Aussie game charts: February 23-March 1

By James Kozanecki

Halo Wars grabs top spot despite fierce competition from Killzone 2.

Last week's sales charts were always going to be interesting, with Sony's Killzone 2 going head-to-head against Microsoft's Halo Wars. But who won? Despite receiving a tepid response from critics, Halo Wars managed to take the lead and claim the throne in the overall Australian game charts, according to GfK Australia. Meanwhile, Sony's flagship PlayStation 3 game Killzone 2 came in at number two. Sony had a specific Killzone 2/PlayStation 3 bundle available last week, but copies of games sold in bundles don't count towards the overall charts, according to GfK Australia. On the other hand, Halo Wars was given as a promotional game for people who bought a 360 at retail stores and was therefore allowed to be counted in overall sales figures.

The third place goes to Wii Fit for the week of February 23-March 1. Despite not making it to the top, PS3 fans can rejoice in the knowledge that Street Fighter IV for the PlayStation 3 continues to outsell the Xbox 360 version, taking out the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Mario Kart Wii dropped down one place from the previous week, finding itself in sixth position. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II continues to sell strong during its second week of sales, taking out the seventh place. In an impressive feat, Sega managed to clean up the remaining three spots in the charts with Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (SMDUC) on the PS3 in eighth, House of the Dead: Overkill in ninth, and the Xbox 360 version of SMDUC in 10th place.

Halo Wars does not deserve to be #1 on the charts, the game is basicly a handjob to the fan boys. However, having played it I will say that it does at least deserve a 7.5 - 8.0 score because it is the most fluid contol system for a consol RTS I have ever had the experience of playing. Once this game's price lowers (if it ever does) I recomend you at least try it (or rent it) to get a feel for the control scheme because I honestly think thats how consol RTS's should be done. (yea Ensemble Studios! wait your dead? NOOOOOO!)

LAWLAWLAWL....Halo wars is only there because all the bloodthirsty fan boys bought it....in a couple of weeks it will be forgotten by everyone except those dang fanboys!

The_Third_Place 5 pts

a 6.5 is what it deserves. I love how just because it has Halo in the title everybody buys it. Pathetic

Fierce competition in those charts, maybe we can add Empire:Total War to Num 1. I'll be expecting it in those charts next week.

Halo wars = Halo bores The Lost and Damned FOR XBOX 360!! is way way better than any of the full priced games (except sfiv ofcourse) and the Lost is only $30. Best 360 gaming bargain since the Orange Box. PS3=Jealous 4 the LOST! LOL

And also, "tepid" response? An 82 metacritic score, 9/10 from Game Informer and GameSpy, and an 8.4 from IGN? Tepid? GS has the lowest score for this game that I have seen, and it really doesn't deserve it. Halo Wars is the best console RTS I have ever seen. Ensemble has truly put together the first real console RTS, and it should be commended.

I don't trust reviews from GS anymore. 6.5, really? Only a 9 for BioShock? And you gave LOTR: Conquest, which was a terrible game, the same score as Halo Wars? Stop reviewing games and go play your beloved Killzone on the PS3. We can tell where the bias is.

so much game reviewers i guess the from now on i will wait until the sale charts to come to see how a game is...

Jellocube 5 pts

Even as a 360 fan, i believe Killzone should have beaten Halo in the charts... its just a better game; Halo Wars is a bland cash-in from Microsoft (who killed off a studio to make that game). Would have also liked to see house of the dead higher on the charts, but yeah...

Having played Halo Wars i can't understand why Fanboys continue to whinge about the score GS gave it. I admit that it should have got higher but not much. 7.5 imo. Fanboys just need to except that compared to RTS juggernauts like starcraft, C & C or the total war series that Halo Wars is a very plain RTS with not much depth. And before the Fanboys start the onslaught of comments, i have been playing games for longer than some of you have been alive so i know what i'm talking about.

Inconnux 5 pts

GS gave it a 6.5 because the people doing the review didn't like it. It is not some corporate conspiracy against the 360. Much like I have read good and bad reviews of KZ2... a lot of complaints is because of the controls being overly difficult. We all have to remember that reviews are really glorified opinions and should be taken as such.

Gamespot gave Halo Wars a pathetic 6.5!! and it still toped its charts had a very sucessful game marathon and has an AVERAGE of 8/10 with some sites giving it much higher than that and like 20 sites gave it an 8+ so i dont think giving 6.5 to such a game is fair! and gamespot is the only site to give it such a rating!

hector530 875 pts

"Then that practically proves that GS is biased." gamespot always shows games chats, how the hell is this bias? also didnt halo wars get like a 7 on gamespot. so much for being bias.

gameOwl45 5 pts

Then that practically proves that GS is biased.

Lord-Rasay 5 pts

and if it sucked like gamespot rated it then how come it beat killzone 2 which was given a 9 and was very anticipated so it has its fanboys already! and gamespot criticized the multiplayer and then i sign to xbox live to find a game marathon and it being a very popular game! plus it even had first place on gamespot's most popular charts. Gamespot: Not being so truthful anymore.

Lord-Rasay 5 pts

@andrew ribbons You are so right! all other websites have given Halo Wars a good review, IGN gave it 8.4/10 then how come all the websites are diffrent then gamespot? theres something fishy goin there!

andrew_ribbons 59 pts

"Despite receiving a tepid response from critics, Halo Wars managed to take the lead and claim the throne in the overall Australian game charts" Or just Gamespot. Average review score from across the board was 82%. That's hardly tepid. 72% would be tepid. This game got 9/10 for OXM-UK, that's confirmation enough from me that the game is good. GS has no credibility any more.

Wow that's a surprise - would have expected SF4 to have taken top spots...

TurambarGS 88 pts

I'm going to wait for Halo Wars to drop into the bargain bin before I pick it up. I will pick it up eventually though.

jasopan 9 pts

Um it say's KZ2 bundled with the PS3 wasn't included... If we added those figures in.... Besides KZ2 has outsold Halo Wars outside of Australia

gameking5000 33 pts

Killzone 2 number 2 and Halo Wars number 1 just shows what can happen with a little advertising.

halo_wars86 5 pts

Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection cost 29.99 NOT "over 50$"

bennae66 5 pts
