I never touched that thing. Wasn't worth it to me for the upgrade reasons you talked of. Damn I miss the hell out of this game. Great blog.
The Drake Sword may be worthless later on, but it can get you through over half the game without a problem on your first playthrough. I'm pretty sure that's the only reason it's there.
I imagine it may be practical to keep a pet project weapon to upgrade on the side while you use the Drake Sword. Like a chia pet you don't want to show anyone until it's fully grown.
Philk3n - Thanks man. Hope you can get a replacement copy soon, its a shitty situation you have going on.
Corduroy - Much appreciated! I tried to keep it light enough so there was SOMETHING there for the non-DkS players. "Who wants to hear Wrench talk about stats for that game he doesn't shut up about!?" - NOBODY.
Pedrovay - I don't know about that. I'd say it can get you past a 1/3rd of the game at the most. Anor Londo is when things get spicy, and the four Lord Souls you need to acquire it after it make up the meat of the game. But yeah, it can give new players a break. It's just unfortunate that it causes a lot of people to miss out on the upgrade system and sets them up for future frustration.
Strider - Heh, wouldn't want the demons to see you at anything less than your best. I mean, we may be undead hollows, but we still have standards!
You actually make a good point, I suppose if you don't mind flinging arrows at the Hellkite AND collecting the souls to upgrade your personal project it might not be a bad solution. I am a VERY vain DkS player though, and I typically like to get good and nerdy with my characters and build them to use a specific type of weapon or style (yes I RP Dark Souls, I am a terrible person). The Drake Sword with its ... brownness, doesn't really jive with my style. Maybe I'll make a Dragon Dude to use it someday.

Great article - if any new DkS players have the good fortune to read it, you've done them a service.
Entertainingly written, so those of us hip to the DkS vibe can enjoy the article, even if we already know the score on weapon upgrading.

My uncle works for From Software, and he told me that the Drake Sword is in the game because it was meant to serve as a promotional tool for the release of hip-hop superstar, Drake's new album. There was also gonna be a piece of DLC called the "YOLO" DLC where "you only lived once" for the whole game and could win Drake's new CD if you beat it. The whole idea ended up being scrapped, though.
Joking aside, great blog. I had similar ideas about the Drake sword as well when I started a new character the other day. It seems to be a generous gift at first, but it probably is meant to also serve as a trap to losers who don't know any better about the weapon upgrading system.

Yeah, I honestly never even tried to figure out the stat screen in Dark Souls or Demon's Souls. I just eventually stumbled upon weapons that worked well for the stats I was upgrading. I might be much better at the games if I took the time to understand what all those numbers and letters mean (not that I'm bad at the games of course!)
I do feel bad though for all the people clutching their Drake Swords for much too long, like a safety blanket. Or maybe they just like the challenge of playing the entire game with a terrible weapon (probably not).

You just outdid Knut in Dark Soulsering. I am proud of you. Also this is a really, really good blog, but you forgot to mention the ultimate noob weapon.
Holy Heavy Crossbow. I know that sounds dumb, but believe it or not, the thing is super effective, cheap to maintain, and easy to use/upgrade. Not only that, but Knutaf hates when you shoot him with it.

I was late in reading this, but it was real fun to read! It's so easy to spot the beginners by the Drake Sword. Usually accompanied by gold-hemmed black set, fang boar helm, stone armor, knight shield... sometimes I'll get these people on private chat and try to drop them something bettter.
hahaha handsomebeast
and yes, falsenipple's stupid crossbow thing is obnoxious. quit shooting me!

Great blog. I didn't go for the Drake Sword myself, I went with that other overpowered crutch you get from harassing the bridge dragon -- the Claymore. It's not gimmicky in the same way, granted, but I wound up ignoring a lot of the system's nuance because I could just one-hit bitches from twenty feet away with that ridiculous lunge move. Maybe, in that regard, even the "legitimate" weapon choices are a trap, as they can let you sink into techniques and playstyles that work like gangbusters against crapass skeletons with very rote combat styles, but come up short in a "real" fight where variables like enemy placement and behavior can't be taken for granted, like in PvP. Or was that just me?
