The Halo 4 launch party - Microsoft, 343 and Master Chief meet the fans

Celebs greet the arrival of the Reclaimer Trilogy

Halo 4 launched yesterday, as you might have deduced from the appearence of a 50 foot Forerunner icon in the sky over London Bridge. Meanwhile, at GAME Westfield Stratford, Master Chief took a break from his busy schedule of staring heroically off into the middle distance to sell a few copies of the game, as part of a worldwide midnight opening spanning 40 countries and over 10,000 stores.

Well, he didn't actually sell a copy of the game. As in, scan it through the till. That would have been (a) ridiculous, and (b) the first harbinger of a new and disturbing spin-off strategy. I can imagine the press release already. "Caught between the Forerunner legions and the Covenant, the UNSC must painstakingly manage its remaining resources in: Halo Wares: Master Shopping Simulator! Suitable for anybody under the age of five who has no shame."

OXM's intrepid Jon Hicks was at the scene of the crime, pointing audio equipment at people like Microsoft's Phil Spencer and 343's Kiki Wolfkill in a menacing manner. There were also a number of celebrities, including Pixie Lott and Jonathan Ross. Somebody get him out of that Warthog before he says something roguishly irreverent about it and disgraces the good name of the UNSC. Here's a video.

  1. How many of those "celebraties" do we think had actually heard of Halo before their agents sent them there? Jonathon Ross I'll believe, but some of the others?

Did Jonathan Ross voice for one of them? Or was that fake?
I reckon the boybands will have not many better things to do with their time but play Xbox and get a poor album written for them every now and then. Pixie Lott.... what does it matter when you're that pretty

  3. Why the frag does Jonathan Ross always appear to turn up to UK launches of computer games? Seriously why? Personally, I dont identify with him and doubt the demography of game buyers will give two hoots. But hark ! What about causal gamers and parents or the older gamer ? Surely J Ross's star power would attract them? Er....yes because the first thing that we associate with the Master Chief is a middle aged beardy talkshow host. Not really.

If by some divine intervention the PR department of a multinational games developer reads this (because we all know that they love to troll through comments boards and listen to unsolicited ramblings) I would like to make an open request:

    Dear Sir or Madam,

Whilst your busy marketing the next computer game/feminine hygiene product/nuclear warhead I was wondering if you could include the following at the launch party:

    Provide:

Good looking men and women in cosplay (Im trying to avoid being sexist).
Credable celebraties who are gamers or are involved with gaming.
Peter Molyneux shaped pinata so may all batter him and feast on his innards.
Bridget the Midget (a personal request there)
Complimentary nibbles from Iceland because we all know mums shop at Iceland.

    Do not Provide:

    Boy bands
Middle aged celebraties who are old enough to be my parents
    Politicians

Oh....and please Mr/Mrs PR person, please take time to play the game before you spin so that if the game is crap we can tell from the forced grin on your face.

    Yours sincerely,

    Busy body.

  4. Pretty certain jonathon ross is into gaming quite a bit. While I don't like him think that's a bit harsh.

  5. Ross is a huge and very vocal gamer and turns up to all these events for one reason; He can.

He also owns a comic shop in London, which again is pretty much what I'd do if I had that sort of money.

But agree about the attractive cosplayers, everything is better with them.

  6. Is that prick Jonathan Woss the best they could manage? :|
