    On your iPad

    • The app will ask if you want to start using Newsstand and have our daily edition downloaded automatically every morning. Tap "Yes" or "No," depending on your preference.
    • If you tap "Yes," a new daily edition will be downloaded to your iPad every morning. If you tap "No," the app will behave as it did before updating. A device may become locked after five failed attempts to login or five attempts to create an account with invalid subscription information. • Are Kindle subscribers eligible for free access to the app?

No. At this time only print and e-edition subscribers get a free iPad app subscription.

  • I tried downloading the app but got an error about having "already purchased" it

Apple gives this message if you are running an older version of the operating system. The San Francisco Chronicle for iPad requires iOS 4.2 or later. You will need to sync your iPad with your computer and update to the latest operating system.

  • The app is taking up a lot of space on my iPad. How do I clear up some room?

The app should delete data automatically after 48 hours. However, if a user finds that the app is taking up an unusual amount of space on their iPad -- anything over 500MB, typically -- there are several things that can help.

First, turn off Newsstand. Newsstand automatically downloads the daily edition to every morning to your iPad for offline reading. Disabling this feature may reduce the amount of space the app takes up on your iPad. Turning off Newsstand is easy: Just go to Settings app, and then tap on "Store" on the left side column. From there, find our application and turn the switch to "Off".

If you'd rather keep Newsstand on, you can clear out old editions directly from the app itself. To do that, open the app, navigate to an edition and tap the "Settings" button in the lower right corner. Tap on "Edition Management", then tap the "Clear all editions" button. After this process is completed, all of the app's editions will be deleted. That should free up a lot of space.

One other sure-fire way to clear out any old edition space would be to reset the app completely. To do that, first make sure to completely close our app by double tapping on the home button, then tapping and holding our icon from the multitasking tray and finally tapping the red minus button. After that, go to the "Settings" app and find our app in the left column and switch the "Reset" button to "On". The next time you open the app you'll see a notice that the app has been reset.

We're working on ways to reduce the app's storage space. Look for an update in the near future.
