Mass Effect 4 leaves Shepard behind

BioWare Montreal producer confirms Commander Sherpard's story has come to a close; next game in role-playing game series will feature "very, very different context."

Commander Shepard is gone, but not forgotten. BioWare Montreal producer Fabrice Condominas confirmed to VG247 that Shepard's story is finished, and the captain will not be featured in Mass Effect 4, or whatever the next entry in the series is titled.

"There is one thing we are absolutely sure of--there will be no more Shepard, and the trilogy is over," Condominas said. "This is really our starting point. Now the Mass Effect universe is vast, and very, very rich. So at this point in time, we don't even know what kind of time frame we're going to be in. All we're doing is more gathering ideas from the teams, gathering feedback to see several things."

As for who may replace Shepard as the franchise's leading character, Condominas made clear that BioWare is not simply going to iterate on Shepard.

"So first, we don't want to make 'Shepard 2', or Mass Effect 4 with like, 'oh there's no more Shepard but you're a soldier in the universe'. So this will be a very, very different context for sure, and nothing has been decided on the rest," he said.

Last month alongside the departure of BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka, the company announced that a new Mass Effect game was forming at the studio. Details are non-existent on the project, but it has been confirmed that Mass Effect 3 producer Casey Hudson is attached to the game, said to be a "full" Mass Effect title.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'd love to have more information about that First Contact War. I think that would be sick!!!!!!

Alpha1Nova I don't understand, why is media obsessed with prequels. Aside from cashing on the poorly stolen story/plot. Do a search on story that came long before any of the Mass Effect games. That is a fact. I leave it to all of you to find what that game is. And you will see why it's a theft. What is the point of playing something you already know the outcome of every conflict in plot-holed end story. Timeline in this case is completely irrelevant. It's similar to what they are doing with Hobbit movie. Utter nonsense, I only ask why?! You already know how the complete Lord of the rings story ark ends. What is the point again? All conflicts can be done within the existing game. Example, stumbling upon a Prothean beacon that, I don't know teleports your spirit/mind so you can witness the events of the past. Since Protheans had the ability to sense the presence of others being in a room long before him. It could explain the existence of such technology in a game and so on,... Why make a complete game based on those events? For me personally ME1=masterpiece, ME2=some elements were improved at the expense of what made ME1 superior. All in all a very bad game except Arrival. In a long run it was completely pointless. ME3=no f*cking comment. If they decide to go "flashback mode" on a complete game, I will not touch it. Waste of time, also I know many others who feel the same. I will be glad for all of you who wish to "replay the past known outcomes", it's good for you. Me on the other hand will give them a wide berth. They could also introduce another element in game space battles or Protheans who managed to escape the Reapers. They could have done a lot with existing lore elements. And yet the chose not to. Why I don't know. I'm not the ceo of the Bioware. But, this company is a shadow of it's former self.

veryraiser So, yeah... you went on a pretty big rant there. lol. I agree with some of what you said, and respect pretty much everything else. But dude, it's not that I want a Prequel, it's that I'm interested in other things that already existed BEFORE the main storyline. Oxy-Moron, yeah I know. lol. but prequels usually tie in with the main story. Look at what happened for the trilogy. We barely needed to know information about the first contact war. I just think it would be fun to leave the trilogy's story behind and make a fresh new game... but still with the ME feel. In other words, they don't even have to include anything from the trilogy. just experiencing the First Contact War would be extremely thrilling. And I'm sure I am not the only one who feels this way.

The Mass Effect Universe is such a rich one in of itself, they don't need to go forward from the debacle of Mass Effect 3 (timeline speaking). I'd love to see something taking place during the Krogan Uprising, the rise of the Geth, Salarian STG missions.

One thing that is very important is to distance themselves from Shepard's crew, to make it seem like somembody else's story....and equally important, multiplayer is not something to be just stapled on like was done in ME3. Either have it, and make sure it's functional, and actually enriches the game, or don't. Don't half job it. (personally I hope it's not on there at all)

Petdoc1991 5 pts

For Mass effect 4 could you go to a different galaxy like Andromeda or the Triangulum thorough the use of worm holes? Or have a main character from those galaxies ( kind of like a human)? Maybe the reapers were created by people who came from one of the galaxies in order to have  intergalactic war with the other? There could be like a super reapers who uses stars for energy as one of the main antagonists for one of the games. There are really a lot of possibilities that this series can go with, im excited to see what happens.

MightyMillers 5 pts

Are they going to do something similar to halo bring out a prequel and multiplayer based game then after those two games have been done go back to Shepard for the sixth game in the series with a new enemy? lol

Alpha1Nova 5 pts

MightyMillers Jesus dude, I hope not! LOL I hate Halo. That's why I love ME so much...

MightyMillers 5 pts

Alpha1Nova LOL I don't hate Halo but I know what your sayin. I would be disappointed in the ME team if they did anything like ODST. :P

Alpha1Nova 5 pts

MightyMillers It felt like a total downgrade from the original trilogy. I liked it when I was younger, just not now. I played the first three for a long time but I hate them now. Many reasons. But let's just hope that ME sticks with the same FEEL of the original series. If they can capture the same feel and mechanics again, it will most likely be a success.

After scrolling through the comments: I have never heard so much whining in my life.  If you don't like it don't play it.  Move on.  I'm sure all your hand-wringing will make EA or whoever come to your way of thinking.

CaptWaffle 15 pts

Wow. Still complaining about the ending.  The EC was fine, move on with your lives.  The mob is gone yet you still have your "Me, too" mob mentality.  They fixed it, you can stop crying.

linkin117 6 pts

CaptWaffle Um, no. I would have agreed with you until you said that the EC 'fixed' it. It didn't. It was more of an awkward cliffhanger than a complete ending, still riddled with ambiguity and plot holes if you concentrate hard enough. It fixed some plot holes, but opened up to new ones with some others still left unanswered. Whether this was done purposely or just because of bad writing I'm still unsure.

layton2012 15 pts

Glad to hear Casey Hudson is still involved, I think the logical decision would be to take control of either a Turian or an Asari, not another boring human as that would be basically playing as Shep 2, I also think it would be beneficial to either do a prequel maybe before the first contact war, or a sequel where you could even run into Liara as a matriarch. Though a sequel could be very complicated.

Ardus 28 pts

After ME3's ending, I couldn't care less.

rochaeliseo 6 pts

Well at least now I know to buy the first two games and leave the last one out of my collection... I'll just watch the gameplay on youtube or something so I won't be disappointed with another ending...

rochaeliseo Just buy the trilogy it is SO worth it.

i wonder if in a few years time that in mass effect fan forums there will be floods of debates on who is a much better commander shepard or the new guy in a similar fashion to star trek fans and who is better captiain kirk vs captian picard type debates

Caduceus89 40 pts

Venatorcruiser What debates? Picard is clearly the superior officer and captain.

Shepard already has its place on the videogame history and it would be counter-productive trying to milk him like other characters (*cough* MARIO *cough*). Anyway, now its the time to correct mistakes and look forward.

AlexFili 20 pts

I think it's a good idea. Maybe we can have a Turian/Krogan hero, or maybe one that's had a completely different background. Definitely not a military man (or woman)

towely62 24 pts

this could be a good thing. to see how your decisions effect the rest of the galaxy would be pretty sweet and to see what other things the mass effect endless universe has to offer im glad theres a game franchise like this to just explore endless possibilities is really exciting

hash399 6 pts

'So this will be a very, very different context for sure'

I guess that means same thing with the option to play in Red, Blue or Green color.

janderdarkmoon 23 pts

Star wars, Star Trek, Mass Effect? Why not it's a wonderful universe and there's many other stories to be told in multiple mediums. Games comics, novels are all good and without Shepard we don't have to worry about a Star Wars situation with fifty novels that follow the Skywalker family line until it's been beaten into the ground.  If they want to expand the mythology, I'm all for it, just keep it fresh.  The universe has already been saved.

redluigi11 152 pts

why not just end the ME after 3 and make a new ip

ztg360 96 pts

redluigi11 For the simple fact that doing that wouldn't do justice to the universe they created, you can't tell me that you don't want to explore the deep crime syndicates of the citadel or omega, you can't tell me you don't want to look into joining a mercenary band for kicks and giggles, you can't tell me that you actually want them to just let that entire universe be put on a shelf forever with it only being kept alive through fan fiction and replays of the main 3 games.  I don't want shepard to make a comeback (at most I want him mentioned a few times but never seen) but to completely abandon that universe would be idiotic at best and business suicide at worst (they could make plenty of money of that universe still, if done properly)

TimboII 116 pts

I really enjoyed the Mass Effect series...but I'm currently fatigued by it. The last thing I want to think about is more ME right now. I hope they take a break for a few years and work on something new and original than go back to ME in the future.

canoninja 29 pts

they just had cold feet and knew that another story involving shepard could be mortal to them, more so after all the opinions on ME3 story and ending, so they took the easy path and better make another story non-related....typical...

-Jonce- 95 pts

This must be a prequel right? A true sequel, as in the game is set after Mass Effect 3, will be a complete nightmare to write for after 3 games worth of decisions to take into account.

senior892 6 pts

Well, they could always just kept the "Mass Effect" title, just like how Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest did, I haven't yet saw any game studio from the West do this, I wonder why

solidus2_1 130 pts

 senior892

Thats the way of doing it like I was thinking.

kuda001 165 pts

After thinking about it I realised that ME3 would find it hard to end on a high note.

What made the series great were the choices you made that created a personal experience. However the problem is that the choices we made created more and more complex branching storylines and alternate realities. The first two games were great because they were a lot less complicated for developers to figure out how to create and conclude the alternating storylines.

As we got to ME3 however there was so much to do that some aspects of these realities were touched upon whilst others weren't. The endings didn't help because instead of creating conclusions to the branching storylines they just bunched everything together into a few choices.

Bioware if your going to have another go you need to bear this in mind, this requires more thought and planning than you think. EA do not force upon consumers needless DLC and multiplayer just to make money  and finally NO 'Jessica Chobot' characters.

SUNDRAGONJ 43 pts

kuda001 I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing, UNLESS you can do a better job at running a game company and design games, just saying.

MooncalfReviews 567 pts

Just because they have lots of money and can hire a bunch of code monkeys, doesn't mean the people in charge know what they are doing.

SUNDRAGONJ 43 pts

MooncalfReviews I'm pretty sure you have no clue how to run a business such as they so don't complain.

MooncalfReviews 567 pts

SUNDRAGONJ I have no clue how to run a business, but I know how to make video games. That's what it comes down to, bad video game design, NOT bad business.

SUNDRAGONJ 43 pts

MooncalfReviews Well since I do not know you personally I haven't a clue whether you actually know how to design games or not. Designing games is a business though. The business end makes it possible for designers to, well DESIGN games.

MooncalfReviews 567 pts

Except, Bioware and EA seem great at making money, and not so great at making video games (anymore, since DA2 and TOR).

SUNDRAGONJ 43 pts

MooncalfReviews I'm sorry what are those games? It's not that I haven't heard of them before just I have no clue what the letters stand for lol. After I know the games then I can make a rebuttal.

kuda001 165 pts

SUNDRAGONJ My point was to take a more considered and planned approach from the very beginning if you are planning another attempt.

icebox98 9 pts

wow! thats a big step.......just hope it wont spoil my appetite for the future ME games

MooncalfReviews 567 pts

Wow, they shocked me in a good way. I was sure they'd use Shep until ME19! So glad they are moving on with the serious.

However, it does concern me that they are talking about "very, very different context." Coming from an EA-owned group that just means they are making it more like every other game that's popular, and less like the game it originally was.

-Jonce- 95 pts

MooncalfReviews Along with Dragon Age 3 that's the worry. The homogenization (I think thats a word) of 'AAA' games to "appeal to the masses" is really putting me off gaming.

Although lets not pretend EA are the only ones doing this.

I love this!!! I want more and more and more of mass effect!!!!!

vincent_tai 48 pts

Promises by game developers mean absolutely nothing.  That's what I have learned from years of gaming.  The truth is it takes a lot of guts to end on a high.  If there is money to be made, you go make it until the franchise is ruined.  In fact they have started ruining it when they made ME3 the way it was made.
