Amazon Paint

2D/3D paint for Video, HD and Film

Amazon 2D

Amazon Paint, the industry standard paint system, has been used on such films as Shrek, Moulin Rouge, Monsters Inc, The Matrix, Titanic, The Fifth Element, and Starship Troopers. With an extensive palette of tools in addition to the flexibility of user customizable scripting and macro editing, Amazon is the final word in digital paint technology.

Two optional modules are available: Amazon 16, which enables Amazon to paint with 16 bits of color per channel, & Amazon 3D, which extends Amazon Paint onto a real-time 3D canvas.

Amazon 2D

Tools

Amazon has a palette of over 50 image processing filters. Advanced color correction and compositing features, in addition to an extensive array of transform and warp effects, make Amazon one of the most feature rich paint systems currently available to the effects community.

Plug-in Capability

Amazon's C-based Plug-in specification allows user to write custom tools, image processing effects and file format converters quickly and easily.

Scripting

Amazon's powerful TCL scripting language provides full control over almost every aspect of the application. Scripts can be used to automate repetitive tasks, or to create new brush tools and effects.

Layer Management

Amazon's layer management allows for easy manipulation of Amazon's multi-layer paint capabilities. Blend layers with varying opacities, toggle layer visibility, and composite in real-time while you work.

Brushes

Amazon has over 20 brush effects. Parameters are controllable via Wacom pressure pens. Customizable brush outline editing lets artists quickly build new tools specific to their painting needs

File Support

Amazon 3 currently supports over 20 different image formats including TIFF, SGI, Targa, JPEG, Maya IFF, Softimage, Houdini, Alias, DPX and Kodak Cineon files.

Amazon 16/64-bit

Used by premier effects companies such as Pixar, Digital Domain and Sony Pictures Imageworks, the Amazon 16 option provides fast, high dynamic
range paint capabilities with a multitude of display features.

Benefits

  • True "64 bit" painting: 16 bits R, G, B and Alpha.
  • All the features of Amazon 2D and 3D Paint in 64 bits.
  • Soft-switchable between 64 and 32 bit while you work.
  • Active dithering for accurate display of 48 bit color on 24 bit monitors.
  • Powerful realtime display control for viewing high and low end pixel values.

Extended File Support

In addition to the standard formats listed above, Amazon 16 works with 16 bit per channel TIFF, SGI, DPX, and allows expansion of 4:4:4 YUV. For 10-bit log Kodak Cineon and DPX files, Amazon 16 provides reliable custom curve based expansion and compression algorithm which allows facilities to match display to the film recorder of their choice.

Amazon 3D

Amazon 3D extends all the power of Amazon Paint onto the 3D canvas, where artists can create texture, bump and displacement maps in real-time. Amazon 3Ds has been used in over 50 major motion pictures including The Grinch, Armageddon, Titanic, and The X-Files: Fight The Future.

Amazon 3D

Multiple Model / Multi-Resolution

Amazon 3D allows for multiple models to be loaded into the 3D canvas. Textures can vary resolution from model to model. Paint across seams and surface blends for quick and professional results.

Full 2D System

Because 3D paint is an extension to the Amazon 2D system, a myriad of brush and image processing effects are possible as well as full scripting and macro capabilities

UV Paint

Amazon 3D paint lets the user paint directly onto models and see the results update in realtime both on the 3D view as well as the 2D texture map. Real-time OpenGL hardware preview with displacement and shader support gives the artist perspective on their work.

Projection Paint

3D paint also supports a full projection based painting system. Using projection, a flat 2D image is able to be manipulated and painted on and then projected onto the texture of the 3D model.

UV Editing

3D Paint includes a UV editor for allowing artists to hand manipulate the texture coordinates of many models. UV optimization can be especially
useful for game design.

Next Generation Projectile Paint

It only took 10 years for hardware to reach the level necessary for projectile paint to really shine. (ie be fast enough to be usuable) Addressing the problems of painting on surfaces which cause textures to appear stretched or distorted. As opposed to projection and UV paint methods, projectile paint is truly 3D. Paint is transferred to the surface of 3D models with physics and accuracy previously unattainable by projection and UV paint technologies. Because projectile paint is real 3D paint, you can avoid stretching while painting from a variety of brush angles on the model. Cloning from one model's texture to another is effortless and has none of the distortion or dynamic range loss associated with UV and projection painting.

Houdini, Softimage, and Alias|Wavefront support

Amazon 3D Paint supports all geometry types from all 3 packages including patches, trimmed NURBS, and of course polygons.
