Praise The Sun! After the Internet’s impromptu petition to get Dark Souls released onto the PC, Namco Bandai and From Software have done right by the community, and even took things a few steps further. Now, PC gamers will prepare to die as From Software’s brutal action-RPG makes its debut on the new platform.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will attract new blood and players looking for punishing and challenging gameplay. Even more exciting is the fact that PC gamers will get a first shot at the brand new downloadable content, Artorias of the Abyss, which comes packed with the game.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)
Developer: From Software
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Release: August 24, 2012

MSRP: $39.99 (Steam, Games for Windows Live)

For the uninitiated, Dark Souls is an open-world action-RPG set in the world of Lordran, where death is only a mere obstacle on the path to victory. The reputation that From Software’s title has is well earned. The game revels in offering a harsh, but fair challenge to players. Death is literally used as a method to help players learn the ropes and overcome powerful foes and deadly dungeons. This quasi take on the classic trial-and-error gameplay has earned the Dark Souls a dedicated and hardcore following. And now, PC players will finally get a shot at the series.

Considering the anticipation for the PC version, it’s important to talk about the specifics of its release. It's a given that there are many PC players expecting a number of graphical options and tweaks to adjust and customize, which is fair. Unfortunately, the Prepare to Die edition keeps things pretty limited. As painful as this is for PC gamers to hear, this particular release will be a near direct port of the console version and will be capped at 30 frames-per-second. Moreover, the customization options for the game are limited to display resolution and frequency, anti-aliasing, and motion blur.

From Software’s reasoning behind this is because they wished to offer an equal experience to its console counterpart, in terms of visual fidelity and gameplay. Of course, this won’t do much to quell any disappointment with the lack of customizations. I know this is going to upset a number of players looking to get their hands on it, but take heart; the PC release still holds up remarkably well, despite not taking too much advantage of the new platform. The game’s performance is much better than the console releases, with little to no technical hiccups. Also, the Prepare to Die edition will support both gamepad and keyboard/mouse play styles, which can be customized to your liking.

Our preview began at a bonfire in the Sanctuary Garden, one of the new areas added to Dark Souls in the Artorias of the Abyss DLC. Players will travel back in time into Lordran’s past and uncover mysteries of the kingdom they inhabit. During this quest, players will encounter brand new enemies, collect new armor and weapons, and face off against some menacing new bosses. Towards the end of the Sanctuary Garden, we encountered one of the new stage bosses, the Sanctuary Guardian. A giant white chimera with a penchant for lighting attacks, the Sanctuary Guardian proved to a be tough adversary. After several deaths, and beating my head against the table in frustration, the chimera was eventually defeated -- and I got a hefty amount of souls, the game’s currency, for my efforts.

Pressing on to the next area, we encounter one of the new NPCs named Elizabeth, a sentient fungi who offers you to enter a covenant with her. Just as in the original game, players can choose to side with an NPC, ignore them, and even kill them out right to loot them. In any case, we venture forth towards the Royal Wood. This forest area is very reminiscent of the Darkroot Garden, expect for the fact that it’s much larger and far more dense. Not to mention, the area is littered with brand new enemies such as the wooden scarecrows and a new variant of the stone knights.

After avoiding much of the waves of enemies, and taking out monsters when necessary, we approach a seemingly abandoned ruins and we’re treated to a cutscene with a rather odd-looking monster. As it approaches in preparation for a fight, out of nowhere a large knight dispatches the monster in a single blow and readies for battle. After being referenced several times throughout the original game, fans will finally will be able to go toe-to-toe with the infamous knight Artorias -- and he definitely lives up to his legacy.

The fight with the dark knight was by far one of the most intimidating fights I’ve encountered in Dark Souls. Despite his large size and use of only one arm, he’s extremely quick and has an arsenal of vicious attacks that’ll take players out in 1-2 hits. As you can probably guess, I died and struggled against him numerous times. After several attempts, our time with Dark Souls came to an end.

While it wasn’t there being demonstrated, another new feature added was the inclusion of PvP matchmaking. Dubbed the Battle of Stoicism, players looking for a break from dungeon crawling will be able to enter a brand new dedicated battle arena and test themselves against other players online. Matche types range from one-on-one, two-against-two, and four-player deathmatchs. Upon entering the arena, players can activate a marker and set up the matchmaking process. The inclusion of a dedicated PvP matchmaking system should be a welcome relief for returning fans who had to perform rather unorthodox methods to have an organized PvP match.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is a well-intentioned release for the PC crowd. While the specifics of the customization options will now doubt deal a blow to PC gamers, the game itself is still very much deserving of a chance. Especially for new players looking to break themselves into the series. Now is a good time as any to jump in. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will be available for the PC on Steam and the Games for Windows Live Marketplace on August 24th. Console players anticipating the Artorias of the Abyss DLC should expect it sometime this winter.

Dark souls on pc, preorder your copy... Today!
Will not buy if GFWL in Steam version.

Double DRM is just silly, and GFWL is a pain
So it runs well? That's great, I was worried about that, the developers talked like they're having some problems with porting, but as long as it runs properly, whatever graphics are fine.
great, i was certainly concerned that From might bothc this release entirely (ie the game doesn't work!) but things seem to be back on track and i'm looking forward to giving this a try.
I was going to pick this one up a second time, for the better resolution and 60 fps, but this is just ridiculous.
Cant wait til this is released as DLC on XBL later this year. One of the greatest video games of all time.
will wait on Console DLC :D
Loved Dark Souls, just finished it on Xbox 360. Awesome game but what a let down of an ending, considering the great opening cutscene
@taer

It most certainly has gfwl attached to it unfortunately. But hey, its not like they improved the frame rate or put in standard PC options so yeah, what was the point in the first place?
Give it a month and there'll be mods that solve all your issue people.

When said mods exist, I'll be SLAYING THE B'JESUS OUT OF LITTLE TIMMY AND HIS ULTRA SUPER PIMP.
The PC port really sucks from what I've seen and heard... but we knew it was likely going to. I'm buying it just to support this game and so that they'll hopefully learn some PC stuff.
so the game plays better than it's console counterpart, and comes with additional content which console players will have to pay for, but it's still labelled a bad port? it could certainly be better, but i remember the days when "bad port" meant the game played worse than the original and was missing content. i guess the standard is higher than it was then, but From are still getting a bad rap.

GFWL is another matter, and yes it may well prove to be a mistake. funnily i had no issues with it till i got bulletstorm recently and had to crack the game to play.
No doubt people are going to mod the hell out of this one.
I can't wait for this. Hoping GFWL won't fuck me up too bad.
Do you have the ability to play with friends directly(I dont mean the PvP)? Thats one reason I would consider getting the PC version. As for the locked settings, it wont take too long for fans to change that. Mods are half the reason PC will always be superior :D, the other half the reason is that having a gaming PC makes your penis bigger.
The staggered release is only exciting depending on who you ask. And, in general being the graphics whores they are, even they don't seem particularly excited.
The PC port is only $40, which I think is fair. There's also some thing on GreenManGaming - get the free game of the day and get a 20% off voucher for another game. In other words, you could get it for $32 there today if you went to the trouble.

Think I'm going to wait on reviews, though, and see if some of the issues (framerate cap, resolution) get patched or hacked.
"Game will support both gamepad and keyboard/mouse play styles, which can be customized to your liking."

Tacking it on as if its a feature.
Its a Fucking given.
@Orcrist, its not though :/, none of the Mass Effect games have controller support and theyre also console ports. And I think some Ubisoft PC ports dont support keyboard/mouse LOL. I mean its still not a feature and it SHOULD be a given, but you cant just assume that stuff these days.
I just hope we can use our original characters in the DLC, without needing a new one.
I made 3 characters on the PS3 version (Dex/Faith, Strength and Magic) and loved every second of this game. Truly an all-time favorite this game has been. I cant fucking wait for the DLC.
I really wanted to get this on my pc. I never played any of the "Souls" games and I've been itching too. But I can't see myself going through the hassle of gfwl and what is essentially a console version of the game, instead, I'll probably get it for xbox. I really would have liked the game to be optimized for pc. Didn't Namco have a pretty good quarter? they certainly can afford to optimize it.
Wow, no graphical tweaking and capped at 30 fps? I'm sorry but that's pretty pathetic and there is no excuse, technical or otherwise, for this to be the case.

Gonna go ahead and take it off my steam wish list.

Expecting this game to be pirated and bad sales blamed on said piracy.
I don't have time to play games these days. But for this one i will make an exception ;)
I was all set to buy this. I don't really mind that the visuals aren't going to be much different, it looked pretty damn good anyway. But when I saw "capped at 30fps" Namco lost my sale. I want to play Dark Souls again, but not if I have to put up with the shitty frame rate.
Oh I'll probably buy this regardless, as it's one of my all-time favs.

But I really just want Poo to have a Mr Saturn to chill with!
Not giving a fuck that it comes with GFWL attached to it, and not giving a fuck that it has minimal graphic customization options... (though I will if it's not addressed later down the road)

This is the game I signed a petition for, it's being delivered, and I'm 100% ready to play the hell out of it on my laptop. The lack of support from the PC community for this has been beyond disappointing. Was hoping more people would be looking forward to seeing what they could potentially do with it after it got released, instead of just slamming it before it's even available.
I'll just leave this here

This preview does not highlight the greatest issue people have with this game's graphics, which is not the lack of options or the locked framerate, but the internal framebuffer of 1024x720. It's going to look like an absolute mess when set to higher resolutions, because this 1024x720 will be scaled and stretched to the higher one you select, instead of using your monitor's native res.
If you read the link I sent, it says "Well actually the 1024x768 render thingy might be true but i must say that the game looked awesome on the 23 Inch Monitor we had to play there. Yes it looks like the consoles but still great and in my opinion its about the gameplay and the hard but always fair difficulty in this series. Those screenshots flooding arround here showing some really bad looking screenshots are either rendered down or the sites are bull♥♥♥♥. It does not look like those screenshots. Not at ALL !"
can you tell us the specs of the rig you tested the game please?
@Revenile - But can you tell us what resolution of the monitor and what res they were scaling to for your demo? Could've been just 720p which will look much better than 1080p or higher.
I'll try this if I can transfer my 360 save to the PC version. I could do that with Mass Effect 2 and 3, so who knows.
WANNNNNNNNNNT
PC Gamer's: Complain and bitch about frame rates and how the game lacks customization. Also wanted a computer version for Dark Souls, gets it, still complains about it.

Console Gamer's: Take the game for what it is and accepts/enjoys it and doesn't complain nearly as much as PC Gamer's about petty things. Getting new content months later then PC.

Why can't we all just be happy that we're getting extra content for a game that was supposed to be stand-alone and getting another platform to boot? God, some people...
did you have any experience with the matchmaking for co-op play?
Can't wait for the console release. Hope there are some new halberds. Those are my shit.
"From Software’s reasoning behind this is because they wished to offer an equal experience to its console counterpart, in terms of visual fidelity and gameplay."

Translation: We're lazy.
August 24th it's gonna hit me. I'll suddenly realize there's more souls I need to have. Theres more deaths I have not experienced, and more equipment to get obsessed with.

I don't know if I can wait till DLC comes out on PS3.
