Review: Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational photo

Clap Hanz' Hot Shots Golf series and Sony game system launches go hand in hand, and for most gamers they serve as a nice launch title, holding them over until something bigger and better comes along. But, if you're a fellow golf game freak, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational is your 'bigger and better' game. In fact, as far as golf games go, this one is probably the best.

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational might come on a tiny little cartridge, but it's a huge game. There's a large singe-player portion with challenge and stroke modes, Ad Hoc play for up to eight players, Infrastructure play for 30 people, and a really great Internet mode that puts you up against everyone else in the world on the same course. With tons of courses, characters, items, and play style options, this launch game is likely to stay in your Vita for a very long time. If you're anything like me, I'd recommend getting the digital version to always have it at the ready.

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational (PlayStation Vita)
Developer: Clap Hanz Limited
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Released: February 15, 2012
MSRP: $29.99

The game's main single-player mode takes you through the ranks from rookie to pro, putting you through various 9- and 18-hole course challenges to earn stars, which are then used to unlock head-to-head duels in a sort of boss battle. Beating these silly golfers will let players graduate to the next player level, opening up more difficult courses and opponents. The game starts you off easy, but quickly piles on the difficulty, working you up to courses where putting the ball in the hole is so difficult that it will have you stress-testing the integrity of your Vita's build. Some of the course designs are just cruel. Succeeding in the later levels (and in online matches) requires patience. Fortunately, HSG:WI gives you all the tools you'll need to make a proper shot -- you'll just need to be sure to use them properly.

I'm addicted to the daily tournaments, which have you going up against everyone else online to try to top the leaderboards. Given that the gameplay is asynchronous, the Vita's 3G connection can be used for this mode. Each day the game's servers generate three course challenges, and you'll only get a single chance at each to earn your best score. Completing one of these 9- or 18-hole challenges will give you your round score, and then rank you out of everyone that has played that same course on that day. Beyond this, your overall performance on these daily tournaments is tracked in a bar graph, and you're also given an overall world rank. It's fun to see where you stand compared to everyone else, and even more fun to try topping a daily board.

On the surface, not much has changed in the gameplay department. The swing mechanic is still based around the three-point method the series has been using for years where the first button press starts the swing, the next sets the power of your swing, and the last determines the accuracy. World Invitational lets you pick which swing meter you'd like to use from five available choices, ranging from the classic horizontal bar to the new bar-less one from PS3 game Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. It's nice to have choices, but you'll have to play the game for a bit to unlock all of them.

The change here is that the Vita's front and back touch panels and gyro sensors supplement the standard button control with options to do things like position your character or the camera. One of the best features lets you drag your finger along the back touch panel from the player to the hole to see real-time measurements for distance and incline. Other features are more gimmicky; tilting the system around to pan the camera and view surroundings is neat once or twice, but isn't really useful for gameplay purposes.

This game is packed with unlockable items, and through play and earned points from victories, you can spend to unlock characters, clubs, and balls to directly impact gameplay. The optional costumes for characters, caddies, and music selections are just as rewarding to spend your hard-earned points on. Clubs and balls can even be leveled up, further increasing their benefits.

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational is a great-looking game, sporting a level of high-resolution polish that you'd expect from a full console title. Its nicely animated characters and highly detailed backdrops puts it on par with its PS3 predecessor as far as looks go. It's too bad that the dull, chime-y music will have you zoned out after only a few holes. The strange quotes and noises from the golfers and caddies will snap you out if it, though. One of the female characters' aroused moans happen so often that you can't help but giggle.

World Invitational continues that tradition of a really nice blend of arcade-ish accessibility and sim seriousness. If you want to kick back and relax, fine -- but you can also dig in, get deep with strategy and complex swing tricks, and feel rewarded when you master them all. With its massive array of play options, courses, unlockables, and online challenges, not to mention its portability and always-on 3G connectivity, this is easily the biggest and best Hot Shots Golf game yet.

THE VERDICT

9.0 /10
Superb: A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage to what is a supreme title. Check out more reviews or the Destructoid score guide.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

This game looks amazing but I won't buy this game again because I don't like sport games. I'm not saying this game is bad, just sayin'
I have always loved the Hot Shots games, I'm happy to hear its a series still sportin some serious quality.
I do want this but... I can basically get 3 games at launch, obvious one has to be Uncharted but I'm stuck between this, Wipeout and MK.
meh, bring back Pangya games for consoles Ntreev Soft. Super Swing Golf: Season 3 as Wii U launch title or no golfing for me.
sofik88 - I love Pangya too. So much. But this is just as nice. Different on the short game and maybe less of the trick shots, but very nice.
Dayum. Might just check this out.
always been a fan of the hotshots series. i just never feel like i can do any good no matter how hard i try or no matter how i change my tactics.

i crushed most of the first sets of games but still cant beat the last 2 sets on the ps3 version. i cant get under a score of 30 no matter what i do.
DAY.FUCKING.1.

HSG on PSP is easily my most played portable title ever. And I don't even like golf. It's that addictive.
@Dale, would you recommend it to someone who has never played a Hot Shots game?
I don't really like any sports games, but I still have always really liked Hot Shots for some reason, especially on portables. Already got this sitting on my shelf waiting for my Vita.
Wow, awesome. Well when I get a Vita, looks like I'll be picking this up for sure! :D
Sissel-xema- easily. get it.
I want this game and a Vita....some day! Need to save for the wedding and a new home this year, lol.
Ohh baby!! I love Hot Shots so much. My PS3 might start collecting some dust.
I remeber playing this on the original playstation demo disc. Was fun
This might be the first Hot Shots Golf game I play or buy.
I used to love Pangya so this looks like a pretty sweet game to check out. Will definitely be one of the first titles I pick up after I get a VITA (waiting for PERSONAAAAAAA 4/more money)
Amazon sent me this game early last week and has been laughing at my face since I don't get the Vita until next week.
Hey Dale, great review, just added to my launch list for next week.

had an idea, there you list the games specs(Title, Dev, Pub, etc.) would it be hard to add in what the digital download file size will be? especially in cases like this where you recommend getting the digi version to "always have it at hand"?

just an idea, thanks for all the Vita news/reviews, next week is getting here so damn slowly!
Where are you getting your 29.99 price point? Even digitally it is 35...
Amazon has it for $30, but retail seems to be 40 and digital is 35 D:
Fucking hell I'm stoked for this!
I've been playing this since my store received it's Vita a couple of weeks ago. The game is superb and I can't wait to get the console home and start on the daily tournaments!!
Is it true this title has an Online Pass?
damn im guessing the vita will renew my interest in sports games and driving games :)

Wipeout 2048 and this FTW!!!!!

always like the quirky and arcade feel type rather than realistic games to be honest.

it feels like playing a video game to be honest :P
@osifracrat

Yep
@jusonator I think MKs not out till april 2nd
@Dale North,
i tried to love some previous Hot Shots game but none really hit that sweet spot in terms of physics. for me it's either Pangya/Mario Golf if i play on a standard controller/handheld or Tiger Woods, but only with Wii Motion +. everything else simply doesn't feel right.
same goes to other sports games - they have to have the right control scheme, physics and gameplay elements.
Hot Shots golf has been a great series since the original Playstation, I'm not a big fan of golf but this series has always given endless hours of fun and tons of replay value with it's unlockable characters, courses, & clubs etc. I'm glad to see the title still bringing enjoyment to the new handheld.
You know, I came back to this review after actually playing this for a relatively significant amount of time, and I agree with almost all of it.

The graphics, though? I don't want to come across as a graphics whore, but you claim it's on par with the comparative PS3 title and I can't help but disagree. This is, amongst my moderately small collection of 11 games, among the worst-looking games on the Vita. It has blatantly not been optimized for a higher resolution screen, with terrible graphical glitches occurring whenever the camera pans. It doesn't look BAD, but I wouldn't dare show this to a friend with impressive graphics in mind.

That said, I suck :(
it's a huge game. I really love this. health insurance in nc
You make it enjoyable and you still care for to keep it wise. compare term life insurance rate
I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well. In fact your creative writing abilities has inspired me to start my own Blog Arkansas Health Insurance
With tons of courses, characters, items, and play style options, this launch game is likely to stay in your Vita for a very long time. If you're anything like me, I'd recommend getting the digital version to always have it at the ready term papers for sale http://www.term-papers.cc/
