Halo 3

Halo 3... Sole Signal... okay, yeah, I'm down with that. Greg writes:

"The main source is such a powerful track, especially with the swelling strings after the first time through the melody. I knew when I first heard it that I wanted to try a remix of the track. Hope everyone enjoys my take on a few of the classic Halo themes."

This was a little different than what I expected, for a Halo mix, but in a good way... it's got gritty beats, some industrial/electro perc fx, strings, etc., but Greg really emphasizes piano, both compositionally and from a production standpoint. So, instead of a more cinematic usage, where the piano might enter here and there and be a bit more distant, it's more of a sci-fi instrumental with a consistent, deliberate structure, which I can dig just as much. Kudos for what I personally consider a relatively unorthodox approach to the source. Fishy writes:

"Phat beats, epic source, nice strings/piano samples. My only real criticism is the section with the main halo theme didn't feel as epic as it usually does the first time it enters. Ending with the piano was a cool idea. Pretty solid all around. Just as a sidenote, some of the halo music is really excellent. Moar remixes."

I actually like that Greg doesn't go for balls-to-the-wall epic and instead leans more toward a traditional song structure, because I think it's the non-obvious choice and makes the arrangement a bit more interesting. Shariq adds:

"Great percussion and percussive elements, especially around 1:30. Nice use of choir too; it's not too exposed and it gets the job done. I like the relative dryness of the piano, it sits nicely in the mix. Great stuff. Really captures the feel of the original tracks with a great, groovy spin."

Well said; I like being surprised, and while it was certainly no surprise that a Sole Signal mix was well constructed & produced, I like the more melody-centric, instrumental approach Greg took with the source material.

Love the piano used in this one, backed by that choir. I don't really remember much of the Halo's soundtrack, ironically, except Finish the Fight and Never Forget among a few others, so hearing them like this is complete justice. Loved how it starts out at a nice pace, gets a little harder around 2:45 and then drops back off into that beautiful spot at the end. Very nice.

Piano is implemented very nicely. The part around 2:45 goes slightly into "epic" territory, but it does not go overboard (which is good, as it would have changed the mood of the mix cosiderably otherwise). Nice ending.
I do find the beat a little too fast and loud, though. Slowing the mix down/doing without the beat (as Swanky said) might've been interesting.

I'd like to point out the small Halo easter egg in the song length: 3:43. Just putting that out there...

The part that finishes up right around 1:24 sent a big buzzing chill down my spine and through my legs, as did the ending. Very well done!

A lot of people might hate on it a little because it's not as "epic" as the source but I think that's what makes it really awesome. The source is a great song and it fits the game extremely well but it's not something I'd put on a playlist, your rendition was an instant add. Great work!

I don't like the beats. They feel too electronic and take away much of the more natural sound selection and atmosphere. Maybe you could try with a softer drumline or for the first two minutes, maybe you could go completely without. Otherwise, I dig this mix.

WOW. AMAZING. MOAR.
Love the percussion and the piano and just about everything. Keep it up. :)

It's good to see your recent mawwage hasn't got in the way of you making awesome music dude :)
Congrats again! (on the hitch and the mix!) :)

Definitely a solid mix well worth listening to. The grittier sound near the beginning really complements the piano and mix of instruments as a whole. Glad to see some Halo recognition on OCR!
Download this mix!
