  • never thought I would still be watching by now

I'm still watching - the drama is getting a little soapy, but I can see the long story unfolding: unrepentant Juliette must join up with Rayna the Headliner for the tour to make money and to regain her fan base, while they're out on tour, Teddy gets caught bangin his high school flame, yada yada. But then last week I see Deacon stand up to Rayna's Asshat Dad, and then strut out on stage and pull out a classic root-beer Gibson 335, and WOW - that is one beautiful guitar. And this week the Asshat boyfriend plays some very nice backup licks, and their harmonies are very good - the song wasn't the best, but it's actually them singing, so I'm okay with it. don't know how long I'll watch, but I'm still watching now. We all know Connie is a very good actress, but Hayden has really surprised me with her range and believability.moreless

Pretty good music but the plot is right out of your favorite soap opera
  • Put the show on rinse cycle

    5.0
I watched a coupla episides of this cause being a music fan I enjoy good country music. This show isn't about country, or music.

I strongly suspect most of the players are miming actual musicians who may be less photogenic or don't wanna put the time in to appear in front of the cameras. Acting ability is not a prerequisite for getting a crack on "Nashville" which isn't to say they are all bad actors, just that some of em are.

In particular the blonde who features in the rags to riches waitresss to country star sub-plot.

This is just another soap opera with the usual band of hastily sketched caricature type roles. Must not be surprised when a character does something that feels like its goin against type cause this show has people doin what-ever the plot demands, irrelevant to the perceived character's likely behaviour.

The thing I dislike most about these formulaic parodies of real drama is that after a coupla seasons everyone is painted a shade of grey.

The tyrannical and overbearing tycoon dad has already shown he has a heart buried under scar tissue as the cliche goes. He's not the sociopath that most tycoons are in real life. No this chap empathises alright, he just doesn't let that empathy reveal itself in his behaviour.

Rubbish in other words, about as real as a marzipan dildo, but since many of the people who watch this sort of show can't separate the personality of the character from that of the actor, Hollywood agents insist that their talent gets an opportunity to show a 'nice side' less viewer distaste makes the talent struggle for work in the future.

Similarly the 'nice' peeps, the ones who the viewers like to daydream themselves as inevitably end up doing something outrageously bad. Not because that is what someone who spends their life endeavouring to 'follow the rules' would ever do, but because ratings begun a downward slide and TV producers know that nothing attracts viewers more than the opportunity to take vicarious pleasure in watching a goodie two shoes reveal him/herself to be a real stinkeroo.

And the music? A few over-rated 'blasts from the past' maybe the odd classic interspersed with a really vapid take on modern country. Country music frozen in Fringe style amber.

There was a pilot for another TV show about country musicians called "Outlaw Country" . Is that still a goer or has it been tossed aside in favour of this soapie?

Not that "Outlaw Country" didn't also feature a script driven plot rather than a character driven one, it also had its share of cliches, but I hope it gets another chance. Maybe "Nashville" will inspire the producers of "Outlaw Country" to go for quality drama since the LCD MOR slot has already been filled.moreless
  • Please stick around!

My new favourite show, I hope it is here for good! I'm from Australia so I don't know a lot about the Nashville scene, but the Pilot was great - love the actors, the characters, the inter-connecting storylines and the music.

I'm not a huge fan of Hayden Panettiere but her spoiled brat attitude was spot on. Connie Britton is just a legend and I'll watch anything with her in it!

Love love love it - get on board and support it so it doesn't get cancelled!!moreless
