I haven't committed much time to playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game since its first sequel, which would normally make me feel somewhat disqualified to talk about what the blue hedgehog is up to in modern days. But playing Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 at GDC, I didn't feel as if I'd missed much of anything, particularly as our demo had a focus on Sonic's sidekick, Miles "Tails" Prower.

Tails was my favorite part of Sonic 2 (which I wholly admit may affect my judgment here) and I always wished I could have approached stages in that game using only the little freak of nature. But an inability to play him solo and the design which limits the viewable area of the level to what's around Sonic meant I'd never get quite what I wanted, even if I had a second person to hold controller one.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 (Android, iOS, PC, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade)
Developer: Sonic Team

Publisher: SEGA
Release: May 16, 2012

Players still won't have total freedom to explore the game as Tails this time either, but some allowances are being made to make playing with the pair a little easier. The screen will zoom out to some degree when they are apart, then rubber-band the player lagging behind forward to the player in front. As Sega described it to me, levels are being designed which takes this mechanic into account for the purpose of cooperative speed-running, whereby two players can work together to collect all secrets in a level while constantly moving forward to the end of the stage for a fast time.

Tails brings a few new abilities to the game as well. He can pair up with Sonic to perform special moves together. This includes Tails' signature flight ability, which allows him to grab Sonic in mid-air and carry him a short distance in any direction. While on the ground, the pair will roll together to do massive damage, necessary to eliminate some larger enemies.

The physics are also more of a return to form, with Sonic properly maintaining his momentum during jumps and spins, as well as gaining momentum on hills without player interference. As such, I didn't have any problems adjusting to the controls and it feels much more like a proper Sonic game than what I've seen in the last decade.

Sega promises that they have more to reveal, including some new features and abilities, but the game is promising. It's a little hard to imagine Sonic fans still managing get their hopes up about the series by this point -- particularly when every single release just results in a barrage of complaining. Maybe having that enthusiasm up is where they've gone wrong all along. What I played today, I enjoyed but didn't feel like a revelation. It felt like a solid Sonic the Hedgehog game. Things seem to be going along the right track, leaving me cautiously optimistic that this will at least turn out to be a fun title.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Looks like sonic team actually knows what there doing, So gettin this shit
You can be Tails on his own in Sonic 2. Just hit up the options screen.
Can't wait for this.
But anyways, I was cautiously optimistic for S4E1 and was right to be cautious .Then cautiously with Sonic Generations and that ended up fabulous. Everything seems positive for S4E2 though... Still refusing to waive caution after one good move though!
What Hasney says is true; it carries over into Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, too. I played as Tails solo all the time.
Now, look, I don't want to be labelled a horrible optimist but... could it be that Sonic Team has finally got their act together, and the blue hedgehog's former glory is being restored? I think so. ^^
I don't expect to see any kind of revelation from Sonic games anymore. The whole side-scrolling fast action has been done to death in the series and each Sonic game like it is going to be "more of the same". Just like Mario, Pokemon and Kirby, with Sonic games you pretty know what to expect out of it.
Sounds good to me. After having a blast with Colors and Generations, I'm willing to give Sega the benefit of the doubt on Episode2... no matter how shitty Ep1 was.
Hey guys? Sonic 4: Episode 1 and Sonic Generations were good games.

He doesn't need a return to form because he's already there.
@LBDN

Yuppp, best thing is that Tails finally gets a super form in S3&K; too <3
Floaty, awkward physics, pointless speed cap on rolling, terrible level design full of boosters and springs and homing attack chains, no actual improvements over Sonic 3 beyond graphics.

Another bad Sonic game.

Are Sonic and Tails 69ing each other in the header...
@ScrappyDoo

Do you do anything but bitch and complain that a lot of games are terrible.
There are going to be so many jokes about that Sonic/Tails 69 spindash move.
Lol @Fuzunga. They're such best friends. Either way, Episode 2 is looking like what Episode 1 should have been. I can dig it.
Tails is so playable by himself in sonic 2. just have to go into the options
@Hasney
You know what? I am absolutely tired of hearing this crap! First of all, Sonic games never got THAT bad(except Sonic 06). SU and S&tBK; were actually some of the BETTER kid's games of that time. If you think you prefer a Spyro or Crash game to them, you are either exaggerating or just stupid. Second of all, Sonic 4 ep 1 WOULD have been liked if it had been called Sonic Rush 3(and btw, the advance/rush games were ok). Third of all, they've had TWO good moves. Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. If you want me to back up that opinion, I'll have you know Sonic Colors received a 78 on metacritic. That's the same as Kirby's new game, but you don't see anyone complaining about Kirby. Sonic is back. He is not at Mario status yet, but he is at least on par with other platformers like Kirby and LBP. It's time to drop you bias and just start treating Sonic as you would any other series. They are NOT going to mess up again, and you all know I'm right. You're just hating for the sake of hating.
Why are so many people unaware of the ability to change to tails alone in Sonic 2, right under the settings theres, Sonic and Tails, Sonic, and Tails, why so many people are unaware of this blows my mind
The physics are nothing without proper level design that makes actual use of them. It's clear the same design philosophy of Sonic 4 Part 1 dominates that sector. IE: Automation with springs and speedboosters everywhere, enemy chasms, and death pits galore instead of smart level design that makes use of built up momentum and slopes. They can change the physics all they want, but not making use of them defeats the purpose as they go hand in hand with level design.

Also you could play Tails only in Sonic 2. Got to the options screen and select Tails alone. Boom. Another thing that this game won't do either because they didn't map out the acts to be compatible with Tails in the lead. I'm not even sure how exactly Tails would break the game anyway. Right now he's a glorified partner gimmick. It's pathetic.
@Daniel ODonnell

I apologise if my cautious optimism caused you to explode.

Actually, I don't. That was tremendous.
@Daniel - Why would you even compare Sonic to Crash and Spyro? Crash was a straight platfromer with an emphasis on precise jumps and power usage over raw speed, and Spyro wasn't really a platformer at all and was more of an adventure game. The entirety of Sonic 2 can be completed in the time it would take you to 100% a single hard level of the original Spyro. Apples and Oranges mate...

Also, where has all this rage for S4E1 come from? I thought that game was generally liked and successful, I loved it. I'll be getting this day one, especially since it looks like the Mrs can play as Tails!
