"To ask why we fight, is to ask why the leaves fall” Mists of Pandaria is a brand new segment in World of Warcrafts ever expanding universe. It wasn't that long ago when our characters were taking up arms against the Burning legion and the undead army's of Arthas. At this point you might be asking yourself “What's next?” Who is the next big bad we have to take down? What is the threat to Azeroth now? And more importantly, why is there a bunch of Panda's running around? Now, now - you probably have noticed the bad review scores in the review section; people complaining about the direction of the game - and to be honest, yeah you will probably find some of the concerns to be justified. Another talent revamp? Was this really needed? Why is it every expansion we must be forced to relearn our respective classes? These are legitimate concerns, but coming off of cataclysm it is apparent that this game needed some major changes. People will complain and cry about what they view as Blizzard “oversimplifying the game” but if these people were to take a look at the actual changes being made they would see that this isn't entirely the case. First we will start with the new talent system; why has this been changed now for past two expansions in a row? Blizzard has attempted to get rid of the basic cookie cutter builds where people would literally just google their talent spec - fill in the points required - and move on. What Blizzard has done here is try to make all the talents relevant in some way or another to the overall gameplay; they want the player to be making the hard decisions while not having somebody else do it for them. Have they been successful? Not entirely; you will still see players arguing over which is the best “build” but for the most part you now have the option to pick what best suits your play style and move on. This is not “oversimplifying” the game, if anything this is adding more player choice to the game. It also means that not every rogue, warrior and hunter you see will be the same, and quite frankly - this is a good thing. Another change Blizzard has made is to the skill system. Before you would be forced to travel back to your class trainer every few levels to pick up some new abilities. Now as you level new skills are learned automatically, and while you could argue "LLYNCES! This is oversimplifying, do you not know what oversimplifying is?" My response would clearly be - of course. But this takes away from the tedious gameplay and makes more sense from a lore perspective as well, I mean, what seems more likely? Having to pay a class trainer to teach you new skills? Or learning these new skills as your character progresses? This leads me back to the talent system; the overall complaints you will hear against the talent system overhaul are “Now I don’t get a point every level so leveling now feels dull” and yet the changes to the skill system ensure that you are getting something new every few levels. The “carrot on a stick” approach is still here, it just isn't as noticeable as it was before. Mists of Pandaria has brought back a lot of those old feelings I used to have when playing through BC and WOTLK. In some ways the game is even better, so do yourself a favour and ignore those people who never even bought the game and are giving it negative reviews to promote the current MMO they are playing and go out and buy this expansion. Even if you only get one month out of the game, you will not regret seeing what new things have been brought to the world of Azeroth. Read More »
