Miyamoto working on new, original game

By Eddie Makuch

In new interview, Mario creator reveals he's at work on an "undisclosed original title."

Legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto was the center of much attention recently, as speculation about his retirement ran wild following an interview with Wired last month. Nintendo countered by stressing Miyamoto was not retiring, and now it's clear he's not only staying with the company, but also working on an original game.

Miyamoto recently gave an interview to the Associated Press (as spotted by Zoomin Games), where it was revealed that in addition to a new Pikmin game for the Wii U and Luigi's Mansion 2 for the 3DS, Miyamoto is at work on a new property. Zoomin refers to this project as an "undisclosed original title."

Explaining his development mentality (but not revealing anything about the new game), Miyamoto said, "People have come to expect a lot from me. This certainly makes me feel some pressure. But if you ask me, 'Is it too much pressure to come out with something new?' I have to say no, I'm enjoying myself. But when I make something, I always try to do my best."

For more on the projects Miyamoto is openly working on, check out GameSpot's coverage of Pikmin Wii U and Luigi's Mansion 2.

Has to be awesome. Hope he puts a lot of effort into it. Can't wait to find out what it is.

He understands what makes gameplay fun. It really doesn't matter what the game is, i'm sure it will be awesome.

Miyamoto, you are awesome, we all know it. So create an amazing new IP and then, get straight into another. Thats the main thing thats been missing from nintendo since Pikmin is new IP's, I'd love to see a bunch for the Wii-U and perhaps nintendo would accelerate into greatness once again

Miyamoto will definitly create something awesome, he has always been developing new concepts, and whats great is that they original from his life experience, from Adventures as a kid turning into Zelda, to having a dog, then a cat leading to Nintendogs/ + Cats, and even your usual Gardening leading to Pikmin, its gonna be awesome to see what new concept Miyamoto will, bear with me, 'Gamify' from his life experience next :D

I cant wait for some previews or sneak peaks. it seems to me people have a short memory both of the mario galaxies were great so was donkey kong. so was mario kart also the new mario for 3ds. the problem nintendo has isn't the quality of there games. but the number they actually have on each console. the fact is there the best first party developer period they just need some third party help.

Miyamoto is a brilliant designer, certainly. He creates original content in terms of structure and genre quite often (Legend of Zelda series notwithstanding), but focuses much less than most when it comes to creating a new story and characters. Mario has been applied to a lot of scenarios, for example. RPGs, sports games, platformers, puzzles, and pretty much every genre short of a GTA game have been utilized in the series. However, the characters and their design remain the same, with a few extra ones added in that enjoy minimal to moderate attention. Will be interesting to see what character he comes up with now.

@ The_Dragon_Born I agree 100%. The average age of gamers is always on the rise, and from what I've heard, the average age of a gamer is more than old enough to play a Mature rated game (17+). It's time for Nintendo to give its older audiences some love. Yes, they will alienate younger audiences, but if we've learned anything from Call of Duty, Halo, Starcraft, Dark Souls, etc. it's that you don't need to cater to younger audiences to have an award-winning best-seller.

The_Dragon_Born 45 pts

@Gargaglio5tatus I know about Metroid Prime. How long ago was that again? You tell me...Gamecube and DS. Wii got Other M. My comment holds. Wait you're not going to remind me about the Wii ports of Metroid Prime are you? No probably not...

Something that I keep in mind is that the 3DS has sold over ten million systems but the software sales don't justify the 3DS. / Are people waiting for their favorite series. Paper Mario 3DS, Kingdom Hearts, MGS3, Kid Icarus, etc. because that is still a long wait.

wiidsduelpack 7 pts

Nintendo loves to repeat corporate BS. He has said this twice and I still see nothing and the new original game will come out in 2013.

BoabDreeps 12 pts

The creator of Mario, eh? So this is the guy I need to kill...

shinmew 7 pts

Maybe if we are lucky it will be geared to his old fans that grew up over the years and not kids. Somehow, I doubt it though. I use to be such a huge fan of Nintendo... Now I'm just a hardcore gamer that does not discriminate between systems. Although the old school gamer in me wants Nintendo to be successful.

This man is a genious. He is definately one of the most creative game creators of all time. "xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made." -- John Carmack

@nintendo_naut But most gamers views on those games don't agree.

nintendoboy16 126 pts

@SicklySunStorm Don't count on anything Eternal Darkness related after how bad the first game did commercially.

adrdeju 6 pts

Here's comes another master piece. Can't wait.

warhawk-geeby 126 pts

'Oiram' I reckon. It's about the underground water network/sewage system of Japan. In all seriousness though I actually look forward to this announcement a lot. Pikmin was a beautiful creation! :)

SicklySunStorm 34 pts

I'll be very happy to get my hands on Luigi's Mansion 2, so anything more from Mr 'Moto is good with me. Eternal Darkness 3DS anyone? @cbeck002 - I love Zelda and don't agree with that statement.... but it still made me giggle a whole lot. Maybe that particular Zelda game will come with Wii WarioWare 2: Inaccurate Wagglin'?

kriggy 5 pts

A new character licensed by Nintendo would be neat. All nintendo characters are so original. But I think that whatever he is planning to do is going to be great. Maybe I will even consider getting the Wii U for this, because the two latest consoles from Nintendo I own are the very first DS and the N64.

PheneonS 5 pts

Interesting. VERY interesting. Next thing I wonder is if this will be at the very least cameo-ed with the upcoming Super Smash Bros.

Wolflink001 7 pts

I'm sure whatever Miyamoto is working on will be epic nonetheless.

blowtar12345 5 pts

I think they need to come up with a totally new franchise to be honest. Although Mario and eveythin else is good, there's only so much I can play until I same the same content over and over. Also bring Eternal Darkness 2 to the Wii U and my money is yours!!!

Nzilla 19 pts

THE GOD OF VIDEO GAMES HAS SPOKEN! All hail Miyamoto!

WarioBro64 5 pts

@jjmonster2006 I consider it more of a testament to how well Nintendo's established series are performing in the market, and how it's taken this long before the company deemed it necessary for Mr. Miyamoto to add a new franchise to their collection. For the record, I'm a "die-hard" fan, and I haven't felt cheated in the slightest! Haha

cbeck002 23 pts

And by "original game" we of course mean "Legend of Zelda: Wonky Controls 2." I'll believe it when I see it.

jjmonster2006 5 pts

developers work on new titles all the time. the fact that this was announced on gamespot just shows how much Nintendo has fallen. I think they've finally realized that what they've been recycling for the last ten to fifteen years doesn't work in today's world, as even their die hard fans realize they're being cheated out of their gaming worth.

qdowgmama 5 pts

Wow I can't believe all the people saying "Oh i hope it's a sequal/ different version of a mario/ zelda/ pikmin/ Dk game." It's a new IP. He'll make completely new characters and a new world for those character. And it will most likely be a land that will blow your mind with imagination.

Emerald_Warrior 12 pts

Can't wait to see it. Let's just hope it's not something along the lines of Mario is Missing.

pszone 17 pts

or could be something new or would be cool nindendo buy rights Gex series since everyone forgotten lol

pszone 17 pts

So i guess it will be Pikmin since they did say bringing back series long ago.Do another Pikmin since donky kong didnt work out last time in the uk

DWraySweZ 10 pts

So He came up Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, will this be his fifth original IP... he had a big hand in creating Icarus and Star Fox but his own creations are the first four mentioned but he has influenced hundreds of games

selbie 11 pts

Im fearful it will be something like Wii Music was for the Wiimote >___> i just hope Nintendo tries to introduce some new mascots aside from the beaten-to-death Mario & zelda staples.

iortegon 5 pts

lol someone put "did he make zelda too?" of coarse he did hes f***in miyamoto!

randomrings 6 pts

very cool. Do i smell that they will release this before the new super smash bros and whatever the new main character is will be a new playable character (or something likened to this scenario)?

WafflePrime 41 pts

Sweet I've been waiting to hear this.

Gargaglio5tatus 5 pts

@The_Dragon_Born The Metroid games are honestly the darkest, most mature games I have ever played in my life (Except Other M, which was just a really cool action game). The franchise is masterful, and on the same level as Mario and Zelda, but I can see it's still pretty overlooked, seeing as you forgot about it when typing your comment.

servb0ts 55 pts

Can't wait tosee him create another Great Classic.

ForsakenWicked 9 pts

Now this is quite interesting. I'll be following up on this new project as I'm curious to see how Miyamoto fares in creating a new IP.

I don't know. What's on a name?I ask.People tend to rely to much in a single person when there's a lot to pick up today. There's a lot of very good games and not from today but since some years ago and better that I used to play earlier years. I've noticed a lot of very entertaining games lately.Furthermore now people have discovered when Nintendo was abscent from the main picture not like 8,or 16 bits, years.I don't own a wii,ds and so on.I think people shouldn't rely all that much in a single person, group or company but Miyamoto can't still try but for me isn't all that important for today standards. That is my 2 cents.
