Microsoft 'testing' its own smartphone?

Technology giant reportedly working with component suppliers in Asia to enter smartphone race against Apple; device to boast 4 or 5 inch screen.

Microsoft is setting the groundwork to enter the smartphone race against rival Apple. That's according to Wall Street Journal sources, who said Microsoft is currently working with Asian component suppliers to "test" its own smartphone.

The move suggests Microsoft is looking to embrace the business model used by Apple, namely that the Mac and iPhone maker designs its own hardware as well as the software behind them.

The sources said Microsoft is only testing a smartphone design, and the company is not sure if a final product will ever enter mass production. The device is rumored to feature a screen that measures between four and five inches. This puts it in line with the iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S III.

Microsoft just recently began selling its first company-produced PC product, the Surface tablet. The new device went on sale last week beginning at $500.

the more the merrier, im sick of apple products and wont buy a ipad or iphone for many reasons, but prime amongst them is the gouging price and rushing of tech for incramental upgrades at astronomical prices, itunes is utterly cumbersome and convoluted... not to mention the vile business practices, recent of which is suing samsung for geometrical shape, trying to limit competition is a detriment to all consumers...and the ongoing use of suicidal labor, but thats a sin they share with most of the capitalistic manufacturers and corps in america

I couldn't see MS producing better hardware than Nokia (Lumia) or even Samsung (ATIV), buh then again they did surprise me with the surface . . .

Nokia should've known better what ???business ?partner ?they chose. I still don't understand why they are still so reluctant in releasing an Android Phone, but still have a lot of respect for them. I still have my first phone a Nokia 3310 that still works in perfect condition even after this many years.

I hope things will work  fine for them, ?although I'm not such a huge fan of MS and W8.

They've explained this. Nokia designers had a meeting with MS designers and they came to realize that they had a similar vision towards smartphones. Neither one was happy with Android so with their combinerd strength they created a new ecosystem. One that I joined last year (and haven't regretted). The new nokia smartphones have incredible build quality and Windows Phone is a great and original OS.

Nokia could have joined Android but apart from not being a fan of its design, they also didn't want to be one of the many Android makers. Look at the market right now, only Samsung is succesful. Sony, Asus, Acer and so many others have almost no marketshare. Even the no.2, HTC, is losing ground. Android wouldn't have saved Nokia, and considering how great the Lumia serie is, I think they made the right move.

Ravenlore_basic 110 pts

b10nutz Yes Nokia should have known better.  Microsoft will screw over anyone they can.  Still Microsoft is late to the party they will fail.   Lets just sit back and watch it happen.

I hope MS considers making three types of phones. One for gamers like the Xperia Play but with Xbox Live connectivity, one with a full qwerty like a BlackBerry Bold and one solid screen phone like iPhone and every other android phone. If they appeal to each of these consumers they'll sell a lot of phones.

What the market doesn't need is another solid screen phone like the iPhone and every other android phone.

Valen_Ca 125 pts

Got to feel bad for Nokia if this turns out to be true.

yeah, is it just me or is the iphone 4s super slow with the new IOS. The new IOS isn't so much an "upgrade" as a healthy reminder that my less than year old $500 phone is now obsolete.

Ravenlore_basic 110 pts

dudnaito  okassar And how will Microsoft make things better??  Microsoft charged full price for windows 7 which was Vita 2.0. If they can charge you for anything they will.

Thanks for the lesson on how corporations work. I'm not so much rooting FOR a side as I hope any other company can make a breakthrough in the vaunted "middle-upper class market" that Apple has. Competition drives down prices and increases innovation brah.

Never say never, at first I didnt like it either. But in person they look so much better. I had the opportunity to try one out and it just works better and easier than Android. Hopefully you'll get the chance to try it out , approach it with an openmind (dont expect traditional Windows or Android) and it might suprise youl.

"This puts it in line with the iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S III."

Yeah, and it also puts it in line with every other smartphone made as well. Nowadays every smartphone has a screen size between 4-5 inches.

If WP8 had hardware equivalent to what Android offers (quad-core LTE, over-clocked dual-core LTE, 2GB's of RAM, better screen resolutions and more useful features.) I would seriously consider switching. The WP8 operating system is much more stable, smooth and more cohesive than Android is. It has alot less glitches and bugs. The app store will eventually come around. 120,000 apps is still nothing to sneeze at, plus MS monitors their app store better than Google with regard to malware.

I have always had, and still HAVE, Samsung Galaxy S phones. And while Samsungs flagship line of phones come packed to the brim with powerful hardware and features, the phones are made like shit.  They are cheap garbage. I have owned the Galaxy S 1, 2 & 3 and have had numerous issues with each phone that required warranty service. The WP's have a much better quality about them. So I can't wait to see how WP8 evolves in the future, and just maybe I'll give it a shot.

What is the main point of getting a Windows 8,(or Windows 9,10,11)  phone over an Android or iOS phone?

I can only think that it's better for business use, as it would be compliant with MS Office. That would be of interest to me for a tablet, and I can see myself buying a Windows 8 tablet with which I'll use MS Office - so I can use the tablet for both business and personal use. Without the MS Office I'd have to consider a tablet a bit of a toy that i'll probably get bored of quickly.

But I'm not sure if using MS Office on a phone would be productive. I havent even bothered setting up email on my smartphone cos I just can't be hassled with it.

StarSfrife 22 pts

davedrastic Personally I think the Windows 8 UI is just a lot better than Android and iOS; plus the Windows 8 phone development environment is different. There's also the Xbox and windows 8 OS compatibility.

I've used both iOS and Android Jelly bean.  I found iOS prohibitive and Android clunky.

After owning a windows phone for 2 years, the 8x seems like a good phone but i really am thinking of getting a iphone or s3. No Apps and im not waiting any longer.

StarSfrife 22 pts

I would totally buy a Windows 8 phone from MS. Well.... as long as it doesn't only come to AT&T.;

What the hell? How is this news? They have been doing so ever since WP7 came out and made a partnership with Nokia. WP8 is just strengthening that brand, yes - they are competing against apple in the smart phone business and they are slowly proceeding though its a long way to catch up. They are doing some good stuff with it (like bringing WP8 to the NT core framework) but yes, they have to catch up. Give them some credit, apple has been doing it since their first (overpriced) phone and have changed little since then.

Scisor50 14 pts

And at a low, low price of $800!! Also, if you preorder the phone now, you'll get a nifty, cheap ass phone cover!

Spartan_418 1146 pts

dark_rising76 On-contract, even the most powerful flagship smartphone is never more than $250, maybe $300, and that's pushing it, $200 is the typical price ceiling. There's no way Microsoft could hope to compete with Android and iOS if they launched a phone at that price.

dman123_1 15 pts

Spartan_418  dark_rising76 yep, even a non contract phone isn't that much unless it is one of those 64 gig iphones, but with an SD card slot, you wouldn't need to buy a phone with that much memory

I jumped onto windows 8 on day one just happy for a bit of a design change but to my surprise its much faster and the tiles are much better to use eventualy... only thing was it needed a bit of tweaking at the beginning....Anyhow im deff getting the win 8 phone GOODBYE APPLE

If Microsoft is willing to let people use what they want to use without much of a hassle rather than subjugate everyone to Microsoft products and services(Bing being highly irritating), then its got a fair chance.

Decessus 174 pts

jinzo9988 This is what I was thinking when I first read the article. I think they can capitalize on some of the irritation some users have towards Apple's app policy.

Bangerman15 101 pts

Kind of sucks since this probably won't be out till at least sometime mid next year and wp8 is coming out this month.  Would definitely like to see how innovative they can make their own smartphone.  Just look at what they did with the Surface.. that tablet has some pretty unique ideas and that vapormag casing make it a pretty top notch device.  Shows you that Microsoft can be creative in their R&D; department. ;)
