Final Fantasy XIV confirmed for PS3, PC
E3 2009: Second massively multiplayer installment in Square Enix role-playing franchise set for simultaneous worldwide launch in four languages.
LOS ANGELES--Earlier today at Sony's E3 media briefing, the console giant dropped the bomb that Final Fantasy XIV would arrive next year as a "PlayStation 3 console exclusive." Square Enix followed up on that today by confirming that the massively multiplayer online role-playing game would also be appearing on the PC.
Both versions of the game are set for a simultaneous worldwide release sometime in 2010. Additionally, the game will support four different languages at launch: Japanese, English, German, and French. Beyond that, the only detail imparted by the publisher was that the game would take place in the realm of Eorzea.
Final Fantasy XIV will be the second installment in the long-running role-playing game to take on the MMORPG genre. The first such game, Final Fantasy XI, debuted on the PC in 2003 and found its way to the PlayStation 2 the next year. An Xbox 360 edition followed in 2006. In a unique twist, the game allowed players from all three platforms to play together in the same gameworld.

the best thing in ff14 that it will get me out of ff11 cuz ff11 is my longest sad game .. as a mage Elvaan /sigh ff13 will be a cute break between 11 & 14
I can't wait for this game. I loved FFXI.
I tried FFXI, but as a 30-something female, I found the game to be crawling with teenagers. They were all polite to me and helped, but they had a lot more time to spend leveling up, so I could never really get too far without dying on the side of the road. ;P Anyway, I will buy XII and Versus and Agito. But the XIV may be a tough sell for me.
I've never tried an MMO but this is just too incredible looking to miss. I can't wait. For a game that looks this good ... I'll gladly give up my social life. Good-bye to all my friends.
God, why do they have to make another MMORPG and put the name "Final Fantasy" on it? This could be called "Eorzea Online" or whatever, but no, they have to be appealing and wasting an FF "number" with an MMORPG. ¬¬" Same for FFXI, and FFXII, although being a great RPG, shouln't have been called a Final Fantasy. Well, I'll just wait for FFXIII, which I believe is going to be a great game.
FFXI is profitable ATM for Square so I'm sure they won't dumb the old users so fast for FFXIV. It isn't easy to make a successful MMO these days. If anything, I would expect Square to be bringing the game out on as many platforms as possible. Hope they will add some good PVP in there.
Connect! On has a nice summary of the current information on FFXIV. Check it out at Final Fantasy XIV Fan, it's at the front page. It's a rather long read, but well worth it.
the console war is over guys just stop being poor and get all the systems. In the end its well worth the money. and unless your playing the games side by side so u can see what your missing you cant tell the difference. and until you play MSG4 and it blows your mind thats when you realize that PS3 is the superior machine when matched with a superior game.
Too, bad they really could have used this opportunity (14) to deliver a true Final Fantsy VII sequel.
Oh very great
FF XIV is going to rock
This game is going to be awesome.
oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Yep. There's a FF for just about your every mood.
@rann89 oh so outdated... thats why most games on 360 looks better. PC's are like a 30 year old rash hardwares. Anyway who needs FFXIV anyway, FFXI was crap, one of the lowest selling FF in the series...
its just to pleased Sony.... only for now, just like FFXIII, ps3 exclusive... oh wait.... ps3 AND 360.... oh wait, ps3 first THEN 360.... oh wait, we'll release it world wide at same time... same ol' tease, i'm sure 360'll get it at the same time.... too much $$$ to loose
At least the PC is on this.
cool!
kool...
rann89~ Um... wow... I can't believe I just read that. You do realize that the 360 has a more powerful GPU than the PS3 and for games GPU matters more than CPU hence all the dual platform games looking better on 360. This is just stating facts. Plus MMOs aren't that graphically intense because they wanna minimize slowdown and lag when there's like 100 people on the screen. As for your discs comment um... MMOs are installed to the harddrive and always run from the harddrive so what you said is kinda irrelevant.
I can see it not showing up on the 360. This isn't an insult, but 360 hardware is getting outdated. PS3 and PC are probably the only things that can control all the renders, and also probably the only ones that can fit enough information on their disks. It'd be awkward to play an MMO on 360 when you need 2 or 3 disks just to hold everything.
no reason not to put this on the 360 they are just holding out to get more money
Yay, I like this idea. = ]
hey Nerevarine I think you meant the TWO Million active ffxi subscribers right?
GOOD NEWS
I'm thinking that this game will definitely end up on the 360 simply die to the fact that square Enix knows that with mmo's it's very important to get it to as many people as possible. That paired with the fact ffxi was dropped on xbox 360. If there's any speculation that it's going to be a ps3 exclusive maybe Sonyjust wants to sell a few extra systems before they officially announce it to xbox 360. Even though since the initial announcement they have already said they are in fact considering bringing it to "microsoft hardware". Could that mean a xbox 720 title?
I do not mind Final Fantasy XIV being an MMORPG. I am glad about this anyway. I hope this will replace Final Fantasy XI.
no surprise there, most of MMRPG are avaible for PC
seriously, enix...? hopefully this will grab the half dozen people who subscribe to XI still, as for everyone else, theres wow. FOCUS ON THE GAMES YOU HAVE BEEN MAKING FOR THE PAST TWENTY TWO YEARS, YOUR MASTERPIECES. THERE IS NO MMORPG RACE. have fun losing money to blizz
Argh, just hurry up with XIII =(
If someone doesn't acknowledge a games exclusivity to a console then they are either ill informed or is a rabid fanboy. But yes, both Alan Wake and Mass Effect 2 are console exclusives, meaning the Xbox 360 is the only console you can play the games on.
okay so Mass Effect 2 and Alan Wake are console exculsive for xbox 360. I don't know when I'm on the forums PS3 fans usually don't acknowledge games like Gears, Mass Effect, Left 4 dead as exculsive for 360 because their on PC.
If a game is exclusive to a console they state that is an Xbox/PS3 exclusive...because it'll be the only CONSOLE you can get the game on. A PC is not a console. If the game can only be played on the Xbox or PS3 and nothing else they'll say "Only on PS3/Xbox" because you can ONLY play it on those systems. Examples of a game that you can ONLY play on Xbox is Dead Rising, and a game that you can ONLY play on PS3 is InFamous. Since neither of those games are on the competitors or even the PC it's an "Only on" or "exclusive" title. So there is a difference between a "console exclusive" and an "exclusive"
Ha, a PC doesn't count for console exclusivity, never has. I guess because PC and PS3/360 are not direct competitors or something like that.
So PS3/PC are exculsive but 360/PC aren't okay
@Niccara - Apparently not. Because "Xbox exclusive" or "PS3 exclusive" means "This game is only on this system and no other system on the planet".
So.. with some of the xbot logic.. Gears of War, Halo, Left 4 Dead, and Mass Effect are not xbox exclusives now to because of PC versions of those games?
@paul265 - Yes....yes it is. Read this article again...even the title states that it is exclusive to PS3. Hopefully you aren't one of the people that think a PC is a console and therefore makes the exclusivity a false statement. @peachest1347 - You're most likely right about point one. But since nothing else about the game is known I'll refrain from speculating more about where it will head to later. As for your second point...both games are being developed simultaneously, meaning both games can be released in the same year/month/day/whatever. They aren't halting development on one game for another.
Another MMORPG Final Fantasy? Looks like this will be the second Final Fantasy I can pass on (the first being XI). I don't understand why they don't make the mass online games an offshoot Final Fantasy franchise of themselves.
1. FF 14 will not remain exclusive 2. how are they already announcing 14 when 13 isn't even out yet?
Final fantasy 14 isn't exculsive to PS3 goddammit
Square is redic next year, 3 FF games and 3 KH games, someone is gunna be rich. AS for the x-box, its a terrible system, it has gotten games that it shouldn't so you should all be thankful for what you have and stop complaining. Im also so happy that ff7 was available for dl yesterdsay, ill bet they make redic money there too!
ThisIsntLeonard~ you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Square-Enix are the ones that charge the fee through their PlayOnline service, it has nothing to do with MS or Sony. And FFXI on 360 does not require you to be a Gold member, you can play it as a free Silver member, but either way you have the fees from Square-Enix. Whether you play FFXI on PC or 360 or PS2 its the same thing you need to run PlayOnline software first and log on before you play FFXI. FFXIV will be the same.
I hope they space the release of these game out enough that I don't have to spend $180 dollars in one month on Final Fantasy games alone. XIII Versus XIII XIV
DMLSLAT~ You say you don't understand why you have to pay a monthly fee for MMO, so let me tell you why. The price you pay at retail for the game is meant to cover the development costs, but with MMOs the companies have extra costs of maintaining high end servers 24/7 and customer service (both in-game and not) and all the employees this entails. Also Tanaka and his team will work constantly on the game releasing many new features and activities every couple months for free. FFXI has 4 retail expansions but a lot of awesome content for it has been released in these free quarterly updates.
The key to this exclusivity, and why it'll stay exclusive until atleast post PS3 release, is that the PSN is free to use, therefore an MMORPG between consoles would be unfair to the players, if some had to pay for their online service while others didn't. Therefore, FF XIV will be exclusive to PS3 and PC, and not require a server payment, which would be impossible on the 360.
Apparently people are still confused about the exclusivity of FFXIV... Tretton said that it will be the only CONSOLE you can play XIV on...not the only SYSTEM you can play it on. So quit confusing the fact that a PC is a console please, because it is clearly not, in any way a console. Never has been and never will be.
AncientDozer is right, why do you care about exclusivity sequekhan? Let me just tell you now that this game is definitely coming to 360. Tanaka said a while back that the next MMO was in development for 360, PS3 and PC using CrystalTools. Also if you listen to Trenton's announcement he uses his words carefully. "...Playstation3 will be the only console you'll be able to play Final Fantasy XIV on when it launches in 2010." meaning that when the game launches PS3 will be the only console to have it. The 360 version will be released later, maybe alongside the 1st expansion. Square-Enix aren't stupid they aren't gonna shun their potential customers, especially the ones that currently play FFXI on 360. Personally I don't care I have a 360, a PS3 and a PC, but I must say the party chat on 360 is really nice for FFXI, I can only hope Sony will have something similar up and running on the PS3 when FFXIV comes out.
Gotta love the 14th installment of what was a "Final" Fantasy. Pretty stupid not to develop it for the 360 as well, since you're adding to your customer base and creating a more active game world.
