PlayStation 4 dev kits shipping to developers – Report

Sony is allegedly conducting briefings on the capabilities of the next PlayStation device; features and hardware were detailed.

While Sony has remained silent on the next iteration of its home console, details are beginning to emerge, with sources close to VG24/7 reporting that Sony is beginning to share its plans and specs for the PlayStation 4 with key partners.

The electronics giant is believed to be currently conducting briefing sessions with select US software developers on the capabilities of the PlayStation 4, which is being referred to only by its codename: Orbis. Some game publishers are believed to be taking delivery of an enhanced version of the console’s development kit now, with version one understood to have been little more than a graphics card. The current “modified PC” update, and January’s upcoming third refresh, is believed to be indicative of the final specs, before the unit is provided “next summer” (in the US), ahead of a predicted pre-E3 reveal of the device to the public.

Sources went on to disclose that the console will be powered by AMD’s A10 APU, a combination CPU and GPU single chip, with dev kits featuring either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, a Blu-ray optical drive, and a 256GB hard-disk drive. Ethernet, HDMI, and Wi-Fi functionality are all believed to be making the jump from the PS3 to its successor.

Sony is also reportedly briefing developers on some of its intentions for the device, with suggestions that the user interface on the next PlayStation will be overhauled, and that activating the PS button on the controller mid-game will allow users to explore any part of the system, including the PlayStation Store to buy DLC without the need to leave the active session.

While no pricing details are known, tipsters confirmed that Sony’s approach with its next console is to offer something “very affordable” but “isn’t a slouch”.

GameSpot contacted Sony Computer Entertainment, which declined to comment on the rumours.

An analyst report had predicted that both Sony and Microsoft will have their respective future-generation consoles on store shelves by the end of next year. Sony's PS4 is rumoured to boast the same graphics card as Microsoft's next Xbox.

The new PS4 and XBOX will be out at the end of 2013.

They will not be a massive change compared to the consoles of today, just a bit better graphics, blu ray player for the new xbox and for the PS4 it will have 4K TV support. They will also have a new kinect sensor with the new xbox.

anyone know any more about the new gen consoles?

Ravenlore_basic 110 pts

I for one do not see Launching a console in 2013 as a great IDEA.  There will be NOTHING NEW!!!  The games will be the same just with better graphics!!!

They need to wait a few more years till AI is a LOT better!!!

Better Voice recognition

Better Voice synthesis

Huge improvement in  physics

A game which can integrate FULLY multiple abilities.  Grand Theft Auto with  full fighting like fight night, or Cage fighting, and car physics and driving abilities like Grand Turismo, go to a park and play a full game of soccer like in PES. ....

Not limited like the game engines of today. BUT something MUCH MORE.  I DO not see this happening with ANY console coming out NEXT YEAR!!!!

I'm just glad they're finally upgrading these outdated consoles. It's a step forward at least.

I have 360 and PS3. I don't like how Sony started the PS3 journey by sailing into a storm of their own arrogance, however the console is now a success, is profitable, and has a good range of exclusive titles. I am confused by how people are mistaking this with the losses Sony have in their camera, TV, and other divisions. The 10 year life of the PS3 boasts are another piece of foolish bravado and hubris that Sony now seems to have left behind them. I'm looking forward to seeing more about this new console, along with the XB720, or whatever it is called this week.

Dominicobaggio 8 pts

@farcorners it will be a 10 year lifespan... its been out what 6 years? Then it will continue to be supported atleast another 4 hence 10 years...

torres_unix 143 pts

Dominicobaggio  farcorners Right now, seems like Wii U is starting to divert some of Sony's profit to itself.

Dominicobaggio 8 pts

@torres_unix @farcorners lol wii is a different market. Not directly in competition. Its for children like move and kinect. Sony dont need to worry.

torres_unix 143 pts

Dominicobaggio  torres_unix  farcorners Wii U is direct competition my friend, they updated the graphics, and are now supporting AAA titles, how is that not direct competition?  Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, Assassin's Creed 3 on Wii U!?  Those don't seem like titles for children.

Dominicobaggio  torres_unix  farcorners Following the flame bandwagon, Dominicobaggio?

Think of the Nintendo consoles before Wii, garnered to hardcore.

One console doesn't outline a companys vision.  The Wii only existed to compete directly with 2 Multi product divisions.  Better the idea of the Wii than end up like Sega.

Think for a second.  If you solely made video games, and 2 other companies enter the fray with TV's, DVD players, and BILL GATES to back them up, how else did you expect them to survive the gaming market..even if the Wii had hardware of PS3?

If you ask me, although my Wii collected dust, their marketing tactics to gain revenue and stay alive were of brilliance.

Now, they're coming back to us (hardcore) with rage.  Wii only happened to remain competitve against powerful companies.

Just to explain  to everyone here who seems a little confused. Ps3 made money and is a very sucessful console. Quality reliable hardware. The loss you all are thinking about is Sony as a whole which includes tvs, cameras etc. They have suffered with a slowdown and people ngoing for price over quality ie microsoft and samsung. Unfortunately modern consumers dont have much of a clue as displayed very often on here lo.

torres_unix 143 pts

Dominicobaggio It's likely that modern consumers do have a clue, hence the reason why PC is on the rise against crippled consoles like the PS3.  Sony's days as a gaming company are numbered.

Dominicobaggio 8 pts

@torres_unix. Case proven. Check sales figures, check which format gets most support. Sony are still the premier company when it comes to games and exclusives. Everyone knows it just some dont like to admit. I used to be a pc gamer but its dead now, all games are made with the big console market in mind. No longer any great sims or fps or adventure on pc. They are all simplified games for console. The only good thing pc has left is total war. Sorry to say the masses prefer consoles just like they prefer cheaper samsung tvs over quality panasonic or sony. Its life!

torres_unix 143 pts

Dominicobaggio In what world my friend!?  Sony and MS over-inflate their numbers, the rising cost of development and the lack of over-all sales will bring the industry down.  When you produce 10 titles and only 1 sells millions while the others tank, that doesn't sound like success to me.  What you will see is much more lack of variety vs true innovation, which will pose an opportunity for the rise of PC gaming with independent developers leading the pack.

Renegade__angel 26 pts

torres_unix  Dominicobaggio The PC platform succeeds in the multi platform single player games side of things, but it will not be the "best" choice of gaming until it has an online service with the quality of LIVE and the amazing exclusives the PS3 has. All platforms have their own perks, PS3, 360 and PC all have something they're better at. It's all about picking the platforms that best suit your needs which is why I buy exclusives for my PS3 and anything multi platform I but a PC copy of the game. And I am very happy with MY choice of how to approach my gaming and it's served me well all these years.

What Sony should do is make the PS 4 a tablet console. It is tablet in all shape and form but it has console guts. It's the only way they can compete with the tablet market. The PS4 tablet console has control options- touch screen, virtual control and the main controller - the famous PlayStation controller. Its got rear and front facing cams, its got tv connection, of course wi fi and all those things. But what would make it different from the ordinary tablets is that it has a cartridge slot for AAA games.

shadowedkiss 5 pts

What if Sony just drop out of the race altogether - strap the PS4 and release nothing. Discontinue all games  and focus on something that is actually profitable. Everyone can enjoy more Halo & Battlefield 3 also ports of Wii U and Kinect. Sounds like fun? Why invest in a failing business to begin with? Sony loses more then they profit from. Invested more then they gain. Since they have a love for expensive technolgy - why not be the Ferrari of tech and just dish the gaming industry altogether and make tech only for the rich who can afford it. Gaming console is something Nintendo caters to - and actually works. PC caters to those who can afford the rich experience. Sony neither off Pc GAMERs the power they want nor do they profit when they do. Sony gaming industry is it not a failing busness? It's already outdated Lets just call it quits. PC gamers can look forward to Wii U comparisons. Who needs more Grand Turismo, God of War, Uncharted, Last of US, Two Souls, Kart and AllstarsWont we all be better for it without Sony? Let it die like Dreamcast - and let us look forward to more Halo and Mario. Lets us enjoy Battlefield 3  50 with awful single player in full hd and 60fps with DX60. This is gaming! Im bored of it already. I experience the best graphics and I walk away from it with a void. I remember when Mario 64 meant something. I remember when I didnt know what jaggies was. I remember when resolution didnt matter. I remember when games was so flawed yet i enjoy  them. What has graphics, tech and gaming done to the pure pleasure of enjoying a game for a game. I no longer can enjoy a game now lest it has realistic animation and visuals and yet i am still discontent. It'll never be realistic enough. It all will never be good enough.  And yet the very tech has put game companies out of businesss and cost many people their jobs. A self-fish hobby and yet I still love it. Looking forward to PS4.

PC people.  Please stop bashing hardware.  PC hardware will ALWAYS be better then console.  But you know what?  PC has to run ten million things besides your game!  A console is DEDICATED.  Let me say that again DEDICATED hardware.  WIll always be better then a loose OS.....SO deal with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!8 gigs of ram on a console is like 32 on a PC

alrepairs 307 pts

Godly_Kongming

PC people (Well Me) isn't bashing hardware.

You said 8 gigs of ram on a console is like 32 gigs on a PC.  Let me make a point clear.

JUST LIKE you don't need 32 gigs of ram on PC, you don't need 8 gigs of ram on Console LOL.  It's pointless resource that could be invested in say, a more powerful GPU for the PS4?  These aren't company servers, they're GAMING CONSOLES!

I don't care either way.  My point is that Sony need not go the route of PS3 and make an overly beast console, or else they'll lose more money.  If that happens and they fade to black (already seeing red), it'll be both the gamer's fault for demanding such pointless resources, as well as the manufacturer for listening to such idiots.

You want the company to succeed, stop demanding so much from them.

The CPU & GPU are allegedly on the same chip which is possibly why the the RAM is so high. It's allegedly a much more powerful GPU.

alrepairs 307 pts

rschrake86

Allow me to shed some light.

Although the A10 CPU chip has an HD GPU built in, it's abysmally weak, meaning  (Just like MY gaming PC CPU at home), you need an external graphics card to handle heavy loaded graphics processing.

The A10 GPU alone is capable of current gen image rendering, but not at any playable speed, running literally at 1 frame per second (Similar to a Microsoft Powerpoint Slideshow).  Check this link out which is about to support what i'm conveying.

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/2047/5/

Now look at the Grey Blue bar, labeled Graphics in those charts for a 3dmark 2011's Next Gen demo test.  Now, my score at home is 7,000, Which makes the benchmark run at playable speeds, at slightly over 30 frames per second (98% of PS3 and 360 games run, to become playable).   The A10 processor alone is showing a score of...less than 1,000?!?

Hopefully you get the picture.  The Ram is costing them more, because they won't be able to render medium to high end graphics with that A10 processor alone, meaning they're also investing in an external GPU as well,  which hasn't yet leaked to the public.

Sorry for such a long explanation, lol.   Overall, 8 or 16 gigabytes of RAM is pointless....COMPLETELY pointless :(.

torres_unix 143 pts

rschrake86 That makes sense, the GPU still needs a high amount of ram to maintain all of the geometry information that it needs to render.

torres_unix 143 pts

alrepairs  Godly_Kongming PC people! LOL, RAM on consoles has always been a necesity but never a hindrance, it's mostly used to store variables since the hardware does most of the mathematical operations needed for the complex rendering.  Microsoft and Sony are essentially selling you dumbed-down PCs.

alrepairs 307 pts

 torres_unix  alrepairs  Godly_Kongming Exactly.

If you ask me, dumb down the RAM to 4 GB as people also agree that Console OS's don't use resources like Windows Vista / 7, and invest the remainder of cash toward a good separate GPU to make a powerful, yet affordable console for the next 10 years.  8 GB of RAM is utterly wasteful, useless on a console, even if PS4 had the option to boot up Windows 7 it'd still be useless LOL.

If people want power, know what kind of power is beneficial to them and yourselves.

The APUs are very weak... its so sad that Sony is going for cheap hardware for this coming gen... and all you haters and hacker lovers can now gloat like happy piggies cause next gen is going to suck.

mlcarter815 551 pts

@GodGundamNT1 They can't afford to take losses for a few years like they did with the PS3.

ziggyww 28 pts

mlcarter815  GodGundamNT1 Also everything I'm reading in rumors are saying that it is based of the APU which means the GPU and CPU are on the same chip to reduce data transfer times and give a increase of performance then if the two would set up like normal.  For all we know it could be based of the APU but with a better CPU and a modded graphics card and as its ment to have two GPU's in it set in crossfire I think it is going to be alot more powerful then people seem to think after reading this.

The only one who knows is Sony and you just going to have to wait/ Either way though I bet when it is shown it will still impress people anyway so whats the worry all about?

alrepairs 307 pts

GodGundamNT1 It's not going to suck.

You have no idea how next gen graphics will look, unless you have a high end PC...so how can you judge?

The next gen era will be fine, without power abuse.

Hardizla 12 pts

you are worrying about ps4 hardware, lol.... really guys one big lol.... we shouldnt doubt in our Japannesse friends, i dont know for you, but im enjoying playstation systems all over from 96 , and i have never been disapointed... AH i REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME WHEN I BOUGHT PS2 SYSTEM , i was so fascinated with graphics back then, and that same thing happend when i bought ps3, and so on. and the fact that the sony is going to plan the 4k output, and you are talking here about weak gpu... PS4 IS GOING TO BE THE BEAST.one advice for sony: DONT BE GREEDY!!!

Dark_Arcitekt 212 pts

Hardizla I think the question is here. Will it be a nightmare to develop on, hardware wise? Many developers were having issues developing for the ps3. Let's hope the same thing does not happen again.

ziggyww 28 pts

Dark_Arcitekt  Hardizla But alot of those issues have been sorted now and the new PS4 is meant to have a more conventional CPU that will be easy to develop on the the OPENGL code has had massive improvements over the course of this gen in prep for next gen so it should be alright.

I think its going to be a beast. the one thing I'am worried about is the 4K having a screen that is showing 4X more pixels is going to require more power and quite alot. Sony has already shown of a modded version of GT5 running in 4K with the use of 4 PS3 but if the console is 8 to 10 times more powerful half of that is going to be used up in producing the same level of graphics at the higher resolution, which is why alot of people are saying the gap wont be as big this time round.

Still better graphics would be nice and we are going to get that just dont expect the jump from the PS2 to the PS3. I'm more interested in the amount of RAM I'm hoping for as much as possible for alot better physics gameplay and damage like brick to brick etc other then the smoke and mirrors that is still very popular with this gen like battlefield 3

torres_unix 143 pts

Dark_Arcitekt  Hardizla The difficulty in programming the PS3 was having to spread your code over multiple cores manually, if sony had created an in-hardware scheduling system that spread the code accordingly with a simple interrupt call then the developers wouldn't have had such a hard time with it.  Still, with so many damn cores, the quality was still on-par (and sometimes below) Xbox360.

okassar 341 pts

They're purposely leaking the APU name to fool people. There will be a dedicated graphics card, and they haven't leaked that model. It's all to make for a grand surprise to both us and gaming media when they finally show the true capabilities of the console in works. The next generation will be a huge leap with MS and Sony, don't worry.

ziggyww 28 pts

okassar I have heard its going to use the APU to have the better increase in data transfer between the CPU and the GPU and also make it possible to offload some of the processing from the CPU to the GPU but attach another dedicated GPU to the other and have a crossfire set up which will be mental for a console the first one to have two graphics cards in it. and as the Xbox 720 is rumored to have the same GPU more or less but just having the one this could be very interesting don't ya think?

torres_unix 143 pts

ziggyww  okassar They could use ARM for the processor if they wanted to, it's a low-power, high-performance processor, the real kicker is the GPU.

okassar 341 pts

torres_unix  ziggyww  okassar ARM is way too weak. Its strength is in efficiency and low power consumption. Our game systems don't run on battery, so I wouldn't want ARM. Intel and AMD tend to shoot straight for pure computing power.

torres_unix 143 pts

okassar  ziggyww It's only a matter of time until tablets start rendering current-gen graphics.  The 3DS runs on ARM with decent results, and Intel and AMD don't necessarily hit for "pure computing power", the CPU does almost nothing when it comes to graphics, if you don't believe me, try running current-gen graphics with software-rendering.  With powerhouses like Apple constantly pushing the envelope, expect future consoles post PS4 to be tablet-based.

tgwolf 148 pts

...Not like it matters, the price on the PS3 isn't going to budge, either for games or the console, so they can take their time...that seems to be their policy for price breaks.

torres_unix 143 pts

tgwolf New price point for games $79.99, $150 for collector editions.  Forget about getting that used, it's "single use" only.

some comments speculating PS 4 is gonna be "weak"

.

the article is not complete, better sites have a more indepth analysis and more info

APU = CPU-GPU fusion

PLUS a separate GPU. So it's a crossfire system.

.

it's gonna be powerful enough (several times over PS 3) and for LESS money. considering the efficient optimization process when developing software for standardized hardware, home gaming systems will still capture the most dev attention.

a PS system usually peaks at 3rd, 4th year graphically

_____________________________________________________

"For starters, you have an AMD Fusion type design, and the recently launched but underwhelming Bulldozer, coupled with a GCN/Southern Islands/HD7000 series core is a good start. If you look at the Bulldozer architecture, it does have some really creepy high level similarities to Cell, doesn?t it? SemiAccurate?s sources won?t spill the beans on the exact generation of CPU and GPU that are in the PS4, but we expect it to be a very customized version of an existing or near future design.

So far, so ?meh?, but Sony isn?t stopping there, and this is what we didn?t want to believe for so long, Sony is going stacking crazy. The leaks all say that there are multiple additions to the core CPU/GPU chip, and they are not on the same die. Actually, given the steady stream of hints surrounding stacking coming from our Japanese speaking moles, the CPU and GPU could very well be on separate, or even stacked dies too. If you look at console economics, the idea is to make a really big and expensive chip that pushes the bounds of manufacturability. You could make two much less expensive chips that don?t push the boundaries nearly as hard, and end up faster than a single chip competitor like Oban."

ziggyww 28 pts

Dragdar I agree with you 100% people see APU so then they end up thinking of the A10 and using that as their example and saying that its weak instead of knowing that a APU is having a CPU and GPU on the one chip to increase better data transfer times and to be able to offload some of the CPU tasks to the GPU for better multitasking.

I have two heard that it will have another GPU attached to it in a crossfire stat.

s4dn3s5 202 pts

APU-> crap

gpu integrated with the cpu  have to be LOW range to to fit in size and to prevent overheating, even if it's 28nm (oh wait, it's AMD so it's 32nm at its best).

You'll find APUs on netbooks and very low entry level notebook, guess why

That's really a major disappointment

ziggyww 28 pts

s4dn3s5 a APU is the idea of GPU and CPU being on the same chip to increase better transfer rates and increase better multitasking. we have heard nothing about the actural CPU and GPU that it is going to using just that its set up in APU. so keey your wig on

s4dn3s5 202 pts
