  • Summary: In The Pirates! Band of Misfits, the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side, and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist, but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure! (Columbia Pictures) Expand

The movie is a curiosity cabinet of visual pleasures but so breezy and lightly funny that you may not realize at first how good it is.

May be far more ragtag than swashbuckling, but the film is sure-footed, witty and zany fun.

The claymation visuals are charming, and an enthusiastic, if somewhat underused, cast works hard to sell the better jokes (though the funniest gag is a silent monkey butler).

  1. The 3D is worthwhile; you get your money's worth for the glasses. The stop motion animation is overall very smooth, and the film is chock full of sight gags and verbal humor. What makes The Pirates on par with Pixar films is that it's just as much fun for adults as it is for kids. The humor is often sly, and may sail over the heads of children, but there's also cartoony sight gags the kids will enjoy. Full review on my blog. Expand
  2. Being a fan of Wallace and Gromit and all the other Aardman films I was really looking forward to this. I wish I could rate it higher than a 5 but it simply was not funny enough. The film made me smile here and there but I never laughed out loud until a song came on about crying that was very funny. A very Monty Python moment. I never heard one laugh from the theater audience I saw this with, and some of the kids were bored and making noises. I was especially disappointed at the storyline. In the past their films have been very original (a Were-Rabbit, and a chicken escaping a farm? BRILLIANT). This time the story was like a cliched fairy tale you've seen a million times. Still, it could have been saved if the writing was sharper. The animation, of course, was outstanding. Hopefully they will come up with a better story next time. Expand
  3. Just to begin on a lighter note, the map travel animations were mildly amusing, at best. With that behind us, take away Peter Pan’s charm, skill, wit and morals, give him a “luxurious” beard, place him and his merry men a pirate ship and you’ve got Sony Pictures Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits. A voice cast comprised of B-list English actors with a dash of Salma Hayek offers little to no conflict and even less humor. Untested writer Gideon Defoe displays little promise with no romantic interest or redeemable moral themes. This lack of storytelling pours hefty portions of salt on the wounds that are the untouched holes in character development i.e. random cross-dressing female pirate with huge crush on Pirate Captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) or the obvious hints at Pirate Captain’s great shanty’s, but not a single note whistled by him or his crew. The “Great” Pirate Captain tries to prove himself to the pirating world, end up partnering with a virgin nerd Charles Darwin, (voiced by David Tennant) who is or isn’t the villain desperate to get laid is neither convincing, educated, or funny. The children with the misfortune to view it, will have more than one reason to fall asleep from boring “Wallace and Gromit” claymation to the boring settings and humdrum musical scores. The main take-away from the film is the complete overuse of the word “booty”, which ironically is exactly what the movie was. Prophecy self-fulfilled. Expand
