Nokia Maps 2.9 for Windows Phone 8

We have heard much about Windows Phone 8 and the coming apps but there is a set of apps which we have only had glimpses of. Today I was able to get a good hands on with Nokia Maps 2.9 running on the Lumia 920.

Some interesting functionality is visible, notably and options to download maps and even update those maps within the app itself. I was very keen to see how things were progressing with maps read on to hear what I found out..

While the big news today was definitely the official launch of Windows Phone 8, Nokia was able to slide in an update to their ESPN app over the weekend.  The update mainly deals with increasing how you can be notified on scoring and news updates through the Live tile and toast notifications.

The update adds the ability to save and pin your favorite teams and sports to your Windows Phone Start Screen, customize the Live Tile score updates and you can now receive toast notifications for news and score updates.

If you are a Skype user, you'll like some of the new features Windows Phone 8 brings to the table.

First, and maybe the most important improvement, is that Skype can keep you signed-in and reachable even when you've closed out the Skype app. Skype stays asleep in the background until an incoming call or message is received. Not only can you receive calls just like you would through your wireless carrier but staying dormant, you save battery life.

Microsoft recently updated Xbox Extras but unfortunately it created a severe issue where the user was unable to log into Xbox live.

Good news is here for those that like to play with their mini-me while on the move, the app has now been bumped to version 1.5 and we’re back on track.

You can count on Nokia to keep on fine tuning their own apps, each version brings us a step closer to perfection. Today an update is heading out for Nokia Music, their free to listen music service.

The release notes for version 3.5 are scant but we suspect this is version isn’t serving up any new features as the release app notes still show the same features as in version 3.0 which we reported on back in July.

Lost in the fuss over the launch of Windows 8 news we overlooked this the other day. Angry Birds in space is now available in the Microsoft Store.

Can you be an “app store” without at least on version of Angry Birds being present? If that’s the yard stick then many will breathe a sigh of relief to see the game pop into the store right from launch day!

Windows Phone App Review: Photo Shader

Photo Shader is a decent little photo editor for your Windows Phone. The app has a healthy amount of filters and effect to apply to existing photos in your Pictures Hub or new images captured with your Windows Phone camera.

Layout is simple and clean with most filters/effects having setting to fine tune the application. When you first select a photo to edit, cropping tools will appear to let you crop and/or rotate the image. From there, all you need to do is apply your effects and save when done.

Just like our London busses, you wait around for ages and then they all come at once. It seems that someone has flicked a switch somewhere and released a few updates today for Windows Phone.

Of particular note, Amazon Mobile on its way up to version 1.9.1 and picks up support for the oh-so close Windows Phone 8. It’s good to see some developers with early access readying their apps for the shiny new operating system which is only days away.

MetroTalk for Windows Phone v2.5

If you use Google Voice because like us, you have multiple phone numbers or you just like the free data-driven SMS feature, then you should check out MetroTalk for Windows Phone.

The app started off decent enough when it was first launched months ago but it has quickly ramped up to be one of the best, most fully featured Google Talk clients for Windows Phone—that’s specially good since Google doesn’t seem interested in supporting their own services.

"Outsider! Outsider! We have your apps! "

Here at Windows Phone Central, you most likely know the developers at Liquid Daffodil—they make Outsider, glƏƏk!, Cowlick, CumulotweetusCalendar Search and more (9 apps in all).

In fact, Liquid Daffodil just launched two new apps recently called Nate & Frenchy’s Random Axe and Nate & Frenchy’s Life Coach. Both apps are entertainment apps where you place your thumbs on the screen to either randomly generate trivia, numbers, tweets or get some life advice. With bold graphics and a bit of chuckle, Nate & Frenchy will surely keep you amused.

RIP Parcel Tracker: 2010-2012

We have to paint yet another bleak picture for one of our favorite apps on Windows Phone: Parcel Tracker. The package tracker app was featured numerous times on this site and we always gave it a thumbs up, but evidently that wasn’t enough as the app has been removed from the Store.

The developers have evidently sent a news-update thru the app to current customers letting them know that development has stopped and the app has been withdrawn. While current users can still use the app when it comes to Windows Phone 8, you’ll be out of luck.

The developers cite that most users never bought the app and therefore it wasn’t financially lucrative enough to support it anymore. As we’ve heard from some devs before you have to be in Windows Phone dev as a hobby right now.

Once again Nokia is going after a certain demographic with their latest exclusive app: L'Wren Scott (www.wrenscott.com).

The app is quite unique in that it allows you to check out photos and videos from L’Wren’s fashion shows, behind the scenes info and where you can purchase her pricey creations.

The Windows Phone app NCIS Pocket Guide is a quick reference guide for the NCIS television series. The Pocket Guide covers character and episode details for both NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles.

The NCIS Pocket Guide has character bios, episode guides, a listing of Gibb's Rules (way of life rules created by the main character) and a listing of any re-occurring characters that appear on the series. Simply laid out, NCIS Pocket Guide is a decent app for your Windows Phone with a bit of room for improvement. It's not going to appeal to everyone but if you're a fan of the NCIS television shows, it's worth checking out.
