New slots apps are conquering iOS devices. Playing them on your device might be something you would do with excitement, or, on the other hand, you wouldn't even consider downloading it. Whatever your personal choice is, games developer Gamesys hope that their product - Jackpotjoy Slots - will tempt you to give it a go! We spoke to James Gibson, Marketing Manager at Gamesys. He explains how the game attempts to suit a wide range of different skill levels, what problems came up when designing the app, and what the future holds for Jackpotjoy Slots. Karateka heading to iOS devices this month

Jordan Mechner might be best known for his work on Prince of Persia, but the legendary game creator has a pretty impressive and varied back catalogue as well. We've already seen an iOS version of his point and click adventure The Last Express, and now we're being treated to an updated edition of his classic beat 'em up Karateka. While the screens on show here are from the home console version, it's likely that the iOS port is going to do just as much justice to the redesigned fighter as its home based brethren. Described as a "rhythm based story-fighter" in the press release, Karateka is an update rather than a straight remake, but still sees you battling foes in an attempt to free your... Read More

Sword of Fargoal 2 gets Kickstarted

The best success stories are always the ones that skirt dangerously close to failure. So it was with Sword of Fargoal 2's Kickstarter adventure, which saw the retro Rogue-like scrape past its funding amount with seconds to spare. The game is a true sequel to a C64 dungeon crawler that came out more than a quarter of a century ago and challenged you to raid randomly generated dungeons in order to discover and reclaim the titular sword. This new polished version will feature new monsters, new dungeons, new heroes - pretty much new everything really, while drawing on the legacy of the original. If you fancy trying out some old school dungeon crawling action and you can't wait for Fargoal 2, ... Read More

The Last Express arriving on the App Store on the 27th

If you're a fan of point and click adventures, then Thursday is a day to mark in your diary, because it sees the release of The Last Express, a forgotten classic of the genre created by Prince of Persia's Jordan Mechner. Set on the Orient Express in 1914, the game is a mix of mystery, suspense, action, and romance, all presented in a unique and gorgeous cartoon style. Heavily praised on its original release, the game didn't quite grab the mainstream's attention, but many die hard point and clickers consider it the finest example of the genre ever created. This iOS version is a faithful port by the team at DotEmu, whose previous smartphone and tablet credits include R-Type and Another Worl... Read More

Friday News Wrap-Up 21 September 2012

With the iPhone 5 officially out, I honestly can’t hold all of these Apps I need to review. Dave and I are working overtime to sort through them all, but until then you can enjoy the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 21st of September, 2012. Coaster Crazy - Out Later This Year

Those familiar with Frontier Developments will remember their work on LostWinds and LostWinds 2, and in particular, the solid iOS adaptions of both titles. Coaster Crazy is set to also hit the App Store and places you in charge of designing roller-coasters that need to cater to every patron’s whim, be it fast loops, speedy turns, or scary drops. There’s a sort of Rollercoaster Tycoon v... Read More

Spectromancer Review

[This game was featured as the mini-review for the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 21st of September, 2012] If you’ve played Hothead’s ‘Kard Combat’ then you’ll know what you’re in for with Three Donkeys’ iPhone and iPad title ‘Spectromancer’. Players are handed a ‘deck’ comprised of an infinite amount of various cards, each requiring a certain amount of ‘mana’ to cast. Each turn you’ll earn a base...

Sponsored Feature: China Wireless Arts on Armed Beasts

Shoving weaponry into the hands of cartoon animals such as rabbits, dogs, and lions might sound a desperate move - but publishers China Wireless Arts are keen to emphasise that Armed Beasts is much more than just an amusing concept. The overhead shooter throws in a range of enemies, locations, and mission objectives to keep you interested after the thrill of a bull firing a chaingun has long since worn off. Wendy Don from China Wireless Arts spoke to us about how the game has a range of locales to explore, weapons to sample, and what the multiplayer options involve. AppSpy: What does Armed Beasts offer that no other overhead shooter on the App Store can? Wendy: Armed Beasts is a 3D gam... Read More

The World Ends with You: Solo Remix for iPad Review

You know a game has a grip on you when you say something like, "I'd have bought a Nintendo DS just to play it". The World Ends With You (TWEWY) was just such a game for me, and knowing that I'd get to play it again on the iOS platform immediately dredged up a host of happy memories spent lazily enjoying its Beat'em-up RPG-like gameplay. The reason I'm gushing from the outset is to establish a base-level of 'rose-tinted glasses' for our readers/viewers and perhaps to soften the blow of the fol...

Big Square Enix Port Released over the Weekend

The rumours of the release were leaked late last week, but we wanted to wait for confimation, and now we have it. Square Enix are porting a version of The World Ends With You to iOS devices. It's titled Solo remix, and is available for iPhone 4 and iPad 2 users. It will set you back about $18 - $20 depending on version and region. The original DS version is one of my favourite RPGs of the last 10 years so it's nice to see a mobile port. I wonder how they designed around the single screen of the iPhone and iPad, as it was the duel screen combat that made the game so unique and memorable. We'll find out when our review of this title goes up sometime this week!

BLAZING STAR Review

BLAZING STAR Review

There are many game systems that while having a decent collection of titles, just never gained widespread market appeal and withered because of this. Luckily thanks to downloadable services, re-releases, remakes, and the App Store, a lot of the best games of these systems can be played by a whole new generation of fans. One such example is the Neo Geo Home System, and the subject of the current review, Blazing Star. Released in 1998, what we have here is a classic side-scrolling shoot...

iMpulse Controller for Smart Phones

iMpulse Controller for Smart Phones

In a lot of our reviews, you would have heard us bemoan the lack of responsive controls, especially on games that are ports from console or PC where you have a keyboard or controller to deal with. With that in mind, it's always neat to see a company create a controller to interface with smart phones, and the iMpulse is such a device. Touted as small and wireless, this controller fits on your keyring, has USB connection as well as long battery life. Since it's supposed to go on your keychain, your phone can help you find your keys if you misplace them. While sounding good in theory, developers need to make their games compatible with the device, and its tiny frame might prove uncomfortable ... Read More

Sponsored Feature: Barunson Creative On AquaVillage

Ever wondered what it'd be like to raise your own collection of digital fish? Probably not, but there's a first time for everything. AquaVillage, Barunson's latest iOS title, is a leisurely strategic experience with a social twist, allowing players to build up their own underwater kingdom while gradually unlocking an expansive array of fish. We spoke to JongSin Choi, CEO at Barunson Creative, about the social elements of the game. With over two hundred quests to venture through in the game as one of four main characters, AquaVillage is a large scale adventure - but also a global social gaming experience, supporting seven different languages. "We combined multiple genres so that players... Read More

FPS Classic Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum Currently Free To Download

Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum, the updated port of id Software's 1992 FPS classic, is currently available as a free download from the App Store. Playing as the suggestively named B.J. Blazkowicz, a captured US agent who's being held in Castle Wolfenstein, you simply have to escape alive. Yep, that's the objective, folks. But, it won't be easy. The Castle is crawling with nasty Nazi guards, vicious attack dogs, and terrifying undead supersoliders. Should you manage to fight your way past these horrors, you'll eventually have to battle robo-Hitler in a climactic boss battle. All historically accurate, of course. It may be a little long in the tooth (Wolfenstein celebrates its 20th anniv... Read More

Pandemic 2.5 Review

Pandemic 2.5 Review

It's a strange thing, but some may know the meme, but not the game that was responsible for creating it - I am of course referring to Pandemic II by Dark Realm Studios. Even if you were half way around the world, Madagascar closed its borders if it heard you had a runny nose. The developer is back, this time in iOS form, to bring its infamous infection simulator to the masses, adding in a few tweaks to make it a worthwhile purchase for returning fans. Your task is simple - infect and ...

Top 3 iPhone Games for April 2012

April has been an odd month - not particularly bursting with amazing titles, but not short of highlights either. As such this month's list is far more personal than ever and I'll try to explain my choices as best I can. Was there something you went gaga for this April? Let us know down in the comments.

For now, this is AppSpy.com's Top 3 iPhone Games for April, 2012. Max Payne Mobile (Rockstar Games) $2.99 Univ.

I accept that I seem to be in the minority in loving the iOS port of Rockstar Games' seminal third-person shooter, but its simplicity is what works in its favor, especially on a touch device. Clearing out rooms of enemies with a casual spray of a weap... Read More
