Sons of Anarchy game 'dead'

Show creator Kurt Sutter says after "no interest" from industry and "little support" from Fox, he is no longer pursuing tie-in.

The Sons of Anarchy game has screeched to a halt. Show creator Kurt Sutter said on Twitter today that he is no longer trying to bring a game based on the FX biker drama to market.

"I'm done," he said. "No interest from industry, little support from Fox. It B dead."

Just yesterday, Sutter reached out to Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption studio Rockstar Games to see if the company was interested in making the Sons of Anarchy game. Sutter asked the company to call him regarding a potential partnership, though it is not clear if any discussion between the two parties ever took place.

The Sons of Anarchy game has gone from new idea to its grave in just nine months. Sutter first teased a tie-in in February, when he stated a browser-based game was possible. Then in May, he confirmed larger plans for the game after meeting with a mystery distributor, saying the project would be a "real" title for consoles that may take a while to create.

Less encouraging news on the Sons of Anarchy game came in August, when Sutter claimed a major publisher dismissed the project, and added that the game may never come to market.

Sons of Anarchy is an FX television show in its fifth season that focuses on a closely knit group of motorcycle outlaws. It is set in the fictional town of Charming, California, and stars Charlie Hunnam (Green Street Hooligans) as the show's protagonist Jackson "Jax" Teller. Sons of Anarchy also features Katey Sagal (Married with Children, Futurama) and Ron Perlman (Fallout: New Vegas, Hellboy).

Nothing good happens overnight in the game industry. I'm glad he gave up so easily. Del Toro has the patience and perseverance that's necessary. Obviously, this guy doesn't.

modernsocks 33 pts

wyan_ What's Benicio's game idea? I've never heard about that.

sortajan 366 pts

i've never even heard of this

Elann2008 217 pts

Kurt hit the nail on the head.  "No interest" is right.

soulless4now 461 pts

Might be a blessing in disguise for him.

hickabickabooya 89 pts

I must have missed the earlier stories about this, cause is the first I have heard anything about a SoA game.

YIGIF 11 pts

I liked his enthusiasm about the idea though, nice try Kurt.

ALG_82 8 pts

well considering nearly every movie/tv show game is a piece of s**t, I would say that this was a good move. It's a great show, you don't need anything else especially a mediocre half-ass video game.

YIGIF 11 pts

ALG_82 Exactly, I think peoples justified paranoia about movie/tv adaption games put them at odds with this idea, not to say Rockstar would have made a half-assed effort.

FranklynStreet 6 pts

ALG_82 Well, the whole thing was that Sutter wanted to make sure it wasn't mediocre.  But he seems to have realized that without it being an IP wholly owned by the publisher/distributor, it was going to be a back-breaking labor to get it produced on the level with AAA IPs.  So he had 2 options: A) cave and let someone produce that shitty, mediocre game, or B) add another full-time job to his plate spearheading the production of the game over the next few years.  Accepting that he couldn't do that while keeping his job as showrunner of the series, and without the support of anyone from the gaming industry to help, it was plug-pulling time.

MoreThot 107 pts

well, personally i think this is a good move. The show is great and most games that are made after a movie/show turn flop anyways.

blackace 440 pts

Never knew a game was being made. I never watched the show.

Gam1nG_W1zard 17 pts

I guess since Lost and the Damned was so similar to this show, it would be kinda hard to make this an actual game without seeming like they are re-releasing the GTA version

Hellhound30x 218 pts

Gam1nG_W1zard I was just about to say that... but yeah totally agreed!

Tekken312 91 pts

I liked Lost and the Damned (aside from the naked dude). Riding as a biker is a cool idea, something Road Rash proved years ago. I think Rockstar would have as good a shot as anyone of making it work.

ImpliedBunny 81 pts

Tekken312 Like a naked man is something you have never seen before.  i honestly dont understand people's hatred of nudity.  its nature.  you dont freak out when you see a dogs balls do you?

Pyrosa 257 pts

I just don't see how the game could have been, well, much of a GAME.   GTA4's first expansion tried to follow this kind of storyline, and it simply didn't work well.  (Heh -- they even had Ron Perlman, pretty much in the same character... Makes me wonder if someone played the expansion and THEN copied the idea for a show...)

shadow-crow 81 pts

Pyrosa The problem with that was it was GTA4, and in my opinion, the game was trying ot hard to be funny and sierious, the jokes were to childish and the drama to intense that they canceled out a little bit, a vivd memory was immediately after doing a side mission and killing a few people, roman called me and told me to go to tw@, or after I kicked some one off of a building, he mention the BAWSDAQ. I felt like this was a bigger problem in the expansion packs than in the main part.

I said this yesterday in the news ( http://www.gamespot.com/news/kurt-sutter-wants-rockstar-to-make-sons-of-anarchy-game-6399213#generic_comments ), but Rockstar doesn't need to use other companies IPs and therefore pay royalties. It's not a big loss really.

I want games to come out that are based on fresh gaming experiences, not some game that's tied to a TV show IP and plays just like every game out there.

It would have just ended up as a cookie cutter game.

J_Dangerously 225 pts

Rockstar is in a position now where it doesn't need anything but its own IPs.  The last time they did a game treatment on anything owned by someone else was The Warriors back in '05.

Its just not good business sense to spend years and an untold amount of coding-hours on a product that you won't have complete control over.

cdog21 63 pts

Trippy. I just saw him the other day on X-play talking about how a SoA game would have worked with the game story line being parallel to the TV story line. Sort of like The Walking Dead game and the comics.

00LiteYear 94 pts

cdog21 Zombie games are pretty universal, so the game is only connected to the comic or show in name alone. It could stand by itself without the title, but a game about biking would seem pretty boring.

OHGFawx 355 pts

Good. The show is successful, it doesn't need a game.

00LiteYear 94 pts

The problem might be SoA has no targetted audience. If a majority of gamers don't watch FX, then they aren't going to get hyped for this. And if the show's majority of viewers just watch TV for entertainment, then they could care less for videogames.

Only a small minority, as it seems, would care for this tie-in to work; and that isn't something major publishers are looking for.

Besides, isn't Rockstar already busy with GTA5?

BuBsay 273 pts

Less than 24 hours since he announced he wanted to do this, he's now saying he's scrapped the idea.

Well that's some dedication right there.

Tseng 167 pts

BuBsay Try 9 months, though some would argue that he did in fact give up too soon.  It's only been a day since he tried to get R* on board.

n64nut 54 pts

Would have turned out good if Rockstar had gotten involved; the Lost and Damned DLC for GTA4 was damn close to the show.

CloWnCircus 60 pts

n64nut Exactly what I thought when I started watching the show. Although I love the show, The Lost and Damned DLC was the least interesting from the whole package. (GTA4, L&D; and TBOGT)

ziproy 425 pts

Yeah cuz games based on TV shows are always good right??

akedo1 5 pts

I say just incorporate That world into the next Title.. Gta 6 Sons Of Anarchy.. etc... Something along those lines.. the other mc's the cartel.. all of it could fit right in... Start out as a "Prospect" and work your way up... I would buy it... Good Crosspromotion for both..

akedo1 5 pts

already aware of Lost and damned.. could be a crossover extension of that.. Hell almost everything is already there.. just mocap actors, and voiceovers needed.. etc...

jcloverboy 5 pts

One of the most overrated shows on television. Things always come together a little too easy. I compare the show and all their talk of a club to a group of boys with a clubhouse with a "No Girls Allowed" sign on the outsideWhen the show "raises" the stakes it only gets worse. Needs to be a little more grounded.

CloWnCircus 60 pts

jcloverboy Come together too easy? How many episodes did you watch? 3? Ron Perlman's character has got to be the most loved\hated character in a TV Show in a while, only compared to "Benjamin Linus" in Lost. Sure, sometimes you have to "fast-forward" some of the affairs to avoid stagnation but saying things come together too easy is not a fair critic.

plaintomato 128 pts

Would've been a great idea for GTA V DLC if not for the Lost and the Damned making it a been there done that kind of idea.

DarthLod 1125 pts

Good. TV shows shouldn't be come games.

Cozm1kaos 238 pts

DarthLod Why not? I see potential!! building up rep lvling!! E.T.C

plaintomato 128 pts

DarthLod Guess you haven't watched Oprah then...that would be a sweet video game.

abdougamer 9 pts

R.A.G.E should be the perfect engine for the game .

buccomatic 1734 pts

i don't want this game, ever.

MJ12-Conspiracy 755 pts

This is actually a good thing, I love the show but just like game adapted movies usually suck, film and TV adapted games usually suck, I'm glad SOA won't be another one of these travesties......

Johny_47 251 pts

That's no biggie for me, better than a really bad game being made just for the sake of it, the TV series is brilliant on its own, looking forward to the next season. I'm still wondering when it's starting back in the UK.

endorbr 1595 pts

Not really sure this is a show that would translate as a game anyway.  Not saying there aren't gamers that watch it but I don't really think that there is a high demand for a game around it either.

topeira 67 pts

hasnt there already been a game sorta like SOA called "GTAIV: lost and damned"?was close enough to the show IMO and was fun. i had enough bikers.

Sgthombre 903 pts

What's that? I couldn't hear you over the fact that "The Lost and the Damned" is already far more interesting then your motorbiking show.

shivR 13 pts

I like this show but I don't think it would be worth doing a game for this show. I mean maybe a GTA:IV mod or something but I would think your best bet for something like this would be the Lost and the Damned expansion for GTA:IV.

mr_azim 37 pts

SOA has a very exclusive audience... it's getting a little more interest these days, but with Breaking Bad ending, Walking Dead taking over and other shows like American Horror Story getting a lot of attention, the SOA "Biker" fans aren't enough.

Jamesp2005 19 pts

mr_azim Funny how it's ratings go up every season.

mr_azim 37 pts

lol he reached out yesterday and gave up today..... way to stick to your guns :P

fail.

TroubleMaker411 48 pts

mr_azim Yeah, Sutter has been going on about getting a game made for a little under a year.

Shouting out to Rockstar yesterday was a last ditch attempt on his part to get some industry interest drummed up.
