greatest inventions include a wristwatch that shoots cyanide-laced darts, a cell phone that acts as a stun gun and fingerprint reader, a collapsible jetpack and his Lotus Esprit, a car that can transform into a submarine. Any agent would be lucky to have Q on his or her side.

LOCATING AURIC GOLDFINGER

Back in 1964, in what’s still considered one of Bond’s biggest victories, Q’s homemade homing beacons greatly assisted in Bond apprehending Auric Goldfinger, who was attempting to detonate an atomic bomb in Fort Knox. There were actually two homing devices. One was used by Bond to track Goldfinger, and the second was for MI6 to track Bond.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

In 1971, back when Bond was thwarting the plans of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Q provided the super spy with one of the most understated, but perhaps most clever of gadgets: a fake fingerprint that Bond used to trick Tiffany Case into believing he was someone else.

Q INVENTS THE FIRST SMARTPHONE?

In 1997, Q transformed an Ericsson cell phone into the ultimate spy gadget. Its features included a 20,000-volt stun gun, a fingerprint scanner, a universal lock pick and a remote control for operating Bond’s BMW 750il. Oddly enough, Q’s groundbreaking mobile phone technology actually wound up being a prototype of sorts for the Ericsson R380, one of the earliest smartphones. Sadly it was a prototype in design only, no stun gun was included in the R380.
