I have some pretty vivid memories of spending entire days playing Sonic Adventure 2 on both the Dreamcast and GameCube. I can clearly remember rollin' around at the speed of sound. I had places to go. I followed my rainbow.

That was, however, back in 2001. Certain aspects of this high-definition re-release simply aren't as enticing as they were over a decade ago. The controls and camera are borderline offensive at times, but at least the Chao Garden is still as amazing as ever!

Sonic Adventure 2 has two stories: "Hero" and "Dark." Each consists of three mission types: Sonic and Shadow run through some speedy 3D platforming, Tails and "Eggman" use their robots to go around shooting things, and Knuckles and Rogue need to find three pieces of whatever happened to scatter throughout the level.

This game comes from an era in which 3D videogame cameras weren't quite understood. Hell, they are still messed up quite frequently today. It is possible to rotate the camera horizontally most of the time, but you cannot ever move the camera up and down. Many times you'll want to see what you're jumping down onto, but it is impossible and will result in you making a leap of faith, sometimes to your doom. Other times, the camera will get stuck on walls or flip out and obfuscate your character.

The boss fights are also a mixed bag. Some fights can take a whopping thirty seconds, but when the boss's weak point isn't clear, it can take upwards of five minutes as you try the limited options each character has. None of the encounters are particularly interesting, either -- each one usually consists of repeating a single tactic for up to five iterations. They're monotonous and just downright boring most of the time, making those longer fights feel like a trudge.

The Story Mode almost feels like work to get through, but after completing it, Sonic Adventure 2 opens up. Every level has four alternate objectives to accomplish which are mildly entertaining and provide the opportunity to take a new approach. For example, one objective tasks you with finding a hidden Chao in each level, forcing you to explore the nooks and crannies within each. There's little incentive to complete them, except to get more Emblems. Emblems are rewarded for completing a level and are only used for getting unique Chao eggs from the Chao Black Market.

There are also kart racing and boss rush modes, neither of which are really worth the time. The kart racing is as barebones as possible. There are three difficulties of simple races -- no power-ups or special moves at all, which makes for an incredibly boring game mode. Boss rush might have been entertaining if the boss fights weren't already uninteresting, especially considering both the Hero and Dark sides have similar, if not identical, boss fights.

Perhaps the best news of all is that there's finally a reason to go back and revisit the Chao Garden. With every new Sonic release, there will be someone out there clamoring for a new version of Sonic Adventure 2's Chao Garden. It's understandable, since its inclusion is what turns this from a weak 3D platformer into one of the greatest pet simulators of all time.

For the uninitiated, the Chao Garden is a lot like the Tamagochis of yore. Each Chao is a blank slate, ready to take on any characteristic and statistic given to it. Small animals and "Chao Drives" are found throughout the levels by destroying enemies, and when given to Chao, their stats begin to grow. If a Chao is given a couple of gorillas, for example, that Chao will then take on a unibrow and purple gorilla appendages, along with a Power stat increase. Chao Drives will increase stats but not change the physical appearance at all, in case you like the way your Chao already looks.

Eventually, they will evolve depending on what kind of animals they were raised with. There are even unique Chao evolutions, like one that resembles Sonic or the main character from NiGHTS. Additionally, there's a Kindergarten, races, karate fights, and a black market to offer plenty of chances to spend more time in the Chao Garden. It's a perfect side distraction from the traditional levels, and being forced to play through the levels isn't as bad when you take your time looking for animals to enhance your Chao.

The new HD graphics are not perfect, but they're suitable. The character models don't look too bad, but some of the environments and textures just look weird in their "upgraded" form. While it is at least presented in widescreen, it's still noticeable that this is a decade-old game. The CG cutscenes are unchanged and display in a 4:3 ratio with side bars. What's odd is that some of the in-game cutscenes are also in 4:3. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why some are widescreen and some are not. Sonic Adventure 2 doesn't have the type of style that a game like Jet Set Radio has, so it isn't as timeless and easy to look at, even with updated visuals.

Then there's the soundtrack. Oh man, this soundtrack is something else, and even earned the honor of being the first game soundtrack I ever purchased (I’m proud to say). Long gone are the bleeps and bloops that Sonic ran to on the Genesis. In their stead are guitar riffs, the Knuckles rap songs, and whatever it is you call this.

The soundtrack falls into the category of "so bad it's AMAZING" and has certainly garnered a specific reputation as such. There is a weird sound issue that causes the music to be much louder than the voice work during cutscenes, but this is a blessing in disguise considering the quality of the voice acting.

The best news? You can listen to the soundtrack whenever you want inside the game!

Sonic Adventure 2 is a strange package. Many people will have already decided whether or not they want to relive their nostalgia in HD, despite the wonky controls, awful camera, and uninteresting boss fights. That being said, exploring the levels for either the alternate objectives or Chao animals can be entertaining, and the Chao Garden is as good as ever. The platforming hasn't aged well, but this is probably the last chance you'll get to revisit the wonderfully time-consuming Chao Garden.

Although time hasn't been kind, you know what they say: live and learn.

Chao Garden
I don't understand. I'm pretty sure that if I'm rolling around at the speed of sound, then it's a 10, right?

I mean follow me, set me free, and together we will escape from the... Scores lower than 10. Right? RIIIIIIIGGGGHHHT!??!?!?
I will be purchasing this regardless of age; I don't mind reliving and re-learning the tricks of the trade with SA2, despite not being as great as it once was.
I'll stick with my GameCube version.
Im pumped for some Chao garden. I must amass an army for science.
Is the local multiplayer still intact for this? My friends and I had a blast with that.
I think you might be being a bit generous with this, this was a game that even at its time kind of sucked. I remember being pretty bummed out by it after playing it 10 years ago.
I'm sorry you had to play through those Tails/Eggman levels. Those things were awful as I remember.
The gamecube version is superior in my opinion. I would love it if Sega made a game all about Choas!! Like an rpg kind of game.

That song was the main reason I loved the final story boss so much.

I'd have to ask a few things.

1) Are the Big the Cat Cameos from the DC version in there?

2) Does this have the same problem the Gamecube version had with audio from cutscenes being kinda out of sync, interupting other sounds occasionally?

And, 3) WHERE BE STEAM VERSION
Sonic/Shadow levels were awesome and pure fun

Eggman levels as a shooter is really damn fun too but Tails levels were fucking shit

Knuckles/Rouge levels are boring but harmless and my god, the hours I spentt raising my chao back then. I'll get this game one day, that was a great review.
I reeeally like this game, one of the first games I picked up for my Gamecube...I can´t remember how often I replayed Cit Escape for these glowing, stat rising orbs/sticks for my Chaos... and how happy I was after I had my first hero/flying Chao...ahhh fun times.

Hey Sega, what about a Wii U version with 3DS connectivity for Chao raising on the go ?

Eh, never liked Sonic Adventure 2 that much.
I actually liked this game more than the first one. The Sonic/Shadow levels are genuinely fun even to this day, the Eggman/Tails levels are fun (in a blowing crap up kind of way) but get boring after awhile, and the Knuckles/Rouge levels are some of my worst gaming memories. However, I do agree that the music is easily the best part of this game, and one of the few reasons I would even consider getting this.

Also, I think I'm the only person on the planet who absolutely hated the Chao Garden. Because I'm a horrible human being.
I wish this had online multiplayer. The multiplayer is still fun and funny to me. Like yelling at your Chao to beat your friends chao at racing. It's like being a mommy
I always liked the first game better, personally. But I'll be damned if SA2's Chao Garden doesn't make it automatically worth it.

The soundtrack is the best part of this game, the sonic stages are kinda fun, and the garden is cool. other than that, like ALL 3D sonic games, this game is lame.
Why play this when you can play the infinitely better Sonic Generations?

@Fugly Duckling - Thanks, those levels are really bad. I actually originally had an entire paragraph dedicated to how bad they are, but removed it to go over other things more.

@Ktroys - 1) YES! Big the Cat cameos are in. I think I managed to look about 80% of the time just from memory.

2) Some of the voice samples do overlap in certain cutscenes, but that kind of falls in line with the rest of the cutscene quality. They're kind of a mess.

I'd be more inclined to pick this up if it weren't for the Emblem collecting. As much as I enjoyed the Chao Garden, it took me 180+ hours (just checked my old GameCube stats) to attain a 100% completion rating. No, thanks. Not again.

Unless I can overcome my OCD-ness, I'm going to have to pass on this one (still have fun playing Sonic's levels, though).
I think at least some of the tracks were actually genuinely good, not just so bad it's good. I think the main theme is pretty damn awesome. There's no denying it's all got an extremely thick coating of cheese though, and I'm okay with that.

I also think that there were some good boss fights in there, especially the later ones. I have great memories of fighting the Prototype boss as Shadow and the final boss of the game overall. Both the Adventure games have pretty awesome end bosses. I have good memories of those.

Other criticisms make perfect sense to me though. Occasionally I go back to the game and it really hasn't aged well. I still love it though. But I won't be buying this. I have it on GC and paying again for a game that just doesn't stand up nowadays for what is essentially a slightly higher resolution texture pack and widescreen that randomly switches to 4:3 every so often.

Similarly to that widescreen issue, I got the DMC HD Collection in the post today, and I'm finding the same thing. It's weird, there also doesn't seem to be any distinction between when it is and isn't used. I guess that's just one of the things you get playing a game that was never supposed to be played on machines a decade in the future.
Sonic Adventure 2 is, in my opinion, the best Sonic game we've ever gotten. I even paid for the official soundtrack. I just wish SEGA would stop with this whole pay-extra-for-the-added-content bullshit.

I was actually incredibly underwhelmed with Sonic Generations. I finished the game in like an hour and a half, and the Super Sonic fight at the end was the worst of any I've ever done.

I played this on my Dreamcast recently while I was house sitting for someone. It's bad. I really liked it when I first played through it years ago. But, wow, it did not age well for me at all.
Loved this game, please bring it to Steam!
Played this recently on the dreamcast. Then I took it out never to play it again. Go demand Maken X HD if you want a game that actually stands the test of time.
Doesn't matter, still my most favorite Sonic game and all time classic.
6.5 is way too generous. This game has always been horrendous. The only borderline fun stages are Sonic and Shadow's, and they're only 20% of the game. The rest is painfully boring, slow, tedious treasure hunting and clunky mech stages.
@pedrovay: I won't disagree about the length, but that isn't really what interests me. The levels were a blast and the game saw a return of a feature that I've been wanting for sooooooo long: the ability to play ALL of the levels as Super Sonic!
Man, farming for chao garden. I guess I liked it the first time, but I don't know how anyone can do that more than once. Especially when I learned that there was a breeding mechanic turning the chao into pokemon and IVs.

Compared to what exactly? I guess I'm one of the few who enjoyed the running and shooting stages while tolerating the treasure hunting ones. Still loads better than the shit we saw Sega releasing after this gem.
It's not that time hasn't been kind to the game. This game was never good! I've always hated it, though I like it more than Adventure 1.
They need to hurry up and put Nights HD on Steam. Also some Panzer Dragoon HD while their at it.
Yes the soundtrack was really good... but to be honest, the soundtracks from Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles were superior. They had brilliant compositions. Had to say it because referring the soundtracks of those games as "bleeps and bloops" is wrong.
Hmm, might pick this one up down the line, both SA1 and 2 were great.

I shuddered when I was reminded of the Knuckles/Rouge levels....those levels pushed me to the edge of sanity.
My girlfriend used to get mad at me for abusing the Chao.... making up for it later was always fun. Can't say I remember much about the game other than that.
Ive always hated this game, since I pkayed it on Gamecube back in the day. Played like absolute ass. And that music.....kill me with a screwdriver....
