Minecraft more popular on Xbox Live than Modern Warfare 3
4J Studios' open-world creation game tallied more unique users than latest Call of Duty or any other game on Xbox 360 online platform for week of October 15.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is already a breakout hit. It has sold over 4 million copies since launch in May, driving $80 million in revenue. Now, it has hit another milestone. The latest Xbox Live activity chart reveals the game was the most popular title on Xbox Live for the week of October 15.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition tallied more unique users on Xbox Live during the week than big-budget retail releases like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Borderlands 2, Halo: Reach, and Battlefield 3.
Not surprisingly, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was also the best-selling Xbox Live Arcade title of the week, outperforming the likes of The Walking Dead, Sonic Adventure 2, and Trials Evolution. Specific sales figures were not released, but in August, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was selling at a clip of 17,000 copies per day, amassing revenue of $340,000 every 24 hours.
Upon launch on May 9, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition became profitable in just one hour, selling more than 400,000 copies during its first 24 hours on sale, and breaking all previous Xbox Live arcade digital sales records. The game reached 1 million in sales in just five days.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios, the Scotland-based shop that built Xbox Live Arcade titles Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, and Banjo-Tooie. It retails for $20. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review.
The beginning of the end of that worn-ragged franchise, I hope.
Is it just me, or does "codblops" sound scatological?
Even as boring as COD has become, I really don't see how. Minecraft is a boring, ugly waste of time.
They call the graphics style "retro", when NES games had way better graphics. An insult to retro games.
Whether it changes or not congrats to Mojang for this, when they started out I never expected it to get so big on 2 platforms
Minecraft is the kind of game you can keep coming back to. Once people play a map in COD for the billionth time, and are all "ooh, COD 436 is coming out soon!" their desire to play it more diminishes.
With Minecraft, you'll play it until it's boring, then end up coming back to it later and starting over again and it feels fresh. It's limited by your imagination. I've personally had about 5 "ages" of Minecraft where I'd start in a new world and build an empire with a vast network of buildings and bases and mines, and store up thousands of materials and tools and think, "I'm done." just to go back to it a few months later and start all over again with new ideas.
While this is absolutely great to see a non sheepish game over the most sheepish of all time, it's only going to last until the next COD comes out in what, a month or so?
tightwad34 The sad part is that you can come out with a game called Call of Duty : Laundry Folder and people will undoubtedly buy it.
666Rich666
Ha ha, so true.
666Rich666 tightwad34 Holy $hit!!! when does LF come out!?
666Rich666 tightwad34 I'd only buy it BECAUSE it's called Call of Duty: Laundry Folder.
That might change come next month...
I hope some developers take note of the fact that solid gameplay has "headshotted" franchise name and grafix. I think there is a lesson in that for them.
Astonishing, for a game available only on LIVE. This must make PS3 owners (and I have both 360 and PS3) wish for this game on their system, however, with the low price points of consoles, the MINE(craft) VS YOURS ought to be over. It is time for everyone to get the other console.
farcorners
I'm a PS3 guy, but I am not interested in Minecraft one bit. I can usually see the appeal behind things, but I don't with this. I know it's a thinking man's game which I like, but I don't see anything that will really make this game stand out to me. I know 10 million+ can't be wrong, though.
tightwad34 farcorners It's not really a thinking man's game though. If you like(d) Legos, you'll like minecraft. You just kind of wander around building junk with other junk you collect. The monsters and weapons are just icing. Redstone circuits are pretty cool and complicated, but they're a small part of the whole.
Supremely addictive to me, 'cause I loved Legos and building junk but I can understand how it wouldn't appeal to everyone. Just 'cause 10 million people like it doesn't mean everyone should. ;)
farcorners i haven't a clue why they would be envious, i have every console, and a game pc, and prefer games on consoles, but some games you just cant beat on pc (modifiable games) and MC can practically run on a calculator. vanilla MC is fun but the true sandbox lies on pc. ~equivalent exchange, BuildCraft, IndustrialCraft ect~
Gee, I wonder why?
Minecraft is a great game, but I find it a little odd that this 360 version has become so hugely popular.
I'm guessing a very large percentage of these 360 Minecraft players also own PCs that are perfectly capable of playing Minecraft, and in comparison to the PC version, 360 Minecraft is tiny, and severely limited in its gameplay.
Impressive. But for me, few games were able to make me put down MW 3 for more than a couple of weeks. Here's hoping Halo 4 and BLOPS 2 will change that.
vader501stpretty sad to hear that seeing as MW3 was just and update of MW2. I personally prefer BF3, but neither game is that great. The one game that keeps me coming back is Dark Souls and FIFA
The Gamespot review of this game should be rewritten now that creative mode and other features are out.
...I love the game... BUT WHAT THE HELL IS THE GOAL OF IT??? I guess an infinite LEGO sandbox doesn't need further purpose than constructing... maybe it's just me?
Getbacktogaming No lie, it can get boring time to time. Friends really make the game a lot funner.
@Getbacktogaming I did get to a point like that in MC. Then I started playing survival mode and just having the goal of not dying makes it a LOT more interesting. To build a world over many weeks including a nice castle and the works, then get ganked by a spider in a lapse of concentration and lose it all... its a different game.
Wow, maybe there is still hope in the industry. Today was a good day.
Good for you, 4J. I only wish the same could be said for Perfect Dark xbla. I wish these guys would talk to Crytek and do HD Timesplitters remakes for them...
Splendid news.
Halo>Elder Scrolls>Minecraft>Forza>any LEGO game>any Nintendo game>CoD
It is certainly better than MW3, that's for sure.
I was dumb enough to try out Minecraft for the first time when I had a serious illness recently that kept me away from work from two weeks. Now I'm addicted to the damn thing :P
When I first played Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition trial version, I will admit, I did not get it and it felt kind of boring. But then 5 hours of playing the trial later, I got hooked to the core of game, which was building things. I decided to buy the game later on. From the time I bought it until the time the 1.8.2. update came out, I have played the game for over 150 hours. After the update, I am still playing the game, adding about 30 more hours of game play.
I recommend this game only if you have real creative mind, local or online friends to play with, and a youtube account with a capture device or video camera to showcase your work (building for yourself only can be really boring and pointless at times). It is a great game to play. It may seem simple and boring at first, but once you get into making bigger things like mansions, castles, etc on the game, it can be addicting. The survival part of the game adds some objectives to keep the player moving and not stopping, while creative mode gives you the option to build bigger things faster. I did not think it would be worth the $20, but I was wrong after playing close to 200 hours of game play already.
It is good to see an indie company get this popular on a small game. It inspires me to appreciate the small things because the small things can lead to big successes.
Personally I don't play it because it's just one of those games that go on forever with no purpose or end and it's so time consuming, but I'm glad an indie game is kicking Kraptivision's ass.
Well, at least until BO2 comes out, those will be dark days indeed with nothing in the gaming news except how many records it's breaking and how many mindless 12 year olds buy it.
Daian Yeah, I couldn't really see the appeal either with no real means to an end of the game. I was never into legos as a kid either, so maybe that is why.
12 year olds don't have jobs silly! Well, maybe in some parts of the world.
I still don't own the game and have no plans of paying $20 for it. I don't really see the thrill in this game. Reminds me of The Sims. Very popular game, but not much point to it. Just seems like a waste of a lot of time.
blackace Judgment based on assumptions can be very deceiving.
Thats cause MW3 sucks ass!
So now we can't play Minecraft anymore cuz its hip right?? That's how being an American consumer is right??
ziproy Who told you we were all hipsters?
ziproy Isn't it more likely that more people will start to play it because it's hip?
Considering 2011's COD8 : MW3 was created after the ACTIVISION's destruction of Infinity Ward (the creators of COD).
Considering that Raven software, Sledgehammer, and Treyarch pitched in with what tiny fragment of IW was left at ACTIVISION to make COD8 : MW3....this isn't all that surprising.
@SolidTy I don't think 3arc was involved with MW3 since they were focusing on BO2.
Notice the headline said more "THAN" MW3. Most of you, if you were writing this story, would've said more "THEN" MW3. You basically don't know how to use than and then correctly, and it drives me mad. Minecraft is really good on 360. I haven't downloaded the new update yet but I've heard it makes the game a lot better.
Are you reffering to a particular post?
x-2tha-z Uhhh... mkay, thanks... For that... It's nice to know that the article has proper grammar... I guess...
x-2tha-z ok than
x-2tha-z
Even worse thing that drives ME mad is:
"I would of" instead of "I would've" (-__-) makes me worried for today's students in public schools smh
PSYCHOV3N0M x-2tha-zbecome an english teacher??
@PSYCHOV3N0M @x-2tha-z It is actually "I would have"!
and a well done to all involved with Minecraft, it's an excellent game, I personally find it very relaxing and enjoyable to play, especially when you come up with a grand design and invite your friends into your game to see it :)
Having said that MW3 is the worst COD i have played, from spawns to lag and some horrible maps. I think most people in the COD community are done with it by now and are looking forward to BO2. I know I certainly am!
Make a Feedbackula episode on this topic!!!!!!!
It was about time for CoD to get a competitor. But I wasn't expecting Minecraft to be that competitor. O.o
