Sifteo Cubes

New gaming platforms don't come along every day, so when they do they're always worth taking a look at. In 2011 years ago a small tech company, Sifteo Inc., headed up by David Merrill and Jeevan Kalanithi - two products of the MIT Media Lab, released an innovative gaming product, the Sifteo Cubes. They were a collection if small, 1.7 inch blocks with clickable LCD screens that communicated wirelessly with one another, allowing for responsive information to be passed between them, creating a system of tangible interactive objects. While they were pioneering, they we not without their limitations (requiring a computer to transmit data, a limited number of applications, hardware restrictions, etc.), but served as a great introduction of the concept for consumers and developers alike. Today Sifteo announced an updated, second generation of the Sifteo Cubes to build on the solid ground of the first generation by improving the platform in just about every way.

Touch controls make tablet gaming pretty tough to enjoy and a lot gamers won't even bother giving it shot. However, as tablets become more and more powerful, developers will be able to create more high quality games. Thankfully, one manufacturer sees the potential and is in the process of creating the Wikipad, a powerful Tegra 3 powered tablet accompanied by a console-style controller attachment.

Streaming game service, OnLive, has recently put out and update for its Android app that will let us play full PC-quality HD games on smartphones and tablets like Amazon's recent Kindle Fire. Support for iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad is coming soon, very soon we hope.

The OnLive app, which originally only allowed users to browse through the catalog of available games and use the social features the service provides, will now give gamers complete gameplay support for any of the titles the service currently offers, such as Batman: Arkham City and Rockstar's L.A. A while back we heard that HBO GO would be showing up on Xbox LIVE in the not too distant future. With incredible original series’ like Game of Thrones and Bored to Death you can imagine how excited we were. Now, Microsoft has released the official announcement and blown us away by not only confirming HBO GO, but revealing over 50 other worldwide media partners coming to Xbox LIVE.

As if HBO GO wasn’t enough Bravo, Manga Entertainment, SyFy and a bunch of others will also be joining the lineup -- turning Xbox LIVE into a true entertainment hub. The folks out there subscribed to Comcast or Verizon FIOS cable plans will also be able to access their provider’s on-demand services such as Comcast’s Xfinity TV.

Less than a month ago, gaming peripheral company Razer announced that they were releasing the world's "first" gaming laptop. Go ahead and take a moment to choke that one down. Today, during Tokyo Game Show, the company has announced that they are working on developing a new Xbox 360 arcade stick. Honestly, where do they find the time?

The catch is that Razer are looking for input on their prototype from experienced players, and what better place to do that but in fighting-genre-loving Japan.
