John Logan taking on writing duties for Bond 24 and 25 photo

Bet you didn't expect news about a Bond sequel so soon did ya? Hell, Skyfall hasn't even released in the states yet! Of course, that doesn't really mean anything when it comes to the Bond franchise, because it's not like we're not going to get a sequel. There is a precedent being set here, however, because it looks like Bond 24 and 25 are actually going to be written as a pair, with an overall story arc that will span both films. John Logan, who co-wrote and won an Academy Award for Gladiator, apparently pitched his two film Bond story to producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson while Skyfall was in production, and they took right to it. Logan had a hand in the Skyfall script, and this will be the first time since before The World is Not Enough that Neal Purvis and Robert Wade won't be handling writing duties for the world's most suave spy.

If you have any doubt that the world needs any more Bond, you better check out our month full of Bond features, and if you haven't already, you best read Xander's review of Skyfall. Or else.

Losing My Virginity: The Spy Who Loved Me photo

[Losing My Virginity articles are reviews written by someone who still hasn't seen an incredibly popular movie after all these years. LMV reviews are interesting in that they can offer the perspective of a person who's untainted by the cloud of commonness that surrounded a famous film of the past, and also show how well it has stood the test of time.]

I have never seen a James Bond movie before now. Well, completely anyway. I've seen bits and pieces of Dr. No,I know of Goldeneye because of that too-cool-for-school Nintendo 64 game, and I know that James Bond has supervillains because of that one episode of The Simpsons. My point is, I've managed to not see any of the fifty (FIFTY!) years worth of Bond films for some reason or another. This brings us to The Spy Who Loved Me.

Since this was my first foray into the Bondverse, I had no idea where to start. Should I have gone recent and just watch the Craig films, or should I start at the beginning with Connery? Matt suggested I started at TSWLM since Moore's absurdity is a nice way of easing into the Bond behemoth. And he was absolutely right.

The Spy Who Loved Me is a delicious burrito. Its meaty insides have a compelling Bond and dangerously cheesy lines and sequences, all while wrapped in a tortilla of pure wacky fun.

Daniel Craig to be in at least two more Bond films photo

I'm not sure this will surprise anyone, but Daniel Craig's contract obligates him to at least five films for the Bond franchise. If my calculations are correct, that would leave two more after next month's Skyfall. How is this news? Well, think of it more as a comforting reminder that Craig's angry mug will be sitting on top of those tuxedo-ed shoulders for a few more years yet. Of course, actors have left the role before their contracts had been fulfilled, including Sean Connery himself, so it's not impossible to think that Craig may walk away before he completes his obligation... but that would seriously suck.

I know everyone has heard it before, but I think Craig is if not the best Bond, then at least the most awesome Bond. He's suave, but ruthless, and that's an edge I think the character benefits from. Let's hope Skyfall can correct some of the missteps taken by Quantum of Solace and bring back the Bond I fell in love with from Casino Royale.

Kenneth Branagh in talks to direct, star in Jack Ryan photo

I'm excited to report that the Christ Pine-starring Jack Ryan reboot from Paramount may finally be back on track. Having recently lost director Jack Bender, the studio has tapped Thor director and Dutch angle-enthusiast Kenneth Branagh to direct the film. Additionally, Branagh is in talks to play Viktor Stazov, the film's central villain with a plot to destroy the US economy. The film has spent some time languishing in development hell due to conflicting desires for the tone of the film between Chris Pine, the producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Paramount itself, though perhaps Branagh's presence will help to unify those.

I'm torn on this. I really love all the Jack Ryan movies, even The Sum of All Fears which had the handicap of releasing when it was cool to hate Ben Affleck, and I really like Chris Pine as a new Jack Ryan. That said, I've never really liked Branagh as a director. As an actor, he's good when someone bothers to reel him in, but I think he directs everything like theater, very over the top and playing to the rafters. Here's hoping that works better for Jack Ryan than it did for Thor.

I love how Ben Affleck's evolved as an entertainer. We all cackled and laughed at him back in the day, largely from the whole Jennifer Lopez crap, and a lot of us had written him off. Then with the two-shot of Gone Baby Gone and The Town, he very quickly reinvented himself as a director worth our time. Argo tells the story of a CIA operative (Affleck) that saves six escapees from the US Embassy as the infamous Iranian hostage crisis of 1979-1981 played out. I love the cloak and dagger stuff going on here, with Affleck's character posing as a filmmaker trying to make a movie in Iran to cover his secret mission.

Argo releases October 12th, and if Gone Baby Gone and The Town are any indicators, it's likely going to be an awards season picture, if only for the performances.

Usually, I'm not really one for big-budget action movies. This however, looks pretty awesome. Safe House stars Denzel Washington as an infamous CIA agent who goes rouge and Ryan Reynolds as an inexperienced, mid-level agency drone who gets roped into some cataclysmic plot that is way, way bigger than him.

This trailer has me really excited for Safe House. I only wish that maybe it didn't give so much away... Safe House comes out February 10th, 2012.
