Brutes
Hold up, buddy.
The Brute is a class of enemy returning from the Ezio Trilogy games. A much larger and heavily armored man, the Brute trades speed for raw, often unblockable power wielded from their mighty axes. Unlike Ezio Auditore, Connor Kenway is able to block and go head-to-head with Brutes in open combat.
In the fight, Brutes wield their woodcutter axes. The Axe swings and slams are slow and telegraphed from a mile away, but if they successfully land they are devastating. When the red attack notification appears over the Brutes head, they can be countered, but like the Regular Captains they are immune to counter kills and throws until they are significantly weakened. When a yellow attack notification appears over the Brute's head, the attack can not be countered, but using the counter button will allow Connor to roll out of the way, often causing the attack to hit the Brute's allies by mistake. If Connor tries to attack from a distance, The Brute also has a musket that it can fall back on, and can pick up additional firearms from fallen allies. He can stab and slash with the bayonet or fire, forcing Connor to take a human shield or dodge out of way.
The best way to deal with a Brute head on is to disarm them of their melee weapon and quickly work to take them down before they can draw a new weapon from the ground or draw their muskets. Using contextual environment kills like slamming them into walls, knocking them into water and kicking them through fences makes short and efficient work of them, but firearms and instant kill techniques like Assassinations and Rope Dart traps are still a viable tactic, and highly recommended, before open combat begins.
