News ADV Secures Rights to Mag Garden's Anime
posted on 2004-02-23 03:01 EST
Starting with Erementar Gerad
Starting with the currently under production Erementar Gerad, ADV Films has secured the world-wide (exclusing Asia) rights to anime and merchandise based on titles from Mag Garden's manga line up.
In return, ADV Films will provide funding to produce new anime based on its titles. Titles in Mag Garden's catalog include such notable manga as Matantei Loki Ragnarok and Peacemaker Kurogane.
Erementar Gerad, which ADV announced as having pre-licensed at Otakon 2003, will cost aproximately 400 million yen to produce, a quarter of which will be provided by ADV Films. Erementar Gerad is to be released simultaneously in Japan and North America in April 2005. The Erementar Gerad manga, by Azuma Mayumi, was serialized in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Blade.

Dorohedoro GN 7
It's got fighting action, personal drama, quirky humor, and science crossed with sorcery, with no particular aspect overshadowing any of the others.

A Devil and Her Love Song GN 3 & 4
A Devil and Her Love Song manages to be set in school without being just another school story. While it has its flaws, like crowded pages and villains who reform too quickly, its heart is absolutely in the right place.

Ōoku: The Inner Chambers GN 7
Ooku is a story that is more interested in getting the facts straight than in telling a rip-roaring tale. It slowly meanders along, rich with details and delicately drawn, and while it may not be immediately apparent where Yoshinaga is going with it, it is an immersive and fascinating read.

Kaze Hikaru GN 20
Rich with detail but never overwhelming and full of likeable (and hateable) characters, this is shoujo that goes just a bit beyond the norm to bring us a story that we can really sink our teeth into.

House of Five Leaves GN 7
The flashback in the first half fills out a major character's past better than any conversation could, and a battle in the next-to-last chapter is the perfect payoff after such a long, dramatic buildup.

Detroit Metal City Sub.DVD
Vulgar and mean and misanthropic. Also inspired: a one-trick comedy that runs just long enough that it doesn't wear out its welcome and that contains just enough bitter truth that it cuts even as we laugh.

Achieving success in the manga business is like scaling a challenging mountain—and as Bakuman shows, staying atop that mountain becomes its own set of challenges.

Start with a Happy Ending GN 1
Start With a Happy Ending is a charmingly bittersweet collection that presents snippets of people's lives and tells a variety of complete stories. This book is not meant to be read in one sitting – but it is worth picking up again and again.

The Limit GN 1
Treating high school social issues with the harshness they merit, Keiko Suenobu fuses bullying with a survival story, and if the result isn't perfect, then it still manages to be an engrossing read.

Eden of the East: King of Eden DVD/Blu-Ray
Saki pursues an absent Takizawa in this direct sequel to the Eden of the East television series. Wicked smart as always, but with a more personal focus. Beware the abrupt ending.
