Nintendo sees no danger in releasing numerous Mario games

Nintendo of America president says company will not "kill the goose that lays the golden egg" because each entry offers something new.

Nintendo is not fearful that continually releasing new Mario games will come back to bite the company. Speaking to Games Industry International, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime responded to a question regarding whether or not there is a danger in using Nintendo's intellectual properties, like Mario, too much.

"I would say categorically, no," the executive responded. "And that's because our developers, starting with Mr. Miyamoto and going through the entire EAD development organization, they understand the power of our franchises, and they understand that the only reason these franchises have the power that they do is that they have to make sure that each subsequent edition is unique, different, and offers something new."

Fils-Aime stressed that this must be the case. If Nintendo fails to create innovative sequels, then there could be problems, he admitted.

"They know that if they don't do that, we'll kill the golden goose that lays the golden egg," he continued. "So it's something they are highly cognizant of, and even the executives on the business side, we hold that IP very dearly to make sure that every edition in the series is foundationally sound."

In the past 12 months, Nintendo has released a host of Mario-focused games. These include Super Mario 3D Land and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games in November 2011; Mario Kart 7 in December 2011; Mario Party 9 during March 2012; Mario Tennis Open in May 2012; and New Super Mario Bros. 2 in August 2012. Upcoming Mario titles include Paper Mario: Sticker Star and New Super Mario Bros. U, both of which are set to arrive during November 2012.

All the New Super Mario bros games sure look a like, only new items set them apart. Now Super Mario 3d Land looks like New Super Mario Bros and Sticker Star doesn't look like Paper Mario 64 or TTYD. I'd rather see mario games go back to their roots. Go back to 3d Mario roots, Paper Mario roots and Mario Party roots. Nintendo are repeating the wrong games. Stop repeating new super mario bros and start repeating the games that were good like Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario and Mario Party.

I have no problem with Nintendo releasing new Mario games.

I do have a problem with Nintendo releasing NEW Super Mario Bros .games. The rest of the franchise (Paper Mario, Kart, 3D Marios, Mario & Luigi, Party, Olympics) is still brimming with creativity, but the 2D New Super Mario Bros. series is stagnant and repetitive.

New SMB U looked amazing in screenshots, but finally seeing it in action, it's still the same game we've played three times already. They can do better than this.

EdwardoMario16 I agree. I was hoping for Galaxy 3 as Mario's first Wii-U outing. Galaxy 1 and 2 are the best platformers ever made!

I agree. I find that New Super Mario Bros games are just for easy money. There's already more New Super Mario bros games than there are 3D Mario games( not counting Mario 3D Land).  It's also ruining the other Mario games as well. I want to see 3d Mario games that feel more like Mario Sunshine and 64. Before we know it Paper Mario and the 3D Mario games are going to looked like New Super Mario Bros.

Flint247 515 pts

All the other games are good, but I feel the New Super Bros. series is what is causing the "repetitiveness" in Mario platformers. While New Super Mario Bros. U looks great and better than the 3DS version, I do hope they go back to the 3D roots like Galaxy and 3D Land.

They will definitely, I expect to see a trailer of it at E3. I do hope that they decide to change up the New Super Mario Bros. games since there were other 2D Mario titles that had very different gameplay (like Super Mario Bros. 2).

abHS4L88  Flint247 mario 2 wasnt really mario 2, it was doki doki panic or something. the real mario 2 was released in japan, and its friggin hard!

anyway, i dont see them going back to a mario game that wasnt even really a mario game.

abHS4L88 2043 pts

I'm aware of that, but it's a good place to look if they do want to change up the gameplay. Some of Mario's most innovative titles (aside from the 3D entries) have been the ones where Bowser wasn't the main bad guy.

UniPelger 5 pts

3D roots?, the main super mario bros series was 2D and I think that's where it works best, SMB and SMB3 are great, new super mario bros might as well be called "super mario bros 4" (or 5 if you count world as smb4).

kuda001 167 pts

The games themselves are different rather it's the fact that Mario is in them that bothers people. They can develop innovative games but they include Mario & Co to appeal to consumers. They desperately need third party support however and although this is painful for me acquiring Bayonetta was a smart move.

superbuuman 54 pts

They already have for me :P ..not talking about the Mario appeared games, but specifically NSMBU ....just get the feeling of too many of the same...NSMB Wii, NSMB DS,  NSMB 2 3DS. Given NSMB2 3DS a miss & will be doing the same with NSMBU

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 was fantastic. But please keep developing new worlds and surroundings, and if anything, a more open world experience would be nice. Mario platformers are the best, and i don't see any reason not to keep the franchise going, but Nintendo should be aware that we're not just gonna buy whatever, at some point people can't take it anymore. New Super Mario Bro. 2 does seem uninterresting to me. The focus on coin collecting, and the fact that the graphics is no better than on the DS - that just dissappoints me

Why mario games can't be more difficult? my little sister finished New Super Mario Bros 2 with 145 lives lol (she's 11), is almost impossible to see the "gameover" screen like the old days lol, i was playing it yesterday and got bored after 1 hour because the only medium challenge there is collect coins, is really sad that mario games are designed now to just faceroll the content, the mario franchise is for extreme casuals and kids now why not make the game for gamers too? it would be good to see options for every type of person in the franchise, sorry this is just my opinión

I haven't really played the 2D Mario games lately so I can't say much in regards to that, but the 3D Mario games are more challenging than the more recent 2D entries.

Just because Mario is on the cover doesn't mean each game is the same. Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, and the many Mario sports games all offer totally different gameplay. The only similar thing is Mario is in each game - besides that they are totally  different experiences.

I think they do need to be careful about having too many "New Super Mario Bros." games, but otherwise I'm definitely not burned out on Mario yet.

I do hope they revisit a new handheld Mario Golf game soon.  The GBA version with its RPG aspects was pretty awesome.  I'm surprised they haven't done a proper follow up.

Iwata stated that they don't plan on releasing anymore 2D Mario games for the rest of this generation (which is interesting since the 8th generation has barely started), and if they do, it probably won't be for another 3-4 years.

JunoWalker 36 pts

Of course they don't care. Mario is all they have aside for the DS. If Nintendo didn't have their handheld line, they would have been out of business in the gaming industry long ago or would've just become a designer/publisher. It's sad that they bank so much off of 1 thing with a different paint job each time.

abHS4L88 2043 pts

 JunoWalker

What are you talking about? All their consoles (except for the Virtual Boy) have done well enough (at least) to allow Nintendo to move to the next generation. And if Mario was their ONLY source of revenue besides the DS, then there's no way they would've been able to develop this long, but no, they have other strong franchises that sell very well too.

JunoWalker 36 pts

abHS4L88 Nothing Nintendo makes sells as well as Mario, this is fact. Also fact, is that the Gameboy and DS line of portable game systems kept Nintendo alive when Gamecube flopped and Sony was King with PS2 and Microsoft became the home of shooters with XBox. Sony has made the world's best selling home console system with PS2. Xbox's controller, the s version, was the best to play shooters on. These are facts.

abHS4L88 2043 pts

 JunoWalker

It still sold well enough, about 2.4m less than the XBox. Of course nothing sells as well as Mario, but doesn't mean they don't have other franchises that sell incredibly well, like Pokemon and Zelda, and many of their other franchises too have loyal followings like Fire Emblem, Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong and now Kid Icarus.

JunoWalker 36 pts

abHS4L88 Pokemon is the reason Gameboy saved their sorry asses!!!

JunoWalker 36 pts

abHS4L88 Another thing Nintendo does to shoot themselves in the foot is not using a media standard for their disk size and format. None of their systems could play DVDs or Blue-Rays. The new XBox might play Blue-Rays and Sony's PS3 already does. When PS1 launched it was also a CD player. PS2 was a DVD player on top of that. PS3 is now also a Blue-Ray player. XBox was also a DVD player if you bought the DVD remote. XBOX360 for a bit of time had an HDDVD drive you could buy for it. Nintendo has done nothing about this. I personally bought my PS3 because it could play all formats on one device. XBox can't play Blue-Ray and Wii can't play anything other than Wii game or Gamecube games. WiiU can only play WiiU/ Wii games. This system cost as much as an new PS3 or XBox, but can't do as much... That's awesome!

I want to continue this discussion but I have to go, but this article discusses everything I was going to say (and sooooo much more).

http://gengame.net/2012/07/wii-u-will-not-be-behind-next-generation/

JunoWalker 36 pts

abHS4L88 WOW, your article has a ton of merit to it. I already knew that the gaming industry was getting too big for itself. I came up with a solution for this problem that other day myself. My solution was to make a console that is basically a PS3 with newer guts, a completely redone OS, and then have the dev costs for games for this system being only double what they were for PS2. I like having the HDMI, Blue-Ray/ DVD, Internet access, online stores for movies and games, plus having some online social community is good to.

The dev cots were too big for the industry's own good. Your article proved that. It also proved that, games don't need to cost tons of money to make, to be fun or enjoyable. If a game is fun and enjoyable, then it won't matter if it looks like real life.

I would be happy if game devs started making games like they did for the PS2 era. It was a mind set that made the gaming industry a better place to work. There were also more games being made, simply because there were more dev studios and something called "B-Games". Not every game has to be a huge AAA game. If the gaming industry can go back to how it was 6 years ago, then it might not destroy itself with greed.

bubba_1988 77 pts

JunoWalker  abHS4L88 Yes totally agree with you, for me the PS2 era  was the golden age of gaming. There were so many great games. For example we saw three GTA games!

In regards to the article I posted, the funny thing was that it was someone who was trying to prove Nintendo's faults and for some reason posted this article.

Since it's an excellent article that one really cannot argue with, I use it to see if someone truly is an open minded person.

Haven't played a mario game since Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. After playing that, every other game is way below it's league.

JunoWalker 36 pts

Alpr1010 That's partly because that Mario game was co-developed by Squaresoft. Nintendo made some handheld games in the same fashion, but those were not nearly as good or original.

Warhawk_ 11 pts

Sorry Nintendo, I like you and the Mario series is my most liked platform series but you're full of it. You made three NSMB games that are almost the same as the original one from the DS with some minor changes in each of them and the fact that you have to make each of them on different consoles (ex rather then making a new Mario 2D game on the DS after the first NSMB you had to make it for the Wii to have people buy the system) to make fans buy them is abusing it too much.

Yeah I know Mario fans don't care and the reason why Nintendo can get away from this but I'm being honest here when I say that Nintendo really is milking Mario to death.

abHS4L88 2043 pts

 Warhawk_

They're not releasing it on other platforms to force people to buy it, it's part of not releasing too much of the same entry. Not really a good idea to release a new 2D Mario on the Wii or DS when the next gen handheld is already out and the console is on its way. If you're fine with 3D Mario games mostly appearing only once per platform (Galaxy being the only exception) then why is the 2D Mario series any different?

Warhawk_ 11 pts

 abHS4L88

Yeah but come on did Nintendo really have to make a NSMB for the Wii for example? I mean you go from Galaxy to this which was a huge downgrade and the fact that the game was expensive even though it looked like a DS game. Then you have NSMB 2 which looks like the other ones but nope it has to be on the 3DS to force you to buy it.

If it was really different and I mean different in everything then it would be a good reason to but a 3DS but it looks like the DS game. The one on the Wii U doesn't look any better. Sure the backgrounds looks different and it's in HD but other then that it's the same game. If the music, art style, and gameplay was actually new and not just minor things then that would be awesome. I mean actually "NEW"

abHS4L88 2043 pts

 Warhawk_

The Wii one was actually revolutionary since it was the first time multiplayer was introduced in a Mario game that worked really well and was lots of fun. Yeah the visuals were rather modest, Tezuka was a bit ashamed by this after he saw what Retro busted out with Donkey Kong.

If you love 2D Mario, then the 3DS had more reasons than NSMB2 for to go get one. Plus would you rather have had 6 2D Mario games in the past 6 years on the same platform or 4 across 4 different ones?

The 3DS version doesn't really change things up, but the Wii U version has already been stated to be much bigger (like Super Mario World), featuring different modes for different kinds of gamplay along with the asymmetric gameplay and the MiiVerse integration.

I do agree that they should refocus the 2D Mario gameplay, maybe create new versions of Super Mario Bros 2 and Yoshi's Island or just use those ideas to drastically change up the gameplay.

Warhawk_ 11 pts

 abHS4L88

I would of liked to see a sequel for a 2D Mario game on a ds rather then it had to be on a Wii. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that I want six 2D Mario games on the DS but making a sequel that looked and played almost like the first game that was on the DS but putting it for the Wii felt like milking then effort.

Yeah the game did have multiplayer (Though it did have problems) but at the end if they wanted to make a 2D Mario game on the Wii they could of made the game very different instead of a minor upgrade to NSMB. The Wii could of done much more but it still felt like a DS game. And the same goes with the ones on the 3DS and Wii-U. I do agree with you on the last parts about Yoshi's Island. That would be interesting

Lykanthropie 19 pts

both nsmb games for wii and ds are boring, and i am sure the 3ds and wiius will be too, but the real reason not buying them are the first 2 which are just not good mario games at all. and why is it always MARIO BROS - Mario World 1+2 are one of the best platformers ever, the innovation between both was giantaic, Even the artist style was completly different and got most of the power the snes had. Also Moving and contrrolling is so much better then in those lame mario bros. games with the same lame controlling like they did in the 80s. Donkey Kong Country Returns felt really nice, controlls are perfect and really close to the original, but evrything different felt good too.. Maybe it would be good to see a new Mario World from retro studios.

The NSMB Series is nothing more than a money maker for nintendo - guess both sold over 25 or 30 million copies, but the new nsmb games looking even closer to what everyone knows about mario worlds. I think its just lame that those games not even as good as the games you could play 20 years ago. would be nice to see a real innovaticve mario 2d platformer with controls at least at good as they are in both mario world games and maybe some new artistics would be great too, not evry mario level have to look the same, but from one game to the other, they all seems to have nearly the same kind of artistcs, would be nice to see some new mario like artistics, like we had with mario world 2.

this is the reason I have true hatred for nintendo, I just feel they just abuse what power they have rather than to build something entirely new they just keep rehashing the same dull formulas over and over with mario, zelda, metroid and pokemon I just find sickening

Sigil-otaku 129 pts

JJB03 But that was exactly the point, it's not the same old formula altogether. It's not like playing Uncharted where at best each sequel will polish the graphics minorly and add very little other than blowing up bigger vehicles. Coming from a none Mario fan (but a fan of zelda, metroid and pokemon which are less abused) I'd say they do change up the style enough for each game but you have to be dumb to think they'd change so much they eventually are unrecognizable. Fan loyalty is only maintained by staying somewhat loyal to the formula, just look at the rage surrounding Diablo 3 forums. You don't make sequels for complainers who want something new, they are for the fans who are still interested but at least Nintendo does add changes / new elements.

Mario I can accept your criticism somewhat since he treads the ground a lot more and has to stay to the fundamentals still but just Metroid has gone from 2D to FPS to 3D action genre mashup. If you like the franchises enough you'll stick around, if you don't then you don't even need to buy every one of t hem, I don't own every F-zero or every Metroid but I'll play them when they make ones that are of interest. If you find it sickening it's because your not a real fan of that game much, changes are bound to cause frustration (just look at the Diablo 3 example, they can't change anything anymore without constant rage) so you either like the franchise and play it or you don't, no big loss either way as not all of them are as recycled as you think thanks to the new twists they add. Pokemon for example is just a natural progression, I don't see how it's sickening if I like collecting and raising cool monsters for them to add a new lot to find that I can choose whether I want to raise them ones or not.

JJB03 It's the reason why i stopped buying Mario games after the 1st galaxy game. it was good, but not Mario World good. It's time to move on Nintendo, can you at least import some of your best selling Japanese games to NA? You know the ones you think Westerners won't understand? Trust us, we understand more than you think.

I'm sorry but I'm through with Mario since Mario Galaxy. I've even tried the 1st New Super and ended up bored. The best Mario games, I mean, the games that honour Mario as a platform adventure are Super Mario World 1 and 2, and 64. After these, is just "Mario milk"... sometimes sweet, sometimes sour...

jasongm 39 pts

franzito Agreed. You can tell back then Nintendo cared for their games, today it just looks like they are releasing a Mario title and it lacks "something" that the old days had..

electronic_eye 36 pts

Endless mario games is one of the main reasons i have very little to no interest in or respect for nintendo products in general. Sure they may make a few changes w/ each iteration, and there are a few nint. Games that have caught my eye over the years (pretty much all have been 3rd party) but in the end, just like w/ madden, I grew tired of all the milking long, long ago and haven't owned a nint system since the snes.

glimpus 105 pts

 electronic_eye since the snes?  shame.

electronic_eye Seems like Nintendo just can't get that "Touch" it used to have, but then again Nintendo isn't the only system out anymore thanks to Microsoft and Sony who took most of Nintendo's market and of course 3rd party support.
