7 Of The Toughest Cars On The Road Today
When I touched down in Las Vegas last week for the SEMA trade show, courtesy of Toyota, it would be not only my first time in Vegas, but my first time off-roading. And not just off-roading, but off-roading between the towering red, fractured cliffs of sandstone rock. The guides told us not to even touch the stuff because it was so brittle it could crumble in our hands.
So, yes, I was scared. Not that I'm a bad driver... ahem... But the extent of my unparalleled driving capabilities ends at city limits and the occasional highway. Certainly not driving over rock faces in the middle of a desert.
But shockingly, I felt completely comfortable in the body-on-frame 4Runner, selecting low range with the dash-mounted rotary switch to climb up the rock face. Which led me to thinking, what other cars on the road today could handle that kind of terrain, and, more importantly, could also be used everyday.
