Introduction

Introduction to the Robotic Creatures

Have you ever dreamed about building and programming your very own robotic creature? Maybe you want a creature that spins around when it bumps into something, or maybe you want one that beeps when you clap your hands. If this interests you, then you are in exactly the right place. So let’s get started building our robots!

In this course, you will:

  • learn what a robot is
  • build a robotic base with two motors and two wheels
  • enhance the robotic base with lights and sensors
  • use the GoGo Board to program several different robotic behaviors
  • consider a number of decoration ideas
  • learn about other robotic creatures

This course assumes that you have had experience with the GoGo Board and writing programs with the GoGo Monitor software. If you are not already familiar with the GoGo Board and how to program it, or if you feel you need a review, read through the GoGo Board Basics course.

What do we mean by robot?

There are many definitions for robot on the Internet and in print reference sources. Most of these refer to a mechanism with some kind of electronic intelligence that can be programmed to carry out certain actions. Robotics is the technology associated with robots.

In this course, we will focus on creating a robot creature. We will start with a simple robotic base that can be programmed to move in several different ways. Then we will add accessories, such as sensors, to enhance the behavior of our creature. We will also explore ways to decorate our creature so that it looks like something special.
