[Update: Nintendo says that the U.S. version WILL come with an AC adapter. Japan is doing their own thing over there.]
The Japanese version of Nintendo Direct let the cat out of the bag, but here's the official details for the North American release of the newly announced big screen 3DS. As with the DSi, they're calling it the 3DS LL, but we're calling it the 3DS XL.
Nintendo 3DS XL is coming to North America on August 19th for $199.99, hitting shelves right alongside New Super Mario Bros. 2. But Europe gets it first, on July 28th. You know you'll want both, so start selling things or stealing.
Check out that 90% larger screen. Nuts, isn't it? The new top screen is now 4.88 inches, up from 3.5 inches on the original model. The bottom screen also gets a bump up from 3 inches to a bigger 4.18 inches.
The system itself is almost 50 percent bigger, but that means a bit more battery life, with Nintendo quoting more the 6 hours of use. But for when the juice finally runs out, you'll need to make sure to purchase an AC adapter separately, as one is not included with the system. A 4GB SD card will be included.
The system will be offered in blue/black or red/black. What about that pretty white one from Japan's announcement?
Are you going to trade in your 3DS for this big dude?

Sell sell!!!!!!!
Now we have to wait another year for THAT redesign?...
-Doesn't look compatible with circle pad pro
I'll reserve my buying decisions until Nintendo straightens their shit out and joins the rest of us in 2012.
there reasoning " We dont want to screw over 20 million owners of 3ds already"
that seems ok with me, in fact it downright makes sense
Didn't they also say they weren't planning a redesign? In fact I could have sworn it was this week, I heard a rumor about Miyamoto bullshitting "The 3DS feels complete and we aren't planning a new model"
Because they didn't add a second nub, they are only going to be screwing people who buy 3DSXLs because they won't have the option of using the circle pad pro.
Has NOBODY played Metroid Prime Hunters with the wrist strap/thumb stick that came with the original DS model?
I tried using the touch screen as a control stick in Super Mario 64 DS. I have never fully recovered from that traumatic incident.
how is adding additional features to new hardware going to screw over the existing customers? They pulled the same move by adding internet to the DS and resold all of the DS owners on DSi. If they're going to increase the size of the device, why not put in a nub?
Companies hide the truth all the time to reveal at the destined date.....jaffe did it with twisted metal. it happens all the time
You dont need an optional second nub. Nintendo, in none of there handheld redesigns ever, have changed the base design to fracture the userbase.
Personally i am more pumped for the better battery, Ive been wanting that
Fuck you.
Fuck Nintendo, glad I didn't buy a 3DS. And these colors and that design are fairly ugly.
they did that 4 years later. Not 1 1/2 years.
Yeah, I know that companies hide the truth all the time. That's why I'm confused when not a minute ago you say "They were never going to add a second nub, they said this but of course people dont listen"
Anyways, of course you don't NEED the second nub, but nintendo has changed base designs and fractured the userbase before. They added a camera to the DSi, they added the motion plus to the wii remote, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was more examples beyond off the top of my head.
I think this system is mainly for dsi upgrades, and the dsi uses the same cord.
Still weird, but not as harmful as could be...@.@
And no charger? If this is for upgraders, don't they realize that anyone selling their system will have to include a charger?
Weirdness...
Either way, I'm more pissed about no AC...
Oh well, I'll just buy the Japanese one...-_-(was probably going to anyway...^_^;)
I like the colors...
But Japan gets better ones.. check out this link:

And @ stealth
batttery life is about a 1.5 hour or so improvement. Check the above link.
NO AC ADAPTER? PLUGAGEDDON!!!!!
I will get this, but it'll be the 1st ds system that I'll wont get at launch. I'm gona be putting my monies towards the wiiU instead
Dale, I'd like to call you a weeaboo but society tells me I have to call you a Japanophile-American, so call the damn thing by its actual name. You didn't see people calling it the Nintendo Revolution after it launched, did you?
Likely the same screen res
etc.
Yeah, I'm good, Nintendo, I'm good.
