Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Review

One of the greatest games of recent years makes its way to the PC with Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

The Video Review

Death is just a setback in this video review for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

The Good

  • A captivating world that's thrilling to explore
  • Challenging and exhilarating combat
  • Incredible enemies and bosses
  • Fleeting interactions with other players make for memorable and meaningful multiplayer
  • Some great new content for this release.

The Bad

  • New player-vs-player arena is disappointing
  • Some PC-specific technical issues.

Last year, Dark Souls was released on consoles. A towering achievement, its treacherous, interconnected realms offered some of the most absorbing exploration a game has ever conjured, and its intense and grueling combat made victory against even the most common enemies a source of gratification and relief. Now, this masterpiece has made its way to PC as the aptly titled Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. This version adds a few new areas, improves on the console versions in one sense, and falls a bit short of its console counterparts in another. But ultimately, this is the same incredible game that was released on consoles, and if you didn't have the option to play it then, you definitely shouldn't let this opportunity go unseized.

The sanctuary guardian welcomes you to Prepare to Die's new content, but this fight is nothing compared to those that come later.

You are undead, struggling to fight your way through the realms of Lordran on a quest whose final purpose is anything but clear. Where many games burden you with plot and background lore, Dark Souls lets the places you go tell their own kind of story, one lost in time and shrouded in mystery. The stone ruins at Firelink Shrine, the overrun town known as the Undead Burg, the vast marble halls of Anor Londo--these all speak of a once-prosperous realm rich with history, and rather than spelling it out in detail, Dark Souls lets you wonder about what has dragged this land into its current state of miserable disrepair. Item descriptions and brief conversations with non-player characters occasionally illuminate the smallest aspects of Lordran's past, and over time, you may piece together a reasonably fleshed-out picture of the crisis that has befallen the land. But you needn't concern yourself with these details if they don't interest you. The wondrous realms of Lordran are sure to seduce you whether you care to know their history or not.

Darkroot Garden is so oppressively green that you can almost feel the air get warm and muggy around you. Running along the surreal shores of Ash Lake is like stepping into a dream. Locations like Anor Londo and the duke's archives fuse faded opulence with grand machinery in a way that's reminiscent of locations in the classic adventure game Myst, and like the realms of that game, these places have a way of staying in your head even when you're not playing. Terrific sound design is a huge factor in Dark Souls' ability to pull you in. Your steps echo convincingly in vast chambers. A heavy suit of armor clangs with every step you take. The strange noises a feared creature makes may send shivers up your spine before you even lay eyes on it.

From almost your earliest steps in this dangerous world, you're beset by enemies, and you quickly learn to never let your guard down. Even the most common and clumsy enemies you encounter have attacks that can make short work of you if you're not careful. Melee combat is straightforward; there are no elaborate combos to learn, and Dark Souls certainly doesn't need them. With the small assortment of attacks, blocks, parries, and evasive maneuvers at your disposal, the combat in Dark Souls becomes a deadly dance in which each of your strikes that hits its target is a small victory and each potentially devastating attack from an enemy that you narrowly evade offers a new lease on life. Just be aware that poorly implemented mouse and keyboard support makes playing the game that way much too unwieldy; the game demands a controller.

Each new area brings with it challenging new enemies, as varied and memorable in their designs as they are in their techniques. Huge knights slumber in a forest, slowly and menacingly getting to their feet when you draw near. In the painted world of Ariamis, foul abominations with repulsive toxic sacs around their heads threaten to poison you when you deliver the killing blow. And you won't soon forget the first time you're cursed by the big-eyed basilisks of the depths, as your body becomes covered in a crystalline growth and you freeze in a pained gesture as death takes you.

There's a wide variety of weapons to acquire and use, with each type offering a different fighting style. (Some swords are for swinging, and others are for thrusting, for example.) There's also a good assortment of weapon enhancement options. As you progress and collect crafting items, you find that you can have a blacksmith make your weapons more powerful, and eventually imbue them with effects like lightning or fire. Finding a better weapon or making your existing weapon more powerful isn't just a matter of added convenience; it can be the difference between survival and failure. And if you prefer to keep your distance from foes, bows and a diverse assortment of magic spells can be very effective, though you still need to frequently tangle with enemies in intense, close-quarters battles.

The stakes can be high as you venture through Dark Souls, making your determination to survive and persevere that much greater. As you vanquish enemies, you collect souls, which can be spent to level up your character, or to purchase items and services from the few blacksmiths and merchants eking out an existence in certain corners of the world. These souls are a precious commodity indeed, and should you fall in battle (and you will), your souls fall with you. However, all is not immediately lost. If, in your next life, you can make it back to the spot of your previous demise and touch your bloodstain, you regain the souls you had acquired. Perish again without recovering them, however, and they disappear forever. It's a crushing feeling to die, knowing that it means the permanent loss of a significant number of hard-earned souls, but it's precisely that danger that makes the struggle to stay alive so exciting.

Dark Souls is one of the best games I've ever played, period. This is not just an RPG or action adventure game. It's difficulty forces you to value each life, especially when you don't want to lose a large amount of souls that you've collect. In a sense, that very aspect of gameplay gives this game a bit of a "survival" feel.  It is every bit worth trying and I would recommend you play it at night in the dark, ESPECIALLY the Tomb of Giants! :-)

Why when I click in the game it close into desktop automatically???

Despite the obviousness of DS being a horrible port, I would like to know if there is much depth in the looting/character building systems in this game ?

It would seem to me that DS has a very dumbed down looting and character development system due to it's unfortunate origins, or am i not seeing the full deal in the video reviews ?

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

Dasha8su Dumbed down? Dark Souls?? Dumbed down????

:) Please try to be more specific. All I can say right now is that the game is very well designed.

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

Dasha8su Ha, you should watch some of these EpicNameBro's weapons guide videos to give you an idea of character building:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmruifnBqPc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=See1NSXTyYo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqhSS2vctWQ

Unfortunately, he hasn't continued with the other weapon types yet, but it's just to give you an idea. I don't think you'll remember much if you haven't played the game so, almost no spoilers.

I'll tell you what guys, in spite of all the technical issues, Dark Souls is without a doubt the best and most rewarding RPG experience I've had in years. Just give it a try and you'll either love it or hate it. To me this game's hardcore mechanics was nothing less than a revelation from the past. There used to be a time when they made challenging games you know...

Just be warned that if you fall for DS, it will eat up a whole lot of you time. And If you think it won't, you're crazy=)

You people do know this port was only done because fans signed a petition for From Software to do a PC port, in which their development team had no experience in (yes, they said this). So not only did they do this for their fans, but even added extra content to go along with it... Stop you're dumb a$$ complaining and get it for a console, get the mouse patch (yes its been done), or buy a dam controller you whiny entitled morons.

HKILLER88888 11 pts

i haven't played this yet but my friend told me the 1st boss is freaking impossible and graphics are horrible even with the fix patches...so is it THAT BAD or it's not that bad?

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

HKILLER88888 Sorry, but your friend doesn't seem to know what he/she is talking about. The game is not near as hard as many people say. It could be too hard if you've never used a minimum of strategy or observation, thinking, in a game (or real life), like if you're used to play games pressing just the forward button and mindlessly tapping the attack/fire button.

Also he/she doesn't seem to have completed the tutorial level (the tutorial!) because that level has really bad textures (there may be a mod for this on the nexus since DSfix -Resolution Fix- allows texture modding), after that I can only remember the game looking really amazing and beautiful (just config the resolution and other graphics settings of the fix, although I've read people saying they thought the console graphics were great). Trust me, the art direction/design really compensates the limits in the budget for graphics (or memory for textures) they'd had. I always find myself marveled by the beauty and design of the locations; I wanted to upload a bunch of screenshots I quickly found among the infinite screenshots I took :), but I couldn't :(.

Well, the game itself is amazing, it has awesome gameplay, lore, design, everything. Oh, download Mouse Fix if you're intending to use keyboard and mouse rather than a controller.

Cuthbert1970 12 pts

HKILLER88888 Your friend is an idiot then. The first boss isn't impossible at all. A jump off the ledge while attacking and then a few chops at the fat demon and he's done. So you may have to pull a few rolls through the barrels as you track around him, big deal.. that's part of the core combat mechanics in the game. And the graphics are damned fine with the patch in my opinion. I can't understand all these complaints at all about the graphics. I think the game looks outstanding. Sounds like your friend is just putting it down out of frustration at being unable to beat the Asylum demon and hence progress any further.

Sad Sad day Gamespot when objective real reviews are gone are now you are so obvious at being bought out by big majors.  Hang your heads in shame for this overrated crappy console kiddie port. RPG for PC's? are you on LSD?  Get some objectivity pls. Carolyn Petit please go get some history of real PC gaming under your belt.  Get your own opinion.  Then re-write your review objectively.

what a horrible, horrible lazy port this is. it's horrible.

but i am really liking the game and if it had proper controlling like ANY proper 3rd person mouselook camera and allowed for binding actions to the number keys over the letters and let me use all my mouse buttons and the F keys and didn't use a joypad simulator wrapper and optimised it and used the original texture dimensions they originally created (because they design the textures and then decrease their resolution when OPTIMISING on the consoles to run faster), that would be great.

i could go on and complain more but i'm thankful enough for reading this far, thsi comment's dear reader.

great game ... with DSFix ....10/10

Klikandclick 39 pts

You can download DSFix to alleviate the graphics issues, but if you're willing to pass up one of the best games out right now because you can see a few pixels then quite honestly you have lost your damn mind and need to go out more.

To all who are wondering, there are mods that help with the PC-Issues.

Just go to Dark Souls Nexus, and you'll find everything you need to enhance your PC experience.

Keep an eye on the Dark Souls nexus anyways, because in time, we might get some "content" mods as well, and not just unofficial bug fixes. =D

Monsj 11 pts

Will the extra content show up on the ps3 and 360?

Yes, I believe it will be released as DLC expansion packs in November, so keep an eye out. =)

I'm blown away by this game and completely addicted. Landing sub-boss and boss kills is extremely satisfying. I'm playing on my PC with a $29 Logitech gamepad and the controls are spot-on. Dying frequently in the game appears to be a necessity for the purpose of re-spawning enemies in order to gain sufficient experience to progress. I think it's a unique and brilliant play concept as its applied and executed in Dark Souls. Additionally, the fact that the hero is always struggling with undeath and humanity, it seems that by dying often while playing shouldn't be such a revelation to players.

Level 48 and just entering Blighttown. Loving this damn game!

I'll never be able to play Skyrim seriously again ;cNot that there's anything wrong with it, but this games combat and gameplay is SO much more fulfilling than any other adventure game I've ever played. I guess it's a good thing I got just under 200 hours out of Skyrim before I played Dark Souls *shrugs*

PCsama 10 pts

i never played it before and this game looks awesome ..i shall wait until the developers fix the PC version issues :)

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

PCsama They'll probably never fix them (they don't have experience on PC and I don't think they have the resources to spend), but you'd only need one or two mods for that. Try to take a look at my comment below and my reply to face_ripper down below (for the essential mods).

The reviewer just copied score from KvanOrd's review.  I have tried the game on a PC - the port is really bad, but I have PS3 version as well and I can say that the game itself deserves 9.5, not the port.

I just can't get, why people arguing so much about this product - just don't buy it, if it's so bad (FS will get the lesson). I recommend to remember story how this port was realeased - do you think it worth for FS to input a lot of money in a port, after petition, if only 50k of gamers will buy it and another will just download it for the PC?:)

I think that the real shame is - how this shitty Skyrim got the GOTY, it's not Dark Souls though (but for me it's GOTY), but not boring Skyrim too. How about bugs in a PS3 versions (sometimes 6 FPS on a PS3 - c'mon, they couldn't fix this for 4 months, yeah, PS3 not super powerful PC, but it can run 30 FPS at least for such a game)? So, don't blame console people, I got tired of it.  Why so much hate because of consoles? I don't like PC, because I like just to input a disc and sit on comfortable sofa in front of big screen, but I'm jealous for Diablo 3 and GW2:). Blame the game industry itself and pirates...

VGjunkie87 46 pts

@DanteValente The biggest issue with the PC right now is piracy, but what Is most likely to happen is developers will make their games free-to-play because they can only have control over their networks. So I wouldn't be worried about the future of PC gaming, the only thing I see keeping consoles relevant is exclusive games and the ignorance many people possess when it comes to assembling a reasonably priced gaming PC. As far as sitting on a sofa in front of a big-screen, that's all doable with a PC and you'll have full 1080p resolution, not up-scaled 720p. I have a 360 and I only keep it because I like Gears 3 and Forza 4 besides that paying to connect to the Live network is ridiculous, and every part/accessory is proprietary. Also the steam and games top apps constantly have great deals on downloadable games which would be considerably more when purchasing for a console, so when you think you're getting a great/convenient deal with a console, you'll pay in other ways.

DanteValente 8 pts

VGjunkie87 , in principle I agree with you. When I bought my PS3 console it had real advantages over PC. Right now I'm not quite sure that I will buy a new generation console, unless they will introduce something really great.  I better will buy power PC, since, as you mentioned, I can "sit on the sofa" with it as well and good performance, but I can still wait until the end of current generation. I like PS, because of it's exclusives: GoW, MGS, some FF, etc.. But now, almost all of big projects became multiplatform and there is no reason to pay for PS3 games in 2-3 times more...(unless you is a fanboy). So, for now, console gaming looks a little bit doomed. Though, even after this words I can't stand people that insult another players because of PC-console war:)

Cyber_Spirit 11 pts

Game doesn't deserve 9,5 at all. This port is awfull, if you really want to play it you need to loose few hours to make it playable. You have to download and manually customize game's graphics, keyboard bindings and after i've done it all I lost the will to play it :( Games should not have so much complications before you can play them, it's just annoying!

124C1 24 pts

Cyber_Spirit I wonder, do people whine so much about every technical issue they encounter nowadays?

Cyber_Spirit 11 pts

124C1 sorry bro, but i can't spend all my free time to adjust the game i would like to play ;) if all you have is free time, no work, no stduying then go ahead :)

124C1 24 pts

Cyber_Spirit I study and work now. Adjusting this game with fixes takes 'bout 15 mins, okay?

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

Cyber_Spirit

"[you have to] manually customize game's graphics" LOL have you ever really played on PC? That's too easy and quick to complain about (imo) and I very much welcome customization! ;D

I spend some time customizing the controls for keyboard-mouse, but it was in spans of time where I was adapting the controls to my liking, while playing and seeing what key would be better for certain action or how would it feel more comfortable (in that way, I'm glad you can configure everything); but I give you that, it didn't bothered me but I can understand why it could. But to lose the will to play for that? I don't know about that...

Cyber_Spirit 11 pts

KeviNOlighT Got PC for 10 years played more then 150 game titles, some two times over ;) Customizatioin is great if it's bound ingame, not this way when i have to search for it onilne. I can understand the game is good for you, but it's just not for me ;)

CaptWaffle 14 pts

Wow.  Usually us console people get screwed when it comes to ports.  Yippee!!  Although when I went the "cheap" route by stopping the constant PC upgrades and went to an Xbox 360 I may have lost many of my strategy and simulation games.... at least I apparently have the uber-version of Dark Souls!  Score one for the consoles!!  (still doesn't make up for the dearth of strategy games but I'll take whatever victories I can get!)

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

CaptWaffle Nah, the PC version is so much better with one or two mods (fixes). Plus there's a Nexus page for DS mods now (mostly just for textures), so you can enhance or personalize armor and such (like, for matching parts that you like). I can upload comparison screenshots if you want to see the difference (only in graphics, not the other stuff).

face_ripper 38 pts

enough with "get a controller" if we wanted to use a controller we'd play it on a console.. its a PC game we want MOUSE and KEYBOARD controls.

face_ripper 38 pts

and dont say "the devs made a straight port from consoles" cuz thats just bull..

face_ripper 38 pts

PS: i dont hate the game, i like it, i really do, but i dont like the port and disrespect the devs are giving us PC gamers

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

face_ripper Yeah, the port could be a lot better, but just use the Mouse Fix (http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/28/). I'll never get tired of recommending this game on PC because of all the extra features you can get, specially with DSfix (http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/19/) and there's other mods too.

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

face_ripper Although, I really hope that if From Software makes another great game, they don't get discouraged, but see it as a good opportunity to make a good port or PC version that time. But I'm worried after all this :\.

julianboxe 13 pts

face_ripper I had the same exact opinion. But then again, this game looked so awesome and since i hant bought it for xbox, i said to my self: "Might as well get an extra controler for the xbox and also play this game on PC"

I coulnt be more right. The game is amongst the best i've ever played, and i've been a long time fan of RTS games like starcraft and c&c;, that are only playable on PC with Keyboard and Mouse.

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

julianboxeface_ripper

If it's of any use, here's what I wrote about my keyboard-mouse setup (using Mouse Fix) after being asked:

http://pastebin.com/xEekJKkY

julianboxe 13 pts

KeviNOlighT  face_ripper So with those fixes you think K+M plays better than with the controller?

KeviNOlighT 53 pts

julianboxe  face_ripper Imo yes, that's how I set it up for my liking. I really missed using my keyboard and mouse so that's what I felt more comfortable with. I also have sensitivity set to 10 (in both, mouse fix's dsmfix.ini and in-game options), plus "lock_disables_mouse" and "scroll_switches_targets" set to 0 in dsmfix.ini (I forgot about it). But, again, that's just for me.
