$500 gamepad-equipped tablet delayed

Wikipad delayed indefinitely due to necessary last-minute adjustments; new release date to be announced soon.

The first tablet with an attachable gamepad controller, the Wikipad, was supposed to launch October 31, but that date has come and gone without its arrival. Its developer has confirmed that the tablet has been delayed indefinitely due to necessary eleventh hour adjustments.

"There is a last minute opportunity to enhance the Wikipad bundle as well as a minor refinement needed to ensure our first customers are completely satisfied with the Wikipad," reads a line from the company's statement.

The Wikipad was originally scheduled to launch exclusively at GameStop for $500. According to the company, those who preordered a unit are still guaranteed a system, and will also be provided a "special bonus gift." This was not detailed.

"We are very eager to deliver the Wikipad experience and are passionate about excellence," the statement goes on to say. "We apologize for this delay and want you to know that we are committed to bringing you the very best, high-end gaming tablet possible."

A new release date for the device will be announced soon, the company said.

The Wikipad will support games downloadable through PlayStation Mobile, Nvidia's Tegra Zone, Google Play, and other forthcoming platforms. The device features a 10.1-inch IPS screen and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

The Wikipad will also feature support from cloud gaming company Gaikai, which was recently purchased by Sony for $380 million. Gamers will be able to stream Gaikai's library of titles to their Wikipad, which includes big-name games like Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, and Saints Row: The Third.

GameStop is making a change, not releasing it.

The Wikipad looks awesome with the game pad style. i hope they make these for all types of touch screens. i hate using the touch screen to play games!

ohhh they delay this great thing for only 500 dollars...what a shame...

ok..it would make so much more sense..look better and be more portable to port android to the vita than to buy that ugly ass tablet..android on the vita would kick

My current laptop cost $450. Not only can it run most recent PC games on max settings, but, it can also do a Hell of alot more than a tablet.

Pass.

What? What kind of laptop do you have? And at $450?? I'm interested.

HP Pavilion Entertainment PC

CPU: AMD Dual Core 2.6GHz (A6 4400M)

RAM: 4GB

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 7520 512MB

500GB hdd

Runs Fallout 3 on max, L4D on max, Oblivion on max...

undercover30 6 pts

nate1222 Wow nice deal at $450.

nate1222 827 pts

It's not really a "deaL'. It's pretty standard price on laptops these days. In any Best Buy or Target or Wal-Mart, what I got for <$500 is pretty standard.

The great myth of PC gaming is the idea that one has to be an 'elitist' who spends $1000 on a PC and $300 on a graphics card. It's a crock of shit cooked up by those who wanna stay in your wallet: "You don't want to be 'inferior', do you?"

But, if someone thinks they "have to" spend upwards of $1k to evade 'inferiority'...there's one born every minute.

those games arent recent...

megakick 292 pts

 nate1222  undercover30

Oblivion was released in 2006...

Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 in 2008...

Those are not new games.

you paid too much if you paid $450.

You laptop is less powerful then a XBOX 360.

undercover30 6 pts

megakick  nate1222  undercover30 I do agree about the games. But at $450 I still think for a laptop its not bad.

nate1222 827 pts

 megakick  undercover30

Too much? A laptop does a Hell of alot more than a gaming console.

Plus, PC games will still be relevent several years down the road. Console games are rarely ever relevent passed their given gen; the propietary hardware they run on will be discontinued and console makers typically shun backward compatibility.

Console makers are racketeers.

Judging from the pic they provide of their tablet it looks to be a Samsung display. That maybe the cause for the delay since Samsung lost in court to Apple over their tablet devices. Last thing Wikipad wants is to be involved in a lawsuit. Either way it's a cool idea for gamers, but I'm not seeing this sell very well. Madcatz or another third party will probably come out with their own tablet controllers that will universal with multiple devices.

MADPADDY 156 pts

bwgamer Samsung lost in the US courts and Germany, but if you read the whole story they have won the cases in most other countries including Korea,Japan,UK, AUS. So it isn't a clear cut as Apple would like you to think.

I kinda like the idea of adding proper videogame controls to a tablet computer. They could also pull a madcatz and create controls to fit all Tablet computers, whether they are from Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, Kindle, Asus,Rim,and even Sony. Since they all use Android or some form app store for games.

$500.00 seems reasonable as that is what most tablets cost, Except Kindle fire/and Kindle fire HD.

SDSkarface 73 pts

why are all these tablets coming out running android OS? no one wants to play Angry birds on the go..with real controls. Why not windows 8 so we can play Crysis at max settings?

obsequies 593 pts

SDSkarface why not a x86 version of linux for tablets and skip the windows 8 and directx garbage altogether

youngzen69 32 pts

Why would I want to pay 500 dollars for a Wikipad? What does it do that the PS Vita doesn't do? I mean for less money I could buy a Kindle HD, or a Nexus 7, or a Ipad mini and still have money left over. I just don't see the point of this thing.

I think this is a good idea to have a contoller on a tablet becasue tablet gaming is evolving and will be the future of mobile gaming. but the controller needs to work with any tablet i have one and wont buy a new one just for this but i would buy the controller part becasue well any tablet game with the touch screen buttons and anolog stick i just cant play

nate1222 827 pts

 Voocaro7993

It ain't a bad idea at all. But their asking price is ridiculous. I own a $450 laptop that runs most recent PC games on max settings. And a laptop can do a Hell of alot more than a tablet.

chyng85 21 pts

Love it~

Will buy it if it is available in Malaysia~

it would have been a great idea if you can just slide any tablet right in.  from the looks of it it looks like the tablet slides off, first party tablet is the only one that would work. I don't think the design is ugly, like many have said.  Seems to have some potential but for that price and just a basic tablet I much rather get and ipad or galaxy tablet or surface (fanboys, I don't care).  But in all honesty mobile gaming on a tablet really? do I really need the buttons and thumbstick for angry birds and bad piggies, even bahamuts revenge.  I think it will be a very smart move to just wait until some hacker creates a usb stick that just syncs any controller wireless be it logitech to a no name brand or a home console as some have mooded already.

vihazur 71 pts

This would be a great idea.. if tablet games weren't such crap.

advancedcaveman 30 pts

You know what else costs $500? The Open Pandora. This would be cool for emulators if it was a lot cheaper.

poopinpat 121 pts

man this thing is ugly..i would rather get that overpriced steelseries BT controller for a regular tablet than pay for this overpriced garbage.  You can get an n7 for half the price and the only drawback will be the screen size (which i actually prefer 7 inch tablets as they are perfect for documents). I wonder if this even runs jellybean...

rarson 918 pts

That looks bulky, fugly, and cheap. And it's overpriced. And "exclusively at Gamestop" means "nail in the coffin."

valium88 132 pts

doesn't matter to me really since I wount be buying one. I believe in desktops for gaming.

KratosHump3R 8 pts

Who would buy it? The same people that are buying the Ouya?

luqmanr 132 pts

KratosHump3R I don't think so, people who buy OUYA are cheapskates, LOL, it couldn't have been them.

blackace 440 pts

 luqmanr  KratosHump3R

True. I'm not buying either, so I don't know what that makes me. A miser perhaps.? It's an interesting idea though and I would have thought Apple would have brought something like this out a long time ago. I definitely wouldn't buy it from Wiki. There are a lot of IOS games that would play better with an analog stick, d-pad and some buttons. Even a mouse attachment wouldn't be a terrible idea.

surppo 35 pts

i want to hate this and while i do hate this. i wouldnt be mad if consoles turned into tablets like this. i mean theres really no reason not to like this idea its more powerful than the current gen consoles, it has real controls and the screen is huge.  the turn off is the price and the quality of most the games. but with some real support this could be something that  gamers really want imagine watching tv and gaming on commercials or letting your girl watch all the chick flicks and reality shows she wants while your killing your buddies from the same couch. i dont know about yall but an extra screen is neer a bad thing.

rarson 918 pts

 surppo

"its more powerful than the current gen consoles"

Uh, no it's not. It's powered by a Tegra 3.

With a $500 price tag, I don't see how they expect anyone to buy it. Tablet buyers are going to opt for a regular tablet, and gamers will opt for a real console.

Spartan_418 1146 pts

surppo Tablets have a long way to go before they're more powerful than consoles. The problem is that phones and tablets always try to be as light and sleek and thin as possible, and this means they can't include any kind of fans or real cooling systems.

This limit on heat puts a limit on the clock speeds of their CPUs and GPUs. You won't find any tablet with a 3.3GHz processor like the Xbox 360.

Some phones are starting to have 2GHz quad-core processors, but they become hot during use and have poor battery life.

surppo 35 pts

Spartan_418 thx for the info, but say it was more powerful than current gen or say that there was a tablet version of the 360/ps3.  would that be a bad thing, all a console needs is a screen and a controller.  all im saying is maybe console can come in different forms and im for it as long as they keep real controls.

cheamo 83 pts

Is it delayed because there is no market for it?

robertico7 40 pts

I'd rather buy a gaming laptop with the $500 instead of this.

blackace 440 pts

robertico7 I agree. Even though I already own a gaming laptop. Still, I'd buy one of the new Next Gen consoles or the next Apple IPad before I forked over $500 for this untested tablet. For anyone who's interested in getting it, let it get released first and give it a year. If it's still on store shelves and selling well with lots of games, then take a peek. Gamers ran out and bought the NeoGeo Pocket years ago and even though it was a GREAT little handheld (control was awesome) the system was dead in less then 2 years in the U.S.  The price was right thought at just $70.
