Take a comic book, put it on TV, and the fans go nuts. Take a TV show and adapt it to a comic and… Not so much. Mainly because most of them are shockingly bad. That said? There’s been a few TV to comic book adaptations that don’t just not suck, they’re actually good. Here are ten of the best:
IDW’s recent comics based on the sweaty, dirty HBO vampire series may lack the wall-to-wall nudity, but they make up for it in crazy creatures and buckets of blood. It’s tough to nail the voices of “real” characters, but these comics do it swimmingly… Fake sounding Southern accents and all.

This week, two great geeky tastes come together for the first time: Stephen Root, and Fringe. Not only that, but the Office Space/True Blood star acts opposite his real life wife on screen for the first time. We’ve seen the episode, and not only does it have huge revelations about what’s been going on with Peter Bishop, but a heartbreaking story involving Root and wife Romy Rosemont. Oh, and of course, crazy science.
We had the chance to talk to Root on a conference call set up by FOX in preparation for this Friday’s episode of Fringe, and the affable, very kind and funny actor kept things moving and a fun clip as he answered questions about his acting method, alternate universes, and oh, some minor spoilers here and there: Read more...

Not only are evil Martians getting a regular series at IDW, Charlane Harris's sexed-up vampires, witches, werewolves, and fairies are getting their own monthly book starting next year. That means between this announcement and Dynamite's Game of Thrones series, HBO has doubled its comic presence in the last year. Now, if only someone could greenlight that Boardwalk Empire series featuring Chalky White that we all want.
"Sookeh." You'll have to just read it aloud that way to get the completely broad southern-fried accent adopted by actor Bill Moyer to get it just right.
Here's IDW's pitching the series:
“The comics are a great way to continue telling True Blood stories off screen,” said show creator, Alan Ball. “With this new ongoing series, Truebies will be able to find a new comic in stores every month. We’ll also have even more room to create in-depth drama and further explore the world of Bon Temps.”
Added IDW chief operations officer, Greg Goldstein, “IDW could not be happier than to move to this next step with our HBO partners. Since we originally launched TRUE BLOOD comics in 2010, fans have been asking for an ongoing series, and we’re happy to be able to work with HBO and offer it.”
Currently, no creative teams have been announced or attached,
The True Blood ongoing comic will begin in the spring of 2012.

I really wasn't expecting limited edition True Blood headphones to roll into my inbox yesterday evening, but here they are.I'll admit they look pretty slick, but I don’t think slapping True Blood on the side is enough for me to drop the $150 needed to bring them home. So what else is V-MODA bringing to the table with these blood-sucking noise makers? Quite a bit actually. Read more...

The ghost of a Spanish witch burned at the stake is set to take her revenge on the vampires of the world. Can Bill protect his kingdom?
So if you haven't been digging the witch-ity goings-on in True Blood then this is definitely not the episode for you, filled as it is, with wall-to-wall spells, possessions, flashbacks, magic circles, and curses. We get to see the spirit inhabiting Marnie (calling herself Antonia now) do her thing, causing Bill and the vampires of the kingdom of Louisiana to run scared. With this episode, she begins marshaling an army, made up of Earth mothers, burnouts, and hippies--and Tara(!)--with the promise of providing this huddled mass of terrified humanity protection from vamps. What that really means is that she plans on forcing all of the vampires to crawl out of their coffins in the middle of the day and march out into the blazing sun. Say what you will about the overall hokiness of ghost witches (along with Bill's shortsighted plan to protect himself and the rest of his kingdom), the writers of True Blood know how to set up an effect threat for their fanged "heroes."
