Super Meat Boy

We don't even care about our pudding; we're going for MORE MEAT! Platforming indie sensation Super Meat Boy has gotten tons of awards, acclaim, prestige, and even a PETA-endorsed protest/parody, Super Tofu Boy, all of which is awesome news for deserving composer Danny B. On Monday, the special edition of the soundtrack shall be unleashed upon the only-partially-suspecting world, and we've got not one but TWO advance ReMixes off of it, from some familiar and uber-talented faces. First off, following on the heels of 2010's awesome 'Power of the Meat' SMB mix from Poolside comes Benjamin Briggs with his own take on some of the game's USDA Angus musics:

"Super Meat Boy. Calling it a "phenomenon" is an understatement. Calling it "legendary" would be selling it short. If you called it "one of the greatest video games ever made", you'd merely be GETTING WARMER. Danny Baranowsky, the game's (super-sexy) composer, is a dear old friend of mine, and we used to exchange WIPs and general silliness on a daily basis back when I was new(er) to the community. When he contacted me about remixing a song of my choice from Super Meat Boy, to be included on the special edition of the soundtrack, I was extremely honored, and naturally I obliged.

The chiptune track 'Meat Spin' appealed to me on two very distinct levels: 1. It's a chiptune (derp) and 2. at the time I had been listening to a ton of deadmau5 and PrototypeRaptor, and was at a point where I was EXTREMELY eager to start putting out music that evoked the same energy and general punchiness. The chords and melodies of Danny's track immediately stood out to me as a perfect foundation for my first attempt at capturing "that" sound, and consequently this is the first time I've utilized gain pumping ("sidechaining") as a production technique. Stevo Bortz (aka Level 99), did me a huge solid by recording the guitar chord heard at the very end of the remix, and Jordan Aguirre (aka bLiNd) also helped me immensely by inspiring me to push my mixing/mastering skills to a new level.

Other than that, I'm going to let the remix speak for itself. I sincerely hope you all love it."

Hyperbole? Not even... Sidechaining is immediately evident as the disco-chip-funk kicks in and never lets go, with hooks aplenty and an infectious downbeat that's pleased to meat you. I love the non-sequitir guitar chord ending - Stevo's little cameo was a good call - and the production does indeed shine a bit brighter & punch a bit harder than Ben's former stuff. Super catchy, instantly likable, deceptively addictive... sounds like the game itself. Great work from BB; looking forward to the full special edition release on Monday!

Okay, so funny enough, the first time I heard this wasn't even on OCR, it was in my car when someone from my college's radio station thought it would be a nice segment tune. So imagine my surprise when I heard this about a week later on the site. :P Honestly, I love this track. I can't explain it, but it's just one of those damn catchy beats that makes you want to groove a little in your seat. This just gets in your brain and doesn't let go no matter what. So good and so catchy.

I gotta say, after several weeks, this may have moved up ot my *very* favorite remix on the site! I swear, *EVERY* time I listen to it, I feel like dancing. And not just Elaine-dancing or club-dancing, but actually busting out the break-dancing and Robot moves.
Everything about it, to me, is perfect. It has great pacing, moves seamlessly between sounds... just a fantastic track, that's all there is to say, really.

This. The remix made me djp within the first 5 seconds. In fact, I'm currently djping to it, and I've listened to it numerous times since I downloaded it.
As some of the previous posters mentioned, it's just wonderful how well the chiptune elements gel with the rest of the song.

Here I am, coding away on my team's end of college project, the OCRemix youtube channel singing away in my ears while I listen half-heartedly, focused on my work.
Then this song comes up, and I don't even realize that I start dancing in the middle of class. So, to avoid embarassment, I set the song back to the start, pull my earphones out and let it blast out of the computer's speakers.
Cue more dancing, this time not from me.
This song is epic. You need to remix the rest of the game's soundtrack in this style, and name the resulting album "Super Beat Boy". Guaranteed club hit.

Oh damn. This is pretty damn epic. Strong bass presence, really infectious and groovy, not to mention music that fits with the times - not like my music XD.
I heard alot of different versions of this and its pretty cool to see this come to full fruition. Possibly my fav mix of chthonics - sorry, Ben Briggs - ties with red sphere blue sphere for best briggs remix :P
Nice work man.

good to see mr. briggs has grown musically though since then. it's not much like his old works, i think, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. bottomline is its still awesome

2 artists I've been listening to a lot recently: PrototypeRaptor and Ben Briggs. Now here's a tune by one in the style of the other. And what's not to like about this? Sweet chippy-sounds and a stomping beat, great effects, even a little slower-tempo break to keep things fresh. Moar please!

this is really good stuff!
I especially love the epic signature solos - no one does it like chth. I mean benjamin.
also I'm a sucker for dat chord progression. 25 or 6 to 4 much?
