DOOM 3: BFG is finally out today, have a launch trailer

Brett Zeidler, Contributor
4:30 PM on 10.16.2012

Can you believe DOOM 3 came out eight years ago? To be honest, I feel like it didn't even really need an HD release. To me it still looks fantastic. Oh well, I guess it looks even better now, so that's cool. Also, it's in 3D and includes DOOM 1 and DOOM 2. Because why not?

I remember this game used to scare the absolute sh*t out of me back in the day, I can't even imagine how I'd handle this game using the Oculus Rift in 3D and in HD. It'd be cool as hell though, wouldn't it? Oh, and id Software is only asking $39.99 ($29.99 for PC) for it. Have I done a good job of convincing you that DOOM 3: BFG Edition is a really good deal yet?

LittleBigPlanet Vita breaks street date

LittleBigPlanet Vita breaks street date photo

LittleBigPlanet Vita was all set for a September 25th release date, but guess what? That crummy old street date has been broken, which means the release date is "whenever the hell you feel like buying it."

But hold on people, as not everything is broken! Don't expect Sony to break the online "street date" just yet, as online functionality won't be available until tomorrow.

It looks like you'll have to play with yourself in the meantime. Given how great this game is however, that shouldn't be too hard.

[Thanks, Phil!]

Nintendo.com lists 20+ titles dated for Wii U launch day

Nintendo.com lists 20+ titles dated for Wii U launch day photo

Yesterday, we found out about the fifty titles Nintendo expects to be released in North America during the Wii U's "launch window," but the details on which of those fifty would be on store shelves the same day as the console had yet to be revealed. We may have a better idea of that now, following a whole bunch of game pages on Nintendo.com (spotted by Game Usagi) having their release dates updated to the magical November 18 console launch day.

A number of bigger games are listed (including ZombiU and Rayman Legends) and a lot of the higher-profile ports appear as well. Mass Effect 3, Batman Arkham City, and Epic Mickey 2 are all there. And, just under three weeks after arriving on the competition, Assassin's Creed III dropping on launch would be a welcome treat.

There's a small caveat that I would apply to this impressive list. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is also listed as being available on November 18th, but we've heard from Activision already that it should be on sale earlier than that, arriving on the 13th instead. So, someone, somewhere, is wrong and if Nintendo is wrong about the one, I have to question the rest until they confirm otherwise (we've asked).

In the best case scenario, Nintendo doesn't give a salty toss about when Activision puts their game on sale, went ahead and listed the launch date of the console and decided to have the most amazing launch day lineup in their history. I know that's what I'm hoping for.

Tony Hawk HD now available on PlayStation Network

Tony Hawk HD now available on PlayStation Network photo

The Xbox 360 version of Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD released roughly two months ago as part of the Summer of Arcade promotion and everybody else who wanted a crack at it on another platform has been waiting since. Today, that wait ends for some, as the graphically overhauled skateboard game arrives on PlayStation Network today.

This would be my platform of choice to play Tony Hawk on. There are very few instances where I would select the Dual Shock controller over that of the Xbox 360, but between the more accurate directional-pad and the position of that d-pad, I much prefer it in this instance. Which, of course, means I'll likely be picking this up (again).

And don't lose heart, PC users. A PC version is expected to release next month. Spiffy!

PS All-Stars moves to Nov. 20: 'Will be worth the wait'

PS All-Stars moves to Nov. 20: 'Will be worth the wait' photo

Sony's arena brawler PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has been pushed back a month to November 20. This is fantastic news since it means that 34% more of us are now likely to survive Octobergeddon! It also means that developer SuperBot will be able to address complaints and bugs found in the ongoing beta, instead of saying, "If only we had more time!"

Here's what SuperBot president Park Chan had to say on the matter:

This will let us spend more time polishing and tuning the game, and it will give us a chance to incorporate some of the great feedback we’re receiving from the current limited beta to ensure we are creating the best possible fighting game experience. While it is our greatest desire to put this game into the hands of our fans as soon as possible, we do not want to do so at the sake of quality. The additional time will be well worth the wait, and are excited to know that our fans will have the ultimate brawler in time for the holiday.

This also means that SuperBot and Sony now have the time to get the rights to Crash Bandicoot, Cloud Strife, Michael Jackson, and Gumbi. No excuses. NO EXCUSES!!!

Rock Band Blitz releasing late August, new songs revealed

Rock Band Blitz releasing late August, new songs revealed photo

Harmonix has just revealed release date and pricing for Rock Band Blitz, their new downloadable title which offers a different way to play your Rock Band music library in an arcade-style, single-player game. Rock Band Blitz will arrive on PlayStation Network August 27 and be priced at $14.99, followed by Xbox Live Arcade the following day for 1200 MSP.

Additionally, four new songs were revealed for the game, bringing the total number of known tracks to 19. "So Far Away" from Avenged Sevenfold, Fun's "We Are Young" and My Chemical Romance's "Sing" will appear alongside the always funky, "Jungle Boogie" by Kool & The Gang. All tracks for Rock Band Blitz are cross-compatible with Rock Band 3, and vice versa.

I've played Rock Band Blitz a couple of times now and every time I walk away it's with a sense of longing. My Rock Band 3 play hasn't ever really slacked off and I still pop it in about once a week, so I'm eager both to get a whole mess of new songs while injecting new life into the already substantial library of songs I already have. At least now I know how much longer I'm going to have to wait. Six more weeks!

More Wii U details will come in the Fall, not before

More Wii U details will come in the Fall, not before photo

Ever since the Wii U was officially unveiled, fans have been clamoring for a price point and a release date above all other details. Well, it looks like you're going to have to wait a little bit longer, as all of that info is allegedly going to be released this Fall.

Gematsu is reporting that a reliable investor broke the ice, and stated that Nintendo will announce everything after a stockholder's meeting later this year -- game updates are also set to be included in this announcement.

I'm really hoping that Nintendo Land is bundled with the console, as I plan on getting at least four games at launch -- I don't hate my wallet that much.

Guild Wars 2 will officially launch on August 28th

Guild Wars 2 will officially launch on August 28th photo

It's official -- after hundreds of placeholders, rumored release dates, and leaked information, Guild Wars 2 finally has an official release date of August 28th, 2012 (pre-orders get early access on the 25th!). I had the opportunity to visit ArenaNet earlier this year, and as a result of my visit (and subsequent beta play), I saw some real promise in the game.

I have to admit, I came in pretty skeptical of all of the bold claims that the team was making, especially since I didn't really enjoy Guild Wars 1 -- I came out incredibly satisfied.

My favorite aspect of the game is the ability to do quests in the game's world without having to constantly group with people. There's no "quest object stealing" like in pretty much every other MMO out there, which makes general leveling a much more enjoyable experience.

If you haven't had the chance to try it yet and are part of the beta program, your last opportunity will be on July 20th-22nd.

Project X Zone gets a release date, in Japan

Project X Zone gets a release date, in Japan photo

"In Japan". Isn't that the worst phrase ever to see on a video game website? Not only is it an indicator that a possible western release is far away, but it doesn't even guarantee one in the first place.

Anyways, all of you lucky Japanese residents will be able to enjoy Project X Zone, the cross collaborative 3DS strategy RPG from Namco Bandai, SEGA, and Capcom, on October 11th.

This announcement comes compliments of Famitsu, who also reveals a hefty amount of never before seen characters, such as Imca (Valkyria Chronicles 3), Devilot (Cyberbots), Flynn Schifo (Tales of Vesperia), Rikiya Busujima (Zombie Revenge), Arthur (Ghosts N’ Goblins), Kogoro Tensai (Exclusive to the game), Mii Ouryuuji (Exclusive to the game).

The full roster will feature over two hundred characters (!), and that's not even including event cameos. Something tells me that this game is going to be a b*tch to localize.

Marvel Pinball 3D to hit 3DS eShop this week

Conrad Zimmerman, Managing Editor

If you have been anticipating the release of more pinball goodness for your Nintendo 3DS, you won't have to wait long at all. Announced less than a month ago in the run up to this year's E3, Zen Studios' Marvel Pinball 3D is slated to hit the Nintendo eShop this week, on June 28. Featuring four tables based on Marvel Comics properties (Blade, Iron Man, Captain America and The Fantastic Four), the pack will set you back $7.99 (€7.00).

These are all solid tables, particularly Captain America and Fantastic Four. I could take or leave the Iron Man one which, no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to hit my stride in. Still, great games and now portable with a 3D effect you can turn off after five minutes when you decide to get serious about playing some pinball. Hooray!

E3: New Super Mario Bros. 2 releasing August 19

E3: New Super Mario Bros. 2 releasing August 19 photo

Nintendo is all about Mario today. First, we had New Super Mario Bros. U announced for the Wii U. And now we're given a release date for a new 3DS entry into the NSMB series: August 19.

The main gimmick behind New Super Mario Bros. 2 is that Mario seems to be a greedy jerk, turning everything in sight into gold coins. Heck, the guy even turns INTO gold after picking up a Gold Flower. Freakin' Mario...

THQ fiscal 2013 lineup offers no surprises

THQ fiscal 2013 lineup offers no surprises photo

After the unveiling of a group of trailers over the last few weeks, THQ's investor call this morning offered up few surprises or announcements. The publisher has confirmed the 6 games for their 2013 fiscal lineup, but there were some few extra bits of info on each title:

  • Darksiders 2 - strong hype for the game, more than 5 times the pre-orders than the original Darksiders. Due to be released in August 2012.
  • Saints Row The Third: Enter The Dominatrix - full expansion, costing $29.99. Considered THQ's "flagship franchise" after they estimate between "5-6 million" units will be sold.
  • WWE 13 - aiming to emulate the "Attitude Era" from the late 90's, THQ aims to craft a superior single player campaign.
  • Company of Heroes 2 - Aiming for a "multi-year content plan" for the new RTS. No confirmed release date announced.
  • Metro: Last Light - original was popular with critics, sold poorly. THQ now heavily marketing Metro: Last Light, planning to make very strong single player campaign that will be very memorable.
  • South Park - the Stick of Truth - due for an early 2013 release, very excited with Matt and Trey's involvement.

So, no surprises but there's a nice mix of games on offer from THQ for the rest of this year and into 2013. Still, it would have been nice to hear the announcement of a new title but the THQ brass were reticent to announce any new IP.

A Sons of Anarchy console game is on the way...eventually

A Sons of Anarchy console game is on the way...eventually photo

Due to the enormous success of FX's hit show Sons of Anarchy, it seems as if series creator Kurt Sutter was pressured into creating a multiplayer browser based game to help monetize the IP. Well, some time has passed since that idea came to light, but as of this week, Sutter has called the idea of a browser based game "slapcrap", and now there are even bigger plans for a legit full console release. Right now there is no announced publisher or planned release date.

I initially dismissed the series as "some dumb testosterone-filled biker show", but was immediately swayed when one of my friends called it "Hamlet on wheels". One week later, I had already sucked up all four seasons, and now eagerly await Season 5. One of my biggest mantras is "I'll give anything a chance if someone recommends it". If you're one of those people, Season 1-3 are available on Netflix.

As for the game, even if it's bad, if it utilizes the show's cast it could be decent fan service at the very least. Let's just hope it doesn't turn out like the Prison Break game (which I somehow ended up beating through sheer force of will).

Hope still burns for a Fire Emblem: Awakening US release

Hope still burns for a Fire Emblem: Awakening US release photo

Although a PAL release was pretty much immediately procured, us American folk have been waiting, salivating, and begging for a State-side release of Fire Emblem Awakening. FE:A is the newest 3DS iteration of the Fire Emblem series, and the first ever Nintendo game that will be supporting paid DLC. Today, we yanks can sweat a little less, as Fireemblemawakening.com has evidently been registered by Nintendo of America.

When you think about it, it's entirely possible that they're saving the fanfare for E3 -- Fire Emblem has always had a large fanbase in America, so there's easily a market for it. The 3DS is making awesome strides in 2012, and I hope the Wii-U can follow suit. As for Fire Emblem, I bet you all can't wait to have a crack at the loli marriage simulator (spoiler alert in the link).

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 kicks into stores this September

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 kicks into stores this September photo

Continuing the flood of news coming from Namco Bandai today, in a press release, the publisher has narrowed down the North American console release date of the upcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2 to September 2012. Also teased is an "innovative" online functionality which the company promises more information on this June at E3. I am a bit curious to know what that could be.

I'm completely out of my element when it comes to Tekken, so I don't know what sounds good and what doesn't. Some of the features, like the customizable training character Combot, give the impression that they would be of value but I don't know my block from my... let's face it, I don't even know how to block.

What to expect from Mass Effect 3

What to expect from Mass Effect 3 photo

There are probably, like, six people on the planet that haven't heard about Mass Effect 3 and its release tomorrow -- thanks, in part, to EA's massive marketing blitz.

If you're a semi-obsessed fan like me, you're probably hyped up like an artist on halex and have a trailers playlist on YouTube set on repeat. After about 48 hours of incessant explosions, FemShep reinstatements, and watching that little girl run around with a toy ship, I got to thinking: "Can I over-analyze these trailers to pluck out a few random details and flesh that out into a feature?"

Yes. Yes I can.
