App Wrap Up (Week Ending 12th October 2012)

Hey hey folks! It's the end of the week, and even though it's been a little while, it's time for another installment of the App Wrap Up! As always we're gonna have a look at some games that may be interesting based on their trailers. Whether they're worth your time and money, well that's for you to decide! Now let's move onward! Royal Revolt (flaregames GmbH)

We've seen the reverse Tower Defence game done before, but this has such a nice art style and what looks to be some interesting upgrades that i think fans of the genre should give it a look. It is a free app, so there could be limitations designed around in-app purchases. The question is whether they hin... Read More

Dead Stop™ Review

Review Chillingo Ltd By Dave Flodine, 4 days, 11 hours ago
Dead Stop™ Review

Dead Stop is a combination of two overplayed elements of the App Store. The first is the use of zombies, and the second is creating a game type similar to that of a very popular title. In the second case, the tower defense genre has waned in popularity the last couple of years, and if a game is good, who cares if it uses the undead? Dead Stop has these rationales working in its favor, delivering a solid TD experience that happens to feature zombies as its main antagonizers. The zombie...

Mistwalker releases Blade Guardian

News By Harry Slater, 1 week, 5 days ago
Mistwalker releases Blade Guardian

Mistwalker, the studio set up by legendary Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, has released its second iOS game, a tower defence title caled Blade Guardian. The game certainly looks impressive, with blobby cartoon monsters, and plenty of levels for you to sink your defensive real time strategy teeth into. It's certainly a more conventional game than Mistwalker's first attempt at an App Store title, Party Wave, which drew on Sakaguchi's love of surfing to create a strange mix of dolphin poking and big wave catching. Blade Guardian should be available from the App Store right now, and it'll cost you $0.69 to find out if Mistwalker's magic touch with the JRPG can transfer to the some... Read More

App Wrap Up (Week Ending, 31st August 2012)

Howdy Ho Neighbourinos. It's the end of the week, the end of August, and time for another segment of the App Wrap Up! As always, the apps we feature here are here based on their trailers alone, as they look interesting enough to warrant potential further investigation. If you try anything out, be sure to tell us what you think in the comments. And now, on with the show! Rbots (a10.com)

A disembodied robot head, magnets, and puzzle physics platforming. It touts single touch gameplay, but whether or not it's implemented well, well that remains to be seen.

Bad Hotel Review

Review Lucky Frame Limited By Andrew Nesvadba, 1 month, 3 weeks ago
Bad Hotel Review

It takes a certain kind of mad clarity to sit there and take the genre of 'Tower Defense' as literally as Bad Hotel does. Conceptually Lucky Frame's game is the same as it ever was - drop blocks as defenses against an onslaught of creatures bent on destroying your base, but this time around you're actually building the eponymous hotel, adding rooms to accommodate tourists and shoot down sentient clouds. I may have lost you on that last point. See, your task is simple - build a profita...

Friday News Wrap-Up 17 August 2012

Man... where has the year gone? We're already two thirds of the way through 2012; the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini is on the horizon; and we haven't even seen the biggest releases hit yet. I may just be falling in to the cycle of hype, but I can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us. For now lets cover the news of the last week or so in the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 17th of August, 2012. Real Boxing - Unreal graphics

Polish developer Vivid Games may be better known for titles like Shoot to Kill or (my personal favorite) the re-release of Speedball 2 for the iOS platform. The prolific studio isn't slowing down its pace one iota and is joining the Unreal... Read More

Top 3 iOS Games for July 2012

Up, down, up, down - this time of year is certainly proving to be a confusing one as we find the occasional bright, shining gem, only to be left dealing with a swathe of average titles that fail to live up to expectations. I'm still holding out hope for August's titles, but for those of you who can't wait lets go over the highlights as we cover the Top 3 iOS games for July, 2012. Editor's Choice: Tentacle Wars (FDG Mobile) $0.99

First off the block is a game that takes a formula we've seen played around with in the past, but for the first time in quite a while someone has managed to add a unique twist that adds a surprising amount of depth. Tentacle Wars not only places... Read More

Commando Jack Review

Commando Jack Review

It seems that the tower defense genre has been sort of played out for the last couple of years. Oh yes new games come out that add something interesting to the formula, and games come out that remind us why the genre became so popular to begin with, but it's only in the last year or so we've seen an evolutionary shift in tower defense, and what's more is that this shift is so simple, it's amazing not many developers thought of it before. I am of course talking about allowing the player to ent...

Friday News Wrap-Up 27 July 2012

As things begin to stabilize around the office, I find myself relaxed and glad I can finally take up the reins on the Friday News Wrap-Up once again. As you can imagine, we were in a tight-pickle last week, but I stand by my choice to provide the review that was much needed at the time. As such, we have a glut of great news for this week, but we've picked some of the juicier ones just for you.

This is the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 27th of July, 2012. Armed Heroes MMO - An odd response to asset theft claims

Lets kick off the week with good, old drama. Armed Heroes, an upcoming MMO for the iOS platform has been looking utterly amazing of late, with features t... Read More

Fieldrunners 2 Review

Review Subatomic Studios, LLC By Andrew Nesvadba, 2 months, 3 weeks ago
Fieldrunners 2 Review

When Fieldrunners by Subatomic Studios first launched, AppSpy wasn't even up and running. However, it was one of the very first to be reviewed and with good reason - Fieldrunners came to define the tower defense genre for touch devices, combining an open-layout system and grueling challenges that required players to design their mazes carefully to survive as long as possible. Almost four years in the making, the sequel finally hits, but with plenty of regular updates to the original a...

Corn Quest Review

Corn Quest Review

When a genre is firmly established, two things generally happen - you end up with your niche fans who almost exclusively live and breathe said games, and you start to push out a lot of regular folk who are sick of seeing the same thing over and over again. Still, the tower defense gameplay has remained a popular one despite its almost rigorous formula. Even still, it's nice to be reminded that there are still fresh ideas to be explored and Corn Quest by Namco manages to nicely use the iOS' to...

A Sequel to Boom Brigade - Out Now

A Sequel to Boom Brigade - Out Now

It seems a lot of the news this week is releases for this Thursday. Well, here's another. Remember Boom Brigade? It was a tactical tower defense / line drawing game all the way back in the distant year of 2009. Well it seems that almost three years later 10tons Ltd. have made a sequel. Here's a trailer of some of the gameplay... It looks to play very similar to its predecessor, but all this time later, it's hard to say whether or not such gameplay will resonate with gamers. Still it's been quite a while since both the line drawing and tower defense crazes of that period so it might be a blast of not only nostalgia, but a fun experience. We'll have a review of Boom Brigade 2 up in... Read More

Defender Chronicles II: He... Review

Review Gimka Entertainment, Inc. By Dave Flodine, 4 months, 2 weeks ago
Defender Chronicles II: Heroes of Athelia Review

The first Defender Chronicles was rated quite highly by us here at AppSpy, and with good reason. When Tower Defense games were all the rage on the iPhone, it approached the genre with its own spin on things, which included vertical combat, designated build areas, upgradable heroes, and a whole host of additional game modes. This meant fans had enough content to keep them happy for a very long time. Years later now, the sequel is upon us. With a fresh coat of paint and more hero customization,...

iPhone Tower Offense Classic Anomaly Warzone ...

News By James Nouch, 5 months, 2 weeks ago
iPhone Tower Offense Classic Anomaly Warzone Earth Currently Half Price

11 bit studios's tower offense classic Anomaly Warzone Earth is currently available at half its usual price. The vanilla iPhone app is down to just 99c (from its usual $1.99), while the fancy Universal app for devices with Retina displays is down to $1.99 (from its usual price of $3.99). In an inspired bit of role reversal, Anomaly Warzone Earth tosses aside the well-worn tower defence template aside and casts you as the attacking force. Assaulting a heavily fortified position, you'll need to think strategically, exploiting your units' strengths to destroy enemy defences and deploying power-ups wisely to press home your advantage. We simply couldn't get enough of Anomaly Warzone Earth's ... Read More
