Black Ops 2 review: what do you want to know?

Xbox 360's latest Call of Duty goes under our microscope

Black Ops 2 is just over a week from release, and the intrepid menfolk of OXM are gearing up for assault on the final Xbox 360 review build. This is perhaps the most intriguing Call of Duty since the genre-defining Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, offering an RTS subgame, open world zombie blasting, a volatile class system and massively expanded e-sports functionality among other new features.

Is it the series overhaul certain, more irascible sections of the internet have been waiting for? Or is it just the same old dog wearing an exciting selection of novelty hats? We'll find out shortly, but we need your aid. Our critical faculties are as formidable and protuberant as light machineguns, but those light machineguns need ammunition. As in questions. Your questions. What do you want to hear about in our Black Ops 2 review?

  1. Can you do a focus on Zombies? That's the main reason I might buy it.

  2. look, just tell me these things:
    1) is it possible to win in zombies? that the one thing i never liked about it, it always seemed a bit depressing
    2) is Bruce Campbell in zombies mode?

  3. As somebody already said on Facebook, please be as harsh with BO2 as you were with MoH. Myself, I'd just like to know how the single player campaign holds up.

    You mean honest/critical?

I'd like to know about the AI, especially the veteran difficulty, are they grenade happy, are there bits with infinite enemies, do they have any AI at all or are they just A like every other cod.

  5. Zombies, multiplayer killstreaks, multiplayer classes, multiplayer. That'll do me!! :D

  6. Plot? Does it actually have one or is it just an excuse to string together a series of explosions and set pieces?

  7. Personally, I'd like to see a bit more on the single-player campaign. Too many people focus on the multiplayer in games and to little on the single-player aspect.

Anyway, I have high hopes for this game and could breathe new life into the series.

    :)

  8. Does it mix up any of the gameplay? MW3 was just a mission to top the last explosion and didn't have any calmer stealthy moments and was generally very shallow.

The reason MoH: Warfighter got a harsh review was because the gameplay was extremely buggy, the single-player was apparently quite boring and had a boring plot, multiplayer wasn't too interesting, etc.

I don't see the same happening for Black Ops II since the gameplay in the CoD franchise is never majorly buggy (unless you take the current state of World At War's online into account), single-player plots have always been interesting (to me anyway), multiplayer's always dragged in millions of players worldwide, Zombie mode has always been incredibly popular, Spec Ops is a lot of fun too, and the franchises pros nearly always outweigh the cons.

If people just took the WHOLE game into account and not just focus on one aspect of the game and gave the other bits of the game a chance for a while, I'm sure more people will see more positive things about CoD.

Medal Of Honour: Warfighter proved to be a letdown to most, but I'm sure Black Ops II will make the haters eat their own words upon release, although you never know...

  10. Is it good or bad and what score would you give it. Or is that too obvious?

I've missed out the last modern warfare as I just wasn't interested it in any more. Promised myself I wouldn't bother with Black Ops for the same reason but gave in eventually and actually thought it was a great story. I could be swayed by this if it's any good but I come at CoD with a very sceptical mind set for all the usual reasons "haterz" bang on about (recycling etc). I'll try and remain impartial though seeing as I enjoyed the last Black Ops

  11. Ive read somewhere that the mp has a starcraft 2 league system.I have been banging on about how good that system is for ages, hoping it would be included in the console online gaming for some time, so when i read this it got my attention straight away. With halo and hitman coming out this month i was going to give bo2 a miss ,i traded mw3 in after 1 month last year as i enjoyed and still enjoy bf3 so much more. Then i heard that they can nerf a weapon if it proves to be to powerful there and then without having to wait for a update.I would like to no if the sc2 system is included and if you think it will make the game better,as i no its one of the things which keeps me coming back for more.

  12. have treyarch (hopefully) ruined the capacity for exploiters to use quickscoping as a MP technique?
i really dont want to keep being one shotted after some 11 year old has shot me in the knee/3 feet to the left of my avatar's head.....

Having played CoD 4, WaW and MW: 2 online I am still none the wiser what quick scoping actually is and whether i've ever been effected by it or if I was doing it myself and coming across as a tit. Please, someone explain this to me

  14. Quick-scoping is when you exploit aim assist to score a one-shot-kill with a sniper rifle when zooming to scope. It lets snipers behave like they're armed with shotguns, basically.

in world at war i completed it goes up to level 200 :D

  16. Quite honestly, as a major fan of OXM, I would just like to see Call Of Duty taken out of the field of isolation many reviewers seem to give it. It amazed me that ACIII was given merely 8/10 and Dishonored 9/10, as by my standards they were honestly 10/10 Game Of The Year contenders, so I would rather not see COD get its yearly 9 score if those games are in fact better than Black Ops II. Please consider it not just as a big package but for the strength of its marketing focus, the futuristic single-player campaign, as the multiplayer/Zombie experience to me changes very little between instalments and thus should remain a constant positive point but not overriding.

Why not just say you want oxm to agree with your opinion. Maybe they'll give it a 9 because they think its a 9. Or maybe they'll give it a 9 because Activision have paid them off blah blah blah.

Also thanks for the explanation of quick scoping. Can safely say I never did it. I can't use snipers to save my life.

  18. I'd like to know if EA followed my advice and paid you to give call of duty a good score so they can claim the good score was paid for. I should run EA, I'm a genus :P

  19. We all know (or used to know) what to expect from a Call of Duty game.

All previous titles gave us a Linear but cinematic campaign, Fast paced MP and a secondary co-op or Zombies mode. What I want to know is do the 'improvements' actually improve the game? Is the campaign enhanced by the Strike Force Missions and 'choices'? Do they actually have any significant impact? do they make the campaign more replayable? Is the 'pick 10' system better? Is it better now that the Perks affect the player and attachments affect weaponry? Is it still fast paced and fun? Is zombies better than previous games? Black Ops is regarded by many as one of the better (if not best) CoD title so how does Black Ops 2 compare? Have the changes/improvements really moved the series forward?

I know there are several things here but it is not like you are reviewing a new IP and you do have past CoD games to compare and contrast with. I doubt there are many people who do not know what a Call of Duty game is. I do expect a fair and unbiased review and NOT a fan boy or fashionable haters opinion though

  20. You know what we're getting - short campaign of 4-6 hours, good MP if you like that kind of thing (prefer BF myself but not putting down COD MP - it's all just too quick for me though I seem to prefer Black Ops MP to MW MP for some reason)

What really interests me this time is the Zombie Mode. If it's good and brings something new to the standard COD Zombie modes then I will probably pick this up in the New Year as I enjoyed the single player on Black Ops last year.

But my gaming time is very limited. I haven't picked up Dishonored or AC3 which I always intended to. Only just started playing ME3 FFS. The only game I have pre-ordered now is Hitman - I think that will keep me occupied some time until the new year anyway

  21. played Dishonored and i thought it was an 8/10 game. its great, but once id finished it theres no way i could be bothered to play it through again...didnt have the replayabilty i was led to believe it had. personal opinion etc

  22. You know what we're getting - short campaign of 4-6 hours, good MP if you like that kind of thing (prefer BF myself but not putting down COD MP - it's all just too quick for me though I seem to prefer Black Ops MP to MW MP for some reason)

I have never completed any CoD game in 4-6 hours but then I don't try and get to each checkpoint as fast as possible but tend to take my time, explore a little to get the intel and not skip anything....

I also have noticed that those that prefer the slower paced BF3 (I am not knocking it) also prefer the slower paced and slower killing time of Black Ops.

  23. 1) Can I come round to your house and play it?
    2) Who let the dogs out? Who? Who?

  24. Why not just say you want oxm to agree with your opinion. Maybe they'll give it a 9 because they think its a 9. Or maybe they'll give it a 9 because Activision have paid them off blah blah blah.

To respond to that, all I was saying is that reading OXM reviews feels as if they don't compare it to past entries or other big games in the year. If they think it deserves a 9 then that's fine, I would just like to see why they think it's better/worse than similarly rated big games rather than acting as if COD lives in its own 9-shaped void every year that's virtually guaranteed. If their opinion differs to mine on COD that's absolutely fine, it's what makes this industry great, I'd just love more comparisons to other big titles.

  25. I just have one question: Will we finally be able to play the multiplayer with bots offline?

I know of so many people who bought Black Ops (thank God I didn't) thinking that they will be able to get some offline deathmatch action with the bots, only to find out that you need to be online to access the bots (which kinda defeats the purpose of having bots in the first place).

Probably not a big deal for most players, but to those of us who only play offline, it makes a world of difference.
