"Gore Bike Wear continue to set the standard for out-and-out performance on the bike"

When you’ve worn a lot of different jackets there’s something like coming home about pulling on a style that has a perfect cycling cut and the most breathable fabric. And that’s exactly what the Fusion boasts. A pared-down design with no bells and absolutely no whistles, it’s an exercise in bike-minimal performance that just works.

There’s only one chest pocket, but both it and the front have waterproof zips – they can be firm to use but you will appreciate the very close seal. If you usually find Gore jackets on the slim side, it’s worth noting that this cut is more generous, and thanks to the strategically placed stretch fabric through the shoulders and forearms and shaped sleeves, the whole jacket moves with you.

A fine fleece collar catches drips at one end while a well-designed drawcord cinches the back hem in to keep draughts and stray splashes out at the other.

The fabric is the light and ultra-breathable Gore-Tex Active. Since we’ve been testing this we haven’t bothered with our usual windproof on ‘iffy’ days that would usually be deemed too warm for a waterproof, just opting for the Fusion instead.

It can be hard to justify spending £200 on a jacket but once you’ve ridden in this you’ll start to understand why you should – the technical performance is outstanding, and the attention to detail for the cut and on-the-bike comfort is unmatched.
