Riot: No plans to develop LAN for home use

League of Legends developer dispels rumors of LAN mode for offline play at home or in LAN center is in the works.

On the eve of Riot Games' League of Legends Season 2 World Championships Grand Final between Azubu Forst and the Taipei Assassins, Riot announced it was developing a LAN client for tournaments, which would also be in use for the matchup Saturday night. At the time it was not said whether the client would be for major tournaments only, or also for all League of Legends players. Now it is known it will only be used for the former.

Riot VP of eSports Dustin Beck took to Twitter today to dispel the rumors. “We built an offline solution for the Finals for the pros to be protected from Internet connectivity issues”, Beck tweeted. “There are no plans to develop a LAN mode for offline play at home / LAN centers. Just wanted to clarify for everyone.”

The risk of creating a LAN client for use at home or at LAN centers is one quite large to developers that run online-only games such as Riot Games' League of Legends and Blizzard's multiple franchises under Battle.Net. These risks range from the piracy on a wide-scale for all previous and future iterations of each title, and the high-potential of hackers and cheaters causing major disruptions in these communities.

"Develop"??? You're developing it for friggin tornament mode!!!! All you would have to do is put a tiny lil button in server options that says Lan and you're good to go.

 

Usually companies don't input Lan because then Pirates can play the multiplayer component on their home PC's.

 

But when that game is Free to Play I don't see what they're missing out on, all I see is a petty company that won't give the gamers what they want for the sole reason they want it.

 

I hate LoL but there was no reason Lan play had to die except for the sole reason that these companies wanted us to have less freedom to play they're games

I understand where Riot is coming from, but seriously, who would pirate a f2p game? that's like pirating freeware lol. I guess it's to keep people from hacking more than anything.

The reason and only reason why there will be no public LAN is because of the private Starcraft: Brood War Leagues in Korea that blizzard saw 0 money from.  Riot is just trying to protect their product, it's also the reason why SC2 is online only. D=

I get that it's difficult to introduce LAN now, but I'm pretty sure that LAN support is not a general no-go for the genre. You mostly need to be afraid of people using their own servers, but I'm pretty sure that a properly designed game doesn't really need to fret about that. In LoL people would probably find ways to unlock everything for free as long as they don't need to use the public servers, thus Riot would loose money. Dota 2 on the other hand doesn't require you to unlock stuff in the first place, so I don't really see them missing out on too much. Even if there were private networks/leagues that might just boost the longevity of the game and lower server cost for Valve. I'm pretty sure the broad majority would still play on the official servers, when possible.

Yeah i can understand why they wouldnt do it.  I mean for it to even be feasible they would have to store player profiles client side right ? or else how would you have access to your champs and what not. That causes a major vulnerability that's just begging to be exploited and will be. There's no way to defend against that.  Also hackers would just figure out how to unlock everything in the lan client and stop playing and more importantly buying  on riots servers. Hell they would probably start setting up their on private serevrs to play on. The game may be F2P but they still make a ton of money and releasing a lan client would most certainly ruin that. People need to understand that its not that they dont wont there to be a lan client. Its just not practical at all.

 Dudeman315 exactly. Do people really think that F2P games are made so these companies can not make money? Like they are really spending all this money to make and maintain a game out of the kindness of their hearts. Its a given that they want money and theres nothing wrong with that.

Oh, god, that last section really makes me glad that I'm strictly a singleplayer gamer. What with all the fuss and (alleged) risks, the joy of gaming seems take second priority. Most gamers thinks LAN is great, but as always it seems, what gamers like, companies dislike.

I have my laptop with me at work, but I can't get wifi here. If I could play LoL and get paid for it all day I would be a pro by now. I would love that, but I understand why it would create so many issues.

Even if they don't release the LAN server to the general public, I think it's real cool that they developed one to support tournament play.  That shows a great level of commitment to their core base of gamers.

Lan version would need all your info stored on individual computers instead of server side, that'd make it very easy to hack all the stuff online and offline... I have no use for it so doesn't bother me.

LAN would only be able to go in and create a offline profile and play as any character, like in the original DOTA...

 

Lan would be very useful if you are have home lan parties and bigger lan parties where you make tournaments

I am assuming Riot is just worried that having a LAN-capable client would make it easier for hackers to reverse engineer the server responses and create certain tools to cheat on the non-LAN games. Although I think such effort on the developer part is always futile.

 

As others have pointed out, piracy shouldn't be an issue with a F2P game, at least not in the traditional sense.

 sasami_adachi I doubt that piracy is as much of a concern here as protecting the integrity of the game.  Keeping the playing field level is an even bigger challenge when your game is multiplayer-only.

But they don't work exceptionally well unless they're really stripped of fast action abilities since your command and movement as well as actions per second will be severely diminished.

 S0ulReav3r The LoL client everyone has is only a small part of the game, server files are the bigger part of it, and it's required to run the game. If LAN mode is made, the server part needs to be combined with the client, and in hackers' hands, it could be reverse engineered. After knowing the inner workings of the server, hackers could have some serious fun. Lots of money is involved despite a f2p game, otherwise LoL would not be running.

 RippleLaser so what you are saying is that hackers might make a LoL clone ?? or run their own servers ? I don't see how is this bad for a f2p game with large player base like Lol. no really if its about "stealing" skins a friend of mine changed the normal skins with other like the ones you buy. I still don't get it, I mean Lan is what started cybersports and all.

 hector530 DOTA 2 is free to play too, but it's not only getting LAN, Valve has said dedicated servers will be a good possibility for dedicated hosted custom matches and mods.

 

LAN, Custom games, custom mods, dedicated servers, free to play. What's Riot's excuse?

 

DOTA 2 is capable of allowing you to host community made RPG's and stuff on a dedicated server kind of like TF2 servers.
