    What’s Up?

    Restoring profile images announcement
GameSpot was doing a little bit of moving around over the past few weeks, and with any major move, things can sometimes get shuffled, broken and possibly lost. We’re sure that many of you have noticed some oddities happening with various user uploaded images for banners, signatures, and event profile pictures. Many have already been returned to profiles and rest assured the rest should be restored eventually. We appreciate your patience during this time and if there are any additional complications there will be a technical announcement made in this forum here.

    Return of GameSpot calendar?
A bit of a rumor around the office is the return of the GameSpot calendar. For those of you who don’t remember or have simply forgotten, the calendar was a nifty module located smack dab on the front page of GameSpot that would share the dates and times of various live streams and events! We were all sad to see it go and many of us are excited about the whisperings of its return. Be sure to stay tuned to the Community News for more updates.

Mod of the month and ranger of the month
We have amazing volunteers that are constantly putting forth great efforts on the site, this month we’re going to shine a spotlight on our Moderator of the Month as well as our Ranger of the Month, AdobeArtist and michaelP4!

This weeks chalk talk assignment: Achievement Unlocked

In game Achievements, something that simultaneously holds a great amount of pride and bile in the gaming community. Some games hold true to insuring that an achievement earned is one that took effort to do, while other games give you achievements for simply pressing play. Are they a complete waste of time? Do gamers really care about the number of achievements unlocked? Or do they help to establish a sense of value to the time you've put into a game, and possibly add depth to your gaming experience? Special Thanks to GameSpotter Jbul for helping to inspire this weeks Chalk Talk topic! Mark your blog as editorial and to sound off in the roll call thread here with your awesome Chalk Talk entry Roll-Call.

    Gaming Bulletin

Time for the weekly social gaming bulletin, lets hit the ground running and take a quick look at this "Rode Dog" app created by an 11 year old girl named Victoria Walker. Victoria collaborated with designer David Grau to create an app to help prevent texting while driving as a part of the "It Can Wait" campaign. Victoria not only created something to help people, but she is also now about $20,000 richer for it thanks to the promotion created by AT&T. Next up GDC Online is right around the corner and for those who are interested in game development and are in the Austin area you should check it out! What? Don’t have any tickets handy? Well you can enter here for a chance to get a pass to GDC Online in Austin Texas. Finally for you Minecraft fans, they have recently added not one, not two, but 33 new biomes to explore in the popular pixel playground. For more information on what these biomes offer to enhance your gaming experience check this link here.

    Geeky Gimmies

A little quiet this week, but we still managed to find a few frilly fancy finds for those gamer girls. First off we stumbled on this amazing complete outfit for Princess of Zelda which is nothing short of stunning. Granted the 1,500 price tag is a little on the steep side for some, but if you're a die hard Zelda fan and have been meaning to get the perfect cosplay! Next up we have a few more girly accessories, these silver Cactaur earrings are a great addition to any jewelry box. But if all these things aren't your cup of tea we also found this deal on Amazon for the 10th Anniversary edition of Firefly. This 544 page full color volume is amazing and honestly a must have for any die hard Brown Coat.

We picked this user for his interesting points on Desmonds story line (or lack there of). "Yeah. Seems strange. We know virtually nothing about Desmond in ACIII. And this is supposed to be the conclusion of his story? They're either playing the cards very close to the chest or they're not telling us something."

    Gaming Bulletin

This weeks Gaming Bulletin seems to be filled with a fair amount of depressing news pieces.
Starting with the unfortunate news about the Bohemia Interactive developers who are currently jailed in Greece. Next there's the concerning arguments from the economic contribution study for Scotland's creative industries, claiming that the games industry adds no value. This is a concerning news is particularly alarming due to the fact that many policy decisions, and funding allocations are made based on this type of data. And finally, the news of NC Softs closure of City of Heros was also announced earlier this week. Though it would appear that the CoH community has banded together and started a petition in hopes of keeping the game alive. If you care about City of Heroes you should take a moment to go and make your voice heard. But amidst all this sadness there are still a few things to look forward to. For example Humble Indie Bundle 6 has been announced and will include Rochard, Shatter, S.P.A.Z., Torchlight, and Vessel.

  • Technical Issues & Fixes

    • Posted Aug 22, 2012 12:36 am GMT
    • By

We have been doing even further maintenance and issue investigations lately.

    Resolved Technical Issues

To get you up to speed, the following issues are now resolved.

    - Forum or union flooding errors
    - User review not displaying immediately
    - User images no longer displaying
    - Harsh points loss when encountering a suspension.

    Targeted Technical Issues

The following bugs may be resolved soon, but some need a little more testing.

    - Fuse taking a while to load. We're moving Fuse to another server. With the amount of data that needs to be moved over, we hope to see GameSpot Fuse back online Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT at the latest.

    - Cannot change Password. While this issue is being worked on, check out gmax's automated solution in this topic.

    - RSS Feed Repeating. We think we figured out the problem for this issue related to international feeds, but we will need a little more testing to make sure things are displaying as intended.

    - Settings Issues. For the time being, please use your Fuse settings until we can resolve the old settings issue.

    Further Investigation Required

    - Server error messages. We have multiple technical staff members working on a solution to the server errors, but it's taking a little more time than we thought. If you encounter these problems, please refresh the page. If the problem persists, let us know in the technical support forum.

    - PC game download data missing. Please report any files you notice missing on the site in this topic.

    - Misleading Search Results. We're looking into a variety of search issues you've all reported, including a way to search blogs. More information to follow at a later time.

If you have a technical issue on the site, please post it in the technical support forum. Include as much information as you can, such as the error message, your browser information, the webpage where you found the content, and a screenshot if possible.

The GameSpot staff would like to thank everyone for their messages in a recent discussion involving our plans to rebuild the site. We're working to make the new GameSpot, and we cannot wait to share more news about the changes later this year.

  • GameSpot Fuse Update & Activity

    • Posted Aug 20, 2012 9:18 pm GMT
    • By

We're doing some more GameSpot Fuse maintenance to ensure that this social machine stabilizes. We expect Fuse to be down for 48 hours or less.

If you'd like to take part in something to pass the time, share an acronym of what Fuse could stand for.

    Simple Example:
    Funky
    Unified
    Seeking
    Everyone

Try not to offend your fellow Fuse fans in the process! You all have until Wednesday at 1pm PT to finish this activity and if you have a blog (old or new), you'll be eligible to be considered as the member spotlight on the forums page!

As for the rest of you, please chant "I think you can!" if you want Fuse to return. Just like the little train that could, maybe some encouragement will return Fuse better than ever!

Ever play a game where you couldn't help but feel that you were expected or even at times required to work incredibly hard to simply play the game in the first place?

Several games come to mind, sometimes it can be simple games like Pokemon, or more challenging titles like Skyrim, and of course there are the ever popular games like World of Warcraft or League of Legends have all had moments where (lets face it) we feel like it can be more work than play.

GameSpot Community Manager Synthia Weires thought that she would take a moment in honor of "Work like a dog day" to ask the editors of GameSpot what games they felt made them work like a dog, what was the task, and ultimately was it worth it?

Here's what they had to say!

How about you GameSpotters? Did you ever play a game that made you feel like you worked like a dog? Put your game, and task in the comments below for bonus points to your user profile!

We've in the middle of a transition with the server changes, so we apologize for the time-out errors and other related issues you may have been experiencing.

Due to the number of total users using the image upload tool we cannot warrant us spending resources on supporting it anymore We're determining a way to provide a better image upload system later this year, but starting tomorrow image uploads will be disabled. You can still view all of your image uploads of the years. Please use a 3rd party image upload service like imageshack or photobucke in the meantime.

As we continue to troubleshoot bugs, we appreciate your continued patience, and notifications about issues you've encountered. To keep everyone on the same page, here's the current known bugs we've been troubleshooting in the past week.

    - Server error message - 504 Gateway Time-out. Technical staff have been working around the clock to resolve many of the server errors we've having on the site.

    - Post flooding error preventing you to post in forums or unions.. Planned fix, we're in the process to exceed the amount of posts you can have per minute.

    - User review not displaying immediately If you reviewed a game, please note that some users can see the link on their contributions page, but the review isn't accessible.

    - Why won't my settings save? For the time being, please use your Fuse settings until we can resolve the old settings issue.

    - PC game download data missing. Please report any files you notice missing on the site in this topic..

    - Search problems. We're looking into issues involving forums and blog searches, but there's also reports about short game names not pulling up accurate results. This may require much more investigation across multiple bugs.

    - UK users experiencing IE9 browser issues.GameSpot UK is checking into this technical issue.

    - Harsh points loss when encountering a suspension. If you're a higher level account, you'll notice that when you get suspended, you will lose majority of your level.

We hope to have majority of these problems resolved this week. As always, we appreciate your continued patience and support. If you have a technical issue on the site, please post it in the technical support forum as soon as possible! Be sure to include as much information as you can, such as your browser information, webpage urls where you found the content, and screenshots if possible.

  • GameSpot Server Maintenance

The tech elves will perform some necessary maintenance tomorrow morning from 8am until 10am. While you should be able to browse the website normally, you won't be able to post community content (forums, blogs, Fuse, reviews and so on). Fuse will require even further maintenance up to 24 hours. If you find yourself with excess energy over the downtime, you might want to consider finishing the games you've been meaning to complete. You can also keep in touch with the latest on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+.
